David Crosby has died. As a founding member of The Byrds, and then later Crosby, Stills & Nash (and the subsequent Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young), Crosby was one of the most influential figures in 20th century music, helping to bridge the gaps between folk and rock, and co-crafting the image of the politically conscious music superstar. Per Variety, Crosby died this week after a long illness. He was 81.

Burt Bacharach, the singularly gifted and popular composer who delighted millions with the quirky arrangements and unforgettable melodies of “Walk on By,” “Do You Know the Way to San Jose” and dozens of other hits, has died at 94.

The Grammy, Oscar and Tony-winning Bacharach died Wednesday at home in Los Angeles of natural causes, publicist Tina Brausam said Thursday.

Over the past 70 years, only Lennon-McCartney, Carole King and a handful of others rivaled his genius for instantly catchy songs that remained performed, played and hummed long after they were written. He had a run of top 10 hits from the 1950s into the 21st century, and his music was heard everywhere from movie soundtracks and radios to home stereo systems and iPods, whether “Alfie” and “I Say a Little Prayer” or “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again” and “This Guy’s in Love with You.”

R.I.P. Raquel Welch, model and One Million Years B.C. actor: https://www.avclub.com/rip-raquel-welch-model-and-one-million-years-bc-actor-1850119309

Quote

Actor and ‘60s sex icon Raquel Welch has died at the age of 82 after a brief illness, according to BBC.

Welch was born Jo Raquel Tejada on September 5, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois. Her acting career started on the theater stage, and her first on-screen job was as a weather broadcaster. She married her high school sweetheart, James Welch, and they remained married for five years until 1964.

When she returned to Los Angeles in 1963, she began auditioning for Hollywood studio roles. Her big breakthrough came in 1966 when she starred in the sci-fi flick Fantastic Voyage, a blockbuster hit. In the same year, she snagged a role in One Million Years B.C. as Loana, where she dawned an iconic piece of prehistoric garb.

Despite only having three lines in the film, the iconic images of her in a doe-skin bikini certified her international sex symbol status. Stills from the film were printed onto posters, which became global best-sellers. In The New York Times’ review of One Million Years B.C., Welch was described as a “marvelous breathing monument to womankind.”

In addition to her subsequent film roles, Welch carved out a healthy career as a pin-up model. She went on to model for Playboy, but never succumbed to pressure to pose or appear in scenes fully nude.

Following One Million Years B.C., she became a Hollywood mainstay, leading films such as Fathom, Bedazzled, 100 Rifles, Myra Breckinridge, Fuzz, and more. Throughout her career, she worked alongside the likes of Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Stewart, Dean Martin, Burt Reynolds, Richard Burton, Jimmy Coco, and Faye Dunaway. In 1973, she earned a Golden Globe for her performance in The Three Musketeers and was nominated for one for the TV drama Right To Die.

In her later career, she made memorable appearances on shows like Seinfeld and films such as Legally Blonde and How To Be A Latin Lover.

Wow.  Truly an American Icon.  She will be missed.

I know, he isn't in the dead pool yet, but he is getting things ready to jump in soon.

Jimmy Carter, 98 years old - He certainly wasn't a good POTUS, (IMHO - kind of a toss-up between he and our current POTUS as to who was/is worse) but his life before and afterwards has certainly been incredible.  A former military man, returned home to run the family business.  A staunch, humble humanitarian person who gave so much of his time and efforts to so many, especially his work with Habitat for Humanity even up to a few years ago.  I will give credit where credit is due.

A man who has earned my deep respect - may he pass peacefully and rest in peace.

David Benner, Indiana Pacers' longtime PR director, dies: https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nba/2023/03/01/david-benner-indiana-pacers-longtime-pr-director-dies/69959800007/

Quote

David Benner, who spent nearly 30 years as the director of media relations for the Indiana Pacers, died Wednesday after a long illness.

Benner’s death was announced by the team, which learned of it from his family. He was 67.

The Indiana native was prominent in the chronicling of sports in his home state for nearly a half-century, first as a sports writer covering the Pacers, Notre Dame football and Indiana University basketball for The Indianapolis Star before joining the Pacers’ staff in 1994.

He was with the Pacers for 28 years, retiring last season. Benner made a point to visit every road city in his final season with the team. He was given countless gifts and tributes along the way, a sign of the enormous respect that other public relations professionals, reporters, executives and players had for Benner and the way that he did his job.

...

While I really didn't follow Mr. Benner's career with the Pacers I remember growing up reading his work in The Indianapolis Star.   Truly a Hoosier Icon.  He will be missed.

Robert Blake, prominent actor later acquitted of murder, dies at age 89: https://www.avclub.com/robert-blake-prominent-actor-later-acquitted-for-murde-1850210717

Quote

Robert Blake has died. Once a beloved child actor, and celebrated for roles in his adult career that ranged from 1967’s In Cold Blood through 1997’s Lost Highway, Blake’s reputation and career both functionally ended in the 2000s, when he was tried in court for the murder of his wife, Bonnie Lee Bakley. Although Blake was eventually acquitted for the crime, he fared less well in civil court, where he was found liable in a wrongful death suit and ordered to pay a $30 million fine. Blake spent the rest of his life in relative seclusion—give or take the occasional foray into social media—and died on March 9, 2023, of what’s being reported as heart disease. Blake was 89.

Belafonte died Tuesday of congestive heart failure at his New York home, his wife Pamela by his side, said publicist Ken Sunshine.

With his glowing, handsome face and silky-husky voice, Belafonte was one of the first Black performers to gain a wide following on film and to sell a million records as a singer; many still know him for his signature hit “Banana Boat Song (Day-O),” and its call of “Day-O! Daaaaay-O.” But he forged a greater legacy once he scaled back his performing career in the 1960s and lived out his hero Paul Robeson’s decree that artists are “gatekeepers of truth.”

'Unabomber’ Ted Kaczynski died by suicide in prison medical center, AP sources say: https://apnews.com/article/ted-kaczynski-unabomber-1197f597364b36e56bdbcaca9837bdc4?utm_source=ForYou&utm_medium=HomePage&utm_id=Taboola

Quote

Ted Kaczynski, known as the “Unabomber,” who carried out a 17-year bombing campaign that killed three people and injured 23 others, died by suicide, four people familiar with the matter told The Associated Press.

Kaczynski, who was 81 and suffering from late-stage cancer, was found unresponsive in his cell at the Federal Medical Center in Butner, North Carolina, around 12:30 a.m. on Saturday. Emergency responders performed CPR and revived him before he was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead later Saturday morning, the people told the AP. They were not authorized to publicly discuss Kaczynski’s death and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

....

Kaczynski had been held in the federal Supermax prison in Florence, Colorado, since May 1998, when he was sentenced to four life sentences plus 30 years for a campaign of terror that set universities nationwide on edge. He admitted committing 16 bombings from 1978 and 1995, permanently maiming several of his victims.

In 2021, he was transferred to the federal medical center in North Carolina, a facility that treats prisoners suffering from serious health problems. Bernie Madoff, the infamous mastermind of the largest-ever Ponzi scheme, died at the facility of natural causes the same year.

One of America's most infamous criminals.  He will not be missed, although I think everybody should at least read his manifesto.

Daniel Ellsberg, the history-making whistleblower who by leaking the Pentagon Papers revealed longtime government doubts and deceit about the Vietnam War and inspired acts of retaliation by President Richard Nixon that helped lead to his resignation, has died. He was 92.

Ellsberg, whose actions led to a landmark First Amendment ruling by the Supreme Court, had disclosed in February that he was terminally ill with pancreatic cancer. His family announced his death Friday morning in a letter released by a spokeswoman, Julia Pacetti.

“He was not in pain, and was surrounded by loving family,” the letter reads in part. “Thank you, everyone, for your outpouring of love, appreciation and well-wishes to Dan in the previous months. It all warmed his heart at the end of his life.”

Until the early 1970s, when he disclosed that he was the source for the stunning media reports on the 47-volume, 7,000-page Defense Department study of the U.S. role in Indochina, Ellsberg was a well-placed member of the government-military elite. He was a Harvard graduate and self-defined “cold warrior” who served as a private and government consultant on Vietnam throughout the 1960s, risked his life on the battlefield, received the highest security clearances and came to be trusted by officials in Democratic and Republican administrations.

Sinéad O’Connor, the Irish singer known for breaking out in the ’90s with the Prince-penned “Nothing Compares 2 U,” has died, according to The Irish Times. She was 56 years old.

O’Connor rose to acclaim in the late 1980s with her album The Lion And The Cobra, which earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Female Rock Vocal performance. Her profile rose ever higher with her second album I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got, which featured the single “Nothing Compares 2 U.” Her striking look in the video—the signature shaved head, the single tear rolling down her cheek—made a huge cultural impact.

In her later years, O’Connor was beset by mental health issues that impacted her career. In 2022, she was hospitalized after posting suicidal messages on social media in the wake of the death of her teenage son, Shane.

Per The Irish Times, she is survived by her three remaining children.

How tragic. Much too young.  Truly a 1980's Musical Icon, she will be missed.
