The NCAA has banned the use of the "fake slide" by ball carriers less than a week after Pitt quarterback and Heisman finalist Kenny Pickett used the play to score a touchdown in last week's ACC championship game. The governing body has amended Rule 12-3-3, which deals with dead and loose balls.

"Remember, the rule was originally put in place to protect sliding ball carriers, and defenders have learned to hold up and back off. If we allow the fake slide, the defense may now not hold up, and we could see many unnecessary and dangerous hits," NCAA national coordinator of officials Steve Shaw told officials in a copy of the new rule interpretation, obtained by The Athletic.

The NCAA was concerned that quarterbacks were practicing their fake slides heading into postseason play, hence the swift reaction following Pickett's use of the tactic less than a week ago. These changes will be in effect for the upcoming FBS bowl season, as well as the playoffs at the FCS, Division II and Division III levels.

"Any time a ball carrier begins, simulates or fakes a feet-first slide, the ball should be declared dead by the on-field officials at that point," the interpretation read. "The intent of the rule is player safety, and the objective is to give a ball carrier an option to end the play by sliding feet first and to avoid contact. To allow the ball carrier to fake a slide would compromise the defense that is being instructed to let up when the ball carrier slides feet first."

The ruling, which cannot result in a penalty at this time, will be at the discretion of the on-field officials and is not reviewable under Rule 12-3-3, but that will be revisited in the offseason by the rules committee. "We can have that part of the debate in the offseason," Shaw said.

Well it was good while it lasted..........................

When I first saw it, it looked brilliant on the part of the quarterback..........and it actually kind of was. But also b---s--- at the same time. He was basically telling the defenders.............."hey guys, I'm about to slide, please don't hurt me." They defenders clearly let up in order to protect the guy.

Good rule change.

Congrats to Bryce Young for winning the Heisman.  Terrific year for the soph.

Take Bryce Young off that team, and Bama is still pretty darn good.  They would plug in another 4 or 5 star and keep going.  Take Kenny Pickett off Pitt and where would they be??? He has the moxie to be a be a good pro QB....I guess we shall see........
