2.0 Multiplier Required to Fix Lower Class Competitive Balance Inequities

Guest

Its an absolute travesty that the IHSAA is sitting by and doing nothing while Indianapolis private based institutions move to take over the lower class football post season tournaments.

Indy schools own Class 6A, with Ben Davis, Carmel, Center Grove and Warren Central capturing all 10 state titles since this class came into existence.

Cathedral, Zionsville and Decatur Central sit on top of 5A, with Roncalli likely soon to join.

Chatard, Brebeuf, Roncalli and Cathedral have dominated 4A for decades.

Chatard owns 12 3A state titles.

Now the IHSAA is clearing the path for Indy to take over the smallest classes as well.

Covenant Christian and Indianapolis Lutheran are hybrid football factories built to win state championships.

Neither , nor should any other private school,  be allowed to compete in Class 1A.

Private schools have emerged much stronger and much deeper in the post pandemic period.  The gap between private school football and public school football in Indiana, especially at the lower class levels, is wider now than it has ever been.

Class 1A football was designed for small rural communities that would do everything they could to scrape together 25 to 30 players to fill out a roster , and hopefully survive a full season plus a tournament.

We are now seeing a 1A classification with private school rosters of 50 to 60 players, many recruited locally and on scholarship, playing in multi million dollar facilities with huge coaching staffs, the best equipment money can buy, and massive levels of administrative and community support, levels that very few public schools can match.

Its flat out wrong, it goes against the good intentions of competitive balance initiatives, and it needs to be rectified.

A 2.0 enrollment multiplier will force all PPs up a class, address the competitive imbalance realities that currently exist, and restore Class 1A to its rightful place as the home of rural, outpost football in Indiana.

IHSAA , Commissioner Paul Neidig and Assistant Commissioner for Football Robert Faulkens, its time to act and protect small school football in Indiana.  Its not healthy for the sport to concentrate all the power and success into the Indy Metro Area.  This approach discourages participation in other areas of the state.  Do you really want that as part of your respective legacies?

GID readers, if you agree, email Neidig and Faulkens and let your thoughts on the subject be known.

I normally dont do this, but just wondering where your getting numbers of 1A schools with Multi-Million dollar facilities are?  I can tell you Lutheran doesn't. Until they scraped enough money together to turf their field, their facilities are nothing to really bat an eye at. They dont have visitor stands, they dont have an updated locker room. I haven't anything like million dollar stuff at Convenant either.  Are they good at football. NOW they are, its not like anyone in 1A  except for LCC has really DOMINATED 1A.

9 of last 13 1A state titles have gone to the Catholics. Catholics were runnerups in 2 of the 4 non PP title wins.

That is total and complete dominance, and most likely will continue given current trends.

There are no Catholic schools left in 1A.

Mission accomplished!

Like everything in life, it's cyclical and eventually will balance itself out. You had NE Indiana 3 peat in 2000, 2001,& 2002. Sheridan, LCC, & Pioneer have had their runs. Now it's beginning to be Indy parochials vs Adams County schools. It's been fun even if the results haven't went in our (Adams County) favor. Just going to enjoy 1A football while it's in Adams County. I'm sure AC will be 2A in the next cycle and with new programs South Adams could end up back in 2A at some point.

It's a traveling parochial school trophy. It just moves from fort Wayne to Lafayette to Indianapolis to Evansville and back around the circle.

Wait till he finds out that not every kid who attends private school has parents who drive a Bentley or own a Fortune 500 company.

None of that matters.

What does matter is that PPs have won 9 of the past 13 1A state titles, and the coaches are fed up with it.  Lutheran and Covenant will be pre season favorites to win it again.  Park Tudor also in the mix.

These are the facts that drive change.

Park Tudor?? The same Park Tudor team that has one winning season since 2005?

Lutheran and Covenant play in the same sectional so one of those teams will be eliminated in the first 3 weeks of the playoffs. Lutheran is deservedly one of the favorites to win 1A next year but Covenant isn’t.

Covenant will always be in the go forward conversation due to their ability to recruit and custom build a roster designed to win state championships.  Lutheran just happens to have more and better athletes today.  Both are 1A football magnets, built in the image and likeness of the LCC machine from 10 years ago.

Yes, Park Tudor is rising rapidly.

Park Tudor hasn’t won a sectional since 2005. They had a good year last year for program standards. Improving? Yes. Rising rapidly? Chill.

When Lutheran wins state they will move up to 2A and probably be stuck there. So you won't have to deal with them. So quit your bitching and make your team better.

You just severely offended hundreds of small school coaches around the state with those comments.  They reinforce the prevailing PP attitude on this subject and only serve to create a deeper level of animosity

Life is not fair,  Dwenger plays 5A because they had 3 great years. They are a 4A school for now. The student numbers will put them in 3A when they drop back down. 95% of the kids come from feeders schools. Fort Wayne has open inrollment so the "recruiting" myth doesn't work.

No one is equating Dwenger to Cathedral. We know that Dwenger is built from the ground up...........kudos to them.

I agree with DT that we need a multiplier for the private schools. Ninety percent of a private school's population is privy to the kind of training that only 50% of students at a public school can afford. It's easy to preach "stop whining and bitching" when your school is stockpiling trophies at the expense of underprivileged competition.

In all fairness, a public school that is rated highly in terms of socioeconomic status should also be given the multiplier treatment.

So the success is because of private training? Is that why New Pal had so much success a few years ago?

Give us evidence of "private training" being the secret sauce of P/P success. That is silly in the context of football. Tennis maybe. Coach Ralph is known for a tremendous S&C program. Are you saying all the kids do private training?

The "private training" comes in the form of CYO football.  Many public school kids are putting on pads and helmet for the first time in high school while their PP counterparts have been playing organized football with specialized coaching with a 5 to 7 year head start.  Even if public school kids play junior high football , they are coached by very young, inexperienced guys who are trying to work their way up to the varsity staff.

This is the "secret sauce" of PP football.  Young PP players are learning how to pull, pass protect and trap block while their public opponents are still playing video games at home after school.

There are many public schools who have tried to duplicate/replicate the CYO model in a public environment.

Some of the best are :

Center Grove

Eastbrook

FW Snider

Hobart

South Adams

Adams Central

Michigan City

New Prairie

Brownstown Central

Heritage Hills
