A few thoughts for the league...

-Wagner gets my vote for POY. Simply put, he did more with less. I know Bosse only finished 3-6, but QB #1 for Lincoln got the nod in 2022 on a squad that was only 4-5...(and I believe that young man is about to prove his worth all over again as we move through the sectional). 

-No nonsense this time around for Reitz/Boonville Part 2.  Panthers will boat race the Pioneers on Friday. Past that...BNL/Jasper/Memorial will certainly have something to say, but ultimately it seems Reitz v EC is inevitable. 

-MD will still find their way out of Sectional 40. I saw the better version of this group back in Week 3 (hard to believe that was 6 weeks ago), and they made another statement on Friday. NP will be a tough challenge, but I like the Wildcats at The Bowl.

-I really want to pick North to come out of 16 despite a tough road match-up at Floyd..because they can be that good. But I trust Castle more, and the Knights got the favorable draw with the championship game in Paradise. 

-VL knows their path..and it starts with a revenge tour at Owen Valley (who defeated VL and GS a year ago)

EDIT: OV defeated Lincoln in 2021,  VL lost to GS 2022....

The pressure will definitely be on NP at the Bowl in R2. I suspect if you switch the schedules they both are about at the same place as the other. MD faced much tougher opponents week to week and was very competitive with Reitz, who is far better than anybody NP has played. MD should be licking their chops to finally play some 2A schools.

I personally have no problem with the all-in format vs qualifier. Seeding vs blind draw? Well that is another question. 

 

PS - If you haven't read the article in the C&P by @kylesokeland regarding the closed nature of SIAC football scheduling, I highly recommend it. 

I think you seed it and let everyone in. I know there are challenges but I think all in all it is better than a blind draw. We’d do it in wrestling with every weight class. No reason you can’t do it in football.

The conference Sagarin ratings are particularly odd this year.  Typically the conference is drastically overvalued or undervalued before being connected during round one.  This year the conference is overvalued.  Currently the conference has 8 of the top 10 ranked teams in the state on predictor with only the SIAC wanna-be's Brownsburg and Center Grove rounding out the top 10.

Typically the in conference Sagarin rankings match closely the actual standings.  This year that did not happen at the top.  I don't understand this at all but I suspect Sagarin might have wrong game results for North or Reitz to account for them being switched in the rankings.

I included the final 2022 standings after state.  I expect the final ratings after state to place Reitz in the 20's and the 6-3 second place teams to be in the 30-60 range.

...additionally, the improvement of VL and Bosse make this the deepest the conference has been since expansion.

We heard this same song and dance during our years in 2A vs. MD. 

I'm just telling you - this years NP team is different.

What an ignorant comment. Running clock doesn't start until the 2H  and North had their backups and JV by the end of the 1Q. They didn't even play a few of their best players. Central is THAT bad look what we did to them with our backups. Multiple INTS and special teams miscues let these games get that out of hand.

I prefer competitive scheduling and conference alignments should always be reevaluated to encourage it.  The article touches on aspect of that. 

The article suggests big match-ups between SIAC, PAC, and Indy schools could happen if the conference wasn't closed.  I agree, that could happen.  But considering it basically rarely or never happened prior to a closed conference, I'm not sure why it would happen if the conference opened up.

Oddly enough, Jasper and Memorial were really the only two who consistently played a non-conf game against each other from SIAC and Big8. The PAC schedule never really aligned with the SiAC schedule (Wks 1 & 2 for non-conf) and I don't know how much interest there was in playing anyway.

Lots of things "could happen" if the SIAC was not closed but, as mentioned, these games were not a priority before and are unlikely to be a priority in the future.  Travel time, travel cost, student safety, etc are greater priorities for high school ADs than these "ideal match ups" with more distant teams. The playoffs often provide these kinds of match-ups.

Jasper and VL are the only two teams with any driving distance btwn them and the rest of the SIAC and residents from both of those communities seem to routinely visit E'ville area for various activities; dining, shopping, medical so their fans don't think the drive is that big of deal.

That was the issue for sure.  But now we have some non-conference slots up front.

Had some conversations over the weekend with some buddie and one of them said he left your game against Boonville.

I told them it was probably because you guys were up so much on them early, but then I was told you weren't when he went out.

Had a head whip with the ground.  

Taking him out was precautionary as the game was never in doubt.  He is 100% fine.

I agree with this. We are only talking about 4 games if you really think about it.  Jasper vs. HH and Southridge.  And GS vs 2 SIAC schools.  No other "Big" PAC schools have shown a willingness to schedule a SIAC team.

I think it’s easier for the bottom half of SIAC to find games. Memorial played Mater Dei twice non-conference because nobody wanted to schedule either team. I don’t see many schools in either PAC division outside of HH, GS, and maybe SR that would look for games vs the top half.

We did play Central I believe for 2 years(?) in what turned out to be 2 of their strongest teams in school history. Go figure lol

The recent history for those schools is SR beats Linton four years in a row, loses year five, then has them replaced with Washington.

HH replaces VL with MD (a big upgrade at the time), loses two years in a row, then replaces them with Mt. Vernon.

I've never gotten an answer as to why either series ended.  (SR v Linton, HH v MD)  Both seamed to make sense from a schedule and competitive standpoint. 

In the new PAC most non-conference games are cross division.  The only non-PAC games with 3a or larger schools are Washington vs Edgewood (4a) and Tell City vs Hancock County (3a if they were Indiana), and GS vs IMG acadamy.
