20 straight?  Damn.  Didn’t realize they were that dominant.

Tier 4:  Avon, Noblesville

Projected Order of Finish:

1.  Westfield - Rocks tired of finishing 2nd.  Coach Jake Gilbert is "Empire Building" at Westfield and aims to have the most consistent and dominate 6A football program in the state.  WF has a stranglehold on the rugged HCC, with 20 straight conference wins.  This program reloads and takes on all comers.

2.  Brownsburg - the clock is ticking on John harts career and the Hall of Fame Coach would like to add another state title to his mantle to complement those won at Evansville Reitz and Warren Central.  Since Hart and his staff arrived at BHS 7 years ago, the program has been a big winner in then regular season and a bust in the post season.  The 2022 Bulldogs are deep, talented, big and fast, and have a top end QB returning to take the team on a playoff run.

3.  Hamilton Southeastern - The Royals separated themselves somewhat from rival Fishers last year, but are still looking up at two big roadblocks ahead in BB and WF.  HSE has depth, talent and power, but light when it comes to big time playmakers.  Can they overcome and play perfect error free disciplined football, which is what it will take to move into the top tier of the conference.

4.  Fishers - The Tigers had a very respectable season last year but are basically treading water in a very deep and talented football conference.  Curt Funk is looking for some people to step into key roles and give this program a spark.  FHS is on the precipice.  They can rise and be a top half of the conference competitor, or they could just as easily fall behind and have some difficulty catching up.

5.  Franklin Central - the Flashes surprised a lot of people last year with 3 conference wins, and Jayson West, who won titles at Lawrence Central and Warren Central, will not be satisfied until his team wins the HCC and makes a deep run at the 6A state title .  West and his staff are the most accomplished in the conference, looking at their backgrounds and prior results.  Huge year for FC to see if they can sustain and build on last years success.

6.  Zionsville - Pound for Pound, is there a tougher football program in the HCC than Zionsville? This program, now in 6A, plays with an enrollment of 2000 in a conference where the average enrollment is close to 3500.  Young Scott Turnquist is a heck of a coach and has a great staff around him.  The Eagles with two straight 5A runner-up finishes to Cathedral are not ready to back away from the big stage. Question is, can they keep pace in this league of mega schools on a consistent basis?

7.  Noblesville - 2022 could be a make or break year for NHS HC Dave Sharpe and his staff.  The Millers are all in on Sharpe's power running game, which produced zero conference wins the past two seasons and an overall 4-16 record with no post season wins in Sharpe's two years at the helm.  The Millers are huge and play a fun style of smashmouth football, but the wins need to start coming, and soon.

8.  Avon - Avon fell off the map last year, dropping to 1-9 and giving up a ton of points in the process.  Over the past 10 years, Avon has produced more D1 talent than any other school in the conference.  Suddenly, the well has run dry.  The entire Avon Athletic Department is in a funk.  Enrollment demographics are changing.  Student growth is slowing.  Kids are transferring to other schools.  Avon may have bigger issues to deal with than HCC wins, and Mark Bless, heading into his 13th year at the school, appears to have a major program rebuild on his hands.

I honestly think you can make a case that every single team in this conference has reason for optimism and could play the “stock up” card.

Of course the problem with that is that someone has to lose and finish in the bottom half of the conference…

I see two potential hot seats in this conference.  One in Millerville and the other in Cosmetic City.
