Brady Allen: Mr. Football case

Recommended Posts

JMO. Mr Football should be a player with multiple years of post season success. If it’s just senior season Allen has got to be 1 or 2.

Why does postseason success matter?  That is a team accomplishment.  Look at the LB for Bloomington South.  McCullough?  He's an incredible talent but will likely never have a successful postseason.

As it is a yearly award, the primary measurement should be the current season. Stats diminish with smaller schools -- just the way it is.

If I voted, I would just be trying to answer: "Who performed the best in Indiana this season?" Everything else is secondary: team success, career stats, school size, quality of collegiate offers -- even current year stats have to be weighted for SoS, position, type of offense/defense, participation (a player on a team that has put a running clock on, for example 10 teams, won't have the same opportunities to post stats as a four-quarter player). Are only seniors eligible, and if not, has a non-senior ever won the award?

I would also propose that a Mr. Football Offense and Mr. Football Defense be awarded, as it is too difficult to draw comparisons between both sides of the ball.

Brady Allen of Gibson Southern would have my vote — and I'm no Gibson Southern nor Purdue fan. We are splitting hairs, but put him on Mount Vernon, Cathedral, or Center Grove, and his numbers would be just as good if not better -- with more snaps, more media coverage, and (no offense to GS) but a better surrounding cast... although he might want to take one receiver with him, Heltsley.

I didn't see this list posted, and I think it should be helpful:

At a glance since 2000, the only "small school" winners have been:

- Wodicka, West Lafayette, 2009

- Smith, Luers, 2012

- Kiser, Pioneer, 2018

McIntosh, Reitz, 2007, has been the only winner truly from "southern Indiana." The others like Bloomington/Columbus, I'd say most southerners consider to be central Indiana as you aren't receiving news coverage from Evansville or Louisville.

Also, I'd argue that Cutler from HH in 2000 (or Schiff from Mater Dei) would've been a better choice than Shannon --Cutler ran, threw, caught, returned punts/kicks, I believe he holds the 3A State Finals tackle record. He had an injured ankle in semi-state and state and debatably lost a scholarship because of it; although, Vanderbilt turned out to be great.

I thought Schiff was a year or two younger than Shannon/Cutler? Guess I didn't realize Shannon and Cutler were same grade. Shannon did break the rushing record in his senior season but was also upset by Plainfield in the sectional.

Schiff was two years younger than Cutler. Cutler was 2000, Schiff was 2002.

Yes Shannon broke the record against Avon in Sectional Round 1. Shannon was not a 1 trick pony either he was a tremendous RB that could catch the ball out of the backfield. Also played defense as DB unless they didn't need him to. He also returned punts and kicks as well. I believe he was a QB in middle school, he definitely hit a big time pass play on a half back pass against Goshen in the 1999 State Championship game. Remember that play very well and was perfectly timed play call by then HC Streiff as everyone expected Shannon to be running the ball.

Well that didn’t take long 😂

I think both excel at their craft. Jackson was hardly needed to pass but he’s obviously very good. I think Allen has a better chance at making a splash at Purdue than Jackson does at Tennessee. Just my opinion. I’m guessing Tennessee recruited some other QB’s and there will be stiff competition. Don’t know who Purdue recruited but it looks like Allen could be a red-shirt freshman then a 4-year starter.

Rarely do QBs not redshirt at that level. Brady’s work ethic will have him in the hunt by year 2. Regardless of talent it’s a huge learning curve. Purdue is bringing in a really talented kid in the 22 class. Teams like Purdue will continue to recruit the best they can get at QB regardless of who’s in the QB room. I think Brady’s work ethic wins but there will be top notch comp every year.

I’m only poking at whiting for basing “who is the best” on what the rankings are.

idk TN situation much but the fact that they weren’t even a consideration really for Arch Manning was surprising to me.

as for Purdue….it depends on O’Connell.  If he declares for the draft…let’s just say Brady will have every chance and then some to be a day 1 starter.

From my point of view, it looks like the Red Sea is parting/all the stars are aligning…and with how college coaching is….that may be on purpose

I can’t envision a scenario where Allen starts as a true freshman even if O’Connell leaves unless it’s out of necessity due to injury. Plummer putting his name in the portal likely signals O’Connell is back, but Allen starting as a true freshman is more than likely an indictment on Brohm not being able to develop or groom a QB in his younger classes. Brady will get his shot and should have multiple years to prove himself, I just don’t see next year being it.

Spencer Rattler supposedly has Tennessee on his short list so that could be some intense competition for Tayven right out of the gate.  'Course that's assuming Heupel stays in Knoxville.  Some rumors have him sniffing around the Oklahoma job.

Nahh

Jackson a way better teammate than rattler already.

Rattler has had some unsavory videos come out from his time in High school.  One of them just belittling one of the other QBs on the team and nearly bringing the kid to tears.

just my opinion but I hope rattler doesn’t find a new school until he finds a way to fix his mindset.  He’s a me first player and while he has talent out of this world and that talent is worthy of being a top 5 NFL pick….he has abysmal leadership skills and to me only viewed college as something he HAS TO DO to play on Sundays…opposed to something that he GETS TO DO.

kid needs an entirely new mindset….a good example to the younger players of why it’s important to be a good leader and good teammate…talent isn’t everything

Interesting.

I've known Tayven since he played flags as a kindergartner I believe.  He's an incredibly nice kid who has more charisma in his pinky than I have in my whole body so I think he will relish the limelight.  His skills are off the chart.  It's going to be fun to watch him compete.

Brady Allen was named as a Semi-Finalist for the Maxwell award.  One of 16 in the nation.  Not sure he can win this award but he is in elite company as a semi finalist joining 6 other QBs including the QBs committed to Georgia/Clemson/TAMU/Penn State.

Pretty incredible that he has a chance to win this award.  The other players on this list are at the very top of the 2022 class.  Congrats to Brady on being nominated for this!
