Has anyone ever had to coach against their former teams?

Recommended Posts

Yes Coach Gilbert did for several years when he took over at Tri-Central. Tri-Central is in the same conference and was in the same sectional for years.

I assume you are talking about head coaches but it happens all the time for assistant coaches who do not move out of the area and want to coach.

I have no idea. He is listed as Dean of Students in the Noblesville High School faculty directory.

It has happened several times for Reitz. Both Bob Gaddis (now at Columbus East) and Tony Lewis (then at Henderson County in Kentucky) coached against their former team.

Way too common in the region, prime example of the coaching carousal moves from point A to point B we have had throughout the years:

Some right off the top of my head:

Chesterton's Mark Peterson VS. Portage

Former Hammond Morton coach Roy Richards VS. East Chicago

Former Michigan City coach Craig Buzea VS. Portage

Homewood-Flossmoor (IL) Craig Buzea VS. Michigan City

New Prairie's Russ Radtke VS. Griffith

North Newton's Jeff Bean VS. River Forest

Former Hammond High coach Eric Schrieber VS. Hammond Noll

Former Hammond Clark coach Eric Schrieber VS. Hammond High and Hammond Noll

Former Hobart coach Wally McCormack VS. Andrean

Former Andrean coach Phil Mason VS. Wheeler

Former Crown Point Coach Dave Egofske VS. East Chicago

Former South Central coach Dan Klimczak VS. Wheeler

Former Crown Point coach Brad Smith VS. Highland

Former Calumet coach Ivan Zimmer VS. Andrean

I played at Warren Central. While coaching as an assistant at Cathedral, I was a JV coach for a couple of match ups, and we played them once on a Friday night. I started coaching at Chatard, and years later, again while at Cathedral, coached against Chatard.

Former Whiting and now Woodlan head coach, Sherwood Haydock, came back to Whiting in 2015 for the semi state game.  He did it several years back when he was at River Forest as well. Many of us Whiting coaches were former players and/or assistants under Haydock, pretty neat experience for all of us.

Brian Moore was on Fountain Central’s 83 state champs. Coached at Seeger at least 15 years, came to FC for 5 years the last 3 as head coach. Next year he’ll coach against both former schools as head coach at Parke Heritage.

What were your emotions in those situations?

It was weird when we got off the bus, but during pre game, being able to chat with former teammates and other friends of mine was cool. Ultimately though, it boils down to coaching the kids you have to compete. You forgot the other stuff pretty quickly.
