My nephew goes to school there, but runs cross country with 3 other student athletes.  They might want to go 8 man football.

LOL

Who are they going to play?

Indiana has no interest in playing 8 man football.  Just give them flags and let them play flag football.

I'm pretty sure 8-man football is on it's way.

I'd be interested in seeing if the 13 mentioned here are new schools or just teams that are currently playing 11-man that are sliding to 8-man.  If it's the former, it would would mean an increase in kids playing.

Had a state champion recently that is doing great things at Purdue.

Indiana is a single class state in cross country by the way.  Wrap your mind around that.

I can speak with 100% confidence that the football program at OA is currently on pause, I was the head coach there this last year. We had 16 players, 8 were seniors that graduated and 6 freshman who never played a minute of football previous to this season. Next year the team has 8 returning players, if every single player from this past year comes back. There are a couple reasons why the team is on pause 1) lack of players: No enrolling freshman have shown interest in playing football next year 2) Decreasing enrollment: OA is having one of their smallest class sizes coming in to the school for next year. 3) Lack of practice space: The current space where we practiced belonged to the nuns who live at the local Sisters of St. Francis and sits next to a cemetery. Due to Covid, there has been an increase in needed space for burial and the nuns needed the ground to accommodate that.

It is an unfortunate situation for sure, the community is great and the kids are phenomenal, but with the circumstances listed above, its just not fair to the student-athletes to try to continue to throw something together and put them in situations where they could possibly get hurt (we finished our sectional game with 12 kids this year). They are going to hold on to the pads and such and the program is in the status of "on pause" with the hope that in the next couple years, number of enrollment will increase at OA and they can gather enough interest to reboot.

The pilot program for 8-man football in Indiana football begins in 2022. Plenty of schools interested. Only available to schools that do not currently have 11 man. It's coming my man.

Can schools contract this school  year and become eligible?

Aren't most of these schools concentrated in the far southern half of the state? I don't see some schools like Rossville (just east of Lafayette) relishing the thought of 2+ hour bus rides to find other 8-man opponents.

Kouts, westville, Morgan twp, washington twp, lacrosse, and Hebron closer but they play volleyball so not sue if the would switch to 8 man.

That's up to them. Just telling you what I know. I imagine they'll be trying to figure that stuff out during their pilot run. Games will more than likely be on Saturday's as to avoid overbooking officials.

JV games could conflict.

Some officials do college, though not a ton IMSC @Bobref???

Saturday evenings would be cool.  I would enjoy it, if games are near me in NWI.

Should have a whole new raft of officials, specialists in 8-man "football".

This is interesting. Maybe it could work.  Maybe not.  As discussed on here in great detail, officiating numbers are way down.

I wonder how much the rules vary.  Will have to look into that.

@JustRuleswould have a better handle on the number of our officials who also work college ball on the weekend. But my understanding is the same as yours - not a huge number.

The HCAC has 6 crews so 42 staff officials. I would estimate about half of them still work on a HS varsity crew and some of them are in Ohio. Some of the others keep their HS license but aren't likely to work HS sub-varsity any longer. There are also 20-25 D1/D2 officials and some of them still maintain a HS license to work an occasional HS varsity game. There are also 10-15 HCAC applicants who may keep their Saturdays open to tag along with a college crew or be available in case there are last minute needs for subs. With over 900 licensed HS officials the impact of the college officials is minimal.
