Sheridan goes for win #700 Friday night at Clinton Prairie.  I have a book of Sheridan football history and I'll share some historical info with you.  I believe they used to play Wabash College back at the turn of the 20th Century.

Thank you!

Indeed.  Shows that poor sportsmanship and the desire to "grind your opponent into extinction" existed even almost 100 years ago.

Maybe, but in a lot of cases it was just the ineptitude of the opposition.  Linton was a state power in 1924 and Midland was a small school 6 miles up the road from Linton.  That had to be a terrible mismatch.  156 - 0.  In fact, Midland has never played football in my lifetime and that goes pretty far back.  But not quite to 1924.  Although my sister was born in '25.  She'll be 97 this month.

What do you mean by this? The Clinton referred to in the post is Clinton, Indiana NOT Clinton County.

Some sports haven't learned their lessons yet.  Maybe deja vu would have been a better response.  Just trying to lighten the subject.  (foxbat liked it)

1981 Lafayette Jefferson Football

The regional playoff game was at Jeff with 5200 fans on hand. This crowd was the largest to witness a football game in Tippecanoe County since Jeff met West Lafayette in Ross-Ade stadium in the early 1950's.  Jeff was playing 11-0 FW Snider.  Jeff had a 10-0 halftime lead after Tony Albrecht kicked at 32 yard field goal.  Jeff's Joe Downing  returned the 2nd half kick off 90 yards for a td and Jeff was up 17-0.  Snider then shut Jeff down.  Jeff gained only 16 yards rushing and 22 yards passing in the 2nd half.  Snider's 2nd string QB, Archie Lunsey, threw a 34 yard td pass to Geoff Williams with 1:26 to go in the game and Snider was up 18-17.  Doug Downing threw a pass intended for brother Joe, but the pass was intercepted and the game ended.  1981 was probably Jeff's best chance to make it to state.

Tippy - here are some stats on Sheridan football.  The Hawks won their 700th game last Friday and Coach Wright won his 440th.

1st game - 1899 vs. Boxley.  The team was 2-0 that year with both wins over Boxley, which is now part of Sheridan.

1900 - team was 1-0 with win over Lapel.

1901 - 1st games with Noblesville and Westfield.  Sheridan defeated both of them.

They are 0-1 vs. Franklin College, 0-1 vs. IU Freshmen team, 0-2 vs. Wabash and 1-0 vs. Wabash B team.

The Hawks were 13-11-1 vs. Carmel, 62-25-3 vs. Westfield (most wins vs. any other school), 16-15 vs. Hamilton SE, 25-15 vs. Hamilton Heights and 23-25-2 vs. Noblesville.

Their longest rivalry has been Kirklin/Clinton Central.  The Hawks were 28-21-3 vs. Kirklin with the first game being played in 1907.  They are 48-12-1 vs. Clinton Central.

I have more but that gets you started.

Thank you Ballhawk!  This is awesome info!  I didn't know they played the IU Freshmen team, and they beat the Wabash B team.  Its funny that they have a winning record against Carmel and not against Noblesville.

It might have been because Lafayette Jeff fired coach and teacher, Fritz Grosshans in 1925.  Jeff students went on strike in February 1925, and for several days the students skipped school.  The students had signs that said "We want a New school Board"

You have to consider that long ago the two largest towns in Hamilton County were Noblesville and Sheridan.  Noblesville was larger and the county seat.  Fishers, Westfield and Carmel were pretty small.  Sheridan would have been a 4A school in basketball in the 1950s.

I also learned that the Blackhawks won some mythical state titles in the 1910s and 1920s.

Snider had some very good defenders such as Rod Woodson, Dieter Heren.

I created a feature on the website that lets me have box scores and stats and even links to game recaps (see games from 2009 and 2010 seasons) but scouring all the news sites, finding these and inputting proved to be too time consuming and I stopped.

My goal is to have every score in state history on the site. For the older years, I’m doing one season at a time. I’m currently working on 1946 but I’ll definitely get these added to the site eventually!

Thanks again for sharing!

Fact. This archive has to be one of the most, if not THE most, comprehensive collection of state HS football data in 'murica. Admittedly, I've not dug into any of the other 49 states... but I will just go ahead and stick with my initial assumption and never look back.

Great work @Rudy!!

I appreciate that. Not sure if that’s true but appreciated nonetheless. It’s just something I enjoy doing 😊

Alabama has a really good one. Michigan and Tennessee do, as well. Few more too but I’m partial to this one 😊
