Top 25 MIC Recruits of the 247 Star Era

Recommended Posts

Was having a drunken New Year’s Eve debate with some folks regarding the history of football recruiting in Indiana and specifically, the MIC.

Spurred a quick project where I took a look at the best MIC recruits of the “star era” and this was the list (in order) of the top 25 recruits in the conference based on 247 sports.

Just thought it was interesting and would spur some discussion.

Apologize if I missed anyone.

  2. Jerimy Finch - WC (2007)

Nope.  He, along with Chris Evans, Desmond Tardy and Jovan Swann were among the most surprising omissions.

You’ve got Mr. Football winners that failed to make this list.

That was the first name I was looking through on that list for and was shocked to not see him in the Top 25. Obviously a lot of great athletes there, but that one got me the most.

Some pretty big busts on this list at the next level if you ask me. Just goes to show that recruiting rankings aren't everything.

Sheldon Day has had a nice NFL career. Bell had a fantastic college career and should be a decade long player in the NFL assuming he stays healthy.

No Russ Yeast from CG?  4 Star recruit.  Had a nice career at Louisville and now Kansas State.  (2nd team All Big 12 conference)

Yeast was also a 4 star but didn’t crack the top 25.

Lee was .9000.  Yeast was .8983.

Consider it done.  Gimme the years on McCutcheon and Jeff in the HCC please.

When did the "star era" begin?  I notice that James Banks is on there (02).

I am struggling to come up with 25 D1 football players since 2002, from the DAC.

Lake Central-Gelen Robinson-Purdue, Ike Spearman Ole Miss/Eastern Michigan

Crown Point-Matt Ernest-IU, Kurt Wermers-Michigan/Ball St. , Andrew Krumweid-Army

Merrillville-James Aldridge-ND, Dexter and Riley Larrimore-Ball St. and Ohio St., Kenneth Grant-Michigan, Eugene Wilson-Illinois, Dolopo McCarthy-Purdue

Portage-Albert Evans-Purdue, Antoine Brown-Kentucjy

Valparaiso-Jeff Smardzija-ND, Mike Dorulla-Ball St., John Hofer-Western Michigan

Chesterton-Cartwright brothers (1 went to Miami Ohio and the other Western Michigan-don't know if they fall into the time frame)

Michigan City-Brandon Fiske-Western Michigan

LaPorte-?

***Players from each school, off the top of my head.***

Sorry if I missed anyone.

Oh...so you are just going straight 247 numbers regardless of their actual on-field play and accolades?  Gotcha.....

I thought you might have included some subjective criteria to include their actual on field performance.

Not disagreeing..just better understanding the criteria you used.

Actually, McCutcheon, along with Harrison, were among the founding members of the HCC in 2000.  Jeff then joined in 2004.

Thanks.  Betting Dustin Keller would have been up there had the star era began in the 90s.

Kid was an absolute STUD in football AND track.

2002 was an interesting year for the Lafayette area as Keller climbed into Indiana's Top 10 receivers for a season with his teammate, Vlahogeorge, clocking in at the all-time season passing record at #2 ... which he still holds.  That same year, Clayton Richard, from McCutcheon, took the Mr. Football title and the following year finished his career as the #3 career passer although, since then, he has settled down around #6.

Ah, so I was wrong?  Keller was in the star era.  Thought he was earlier than that for some reason.
