I’m not sure that my son is going to have a league to play in this year. I know it’s short notice, but are there any dads annd kids out there that would like to stand up a Yahoo! League with me? It will be totally vanilla. My son is currently in 5th grade. 

Neophytes like yourself have no idea how hard it is to break into the college coaching profession if you miss your window as a graduate assistant. High school coaches approaching 50 years of age are not routinely offered the opportunity to make the jump at mid-major, D1 level. 
 

And no, Ben Davis does not compare. 

How myopic would you have to be to think that an Indians HS job is preferable to a D-1 assistant position?

I’m not even sure of a good answer to the problem.  Coaches (and players, for that matter) in a conference are in a very good position to determine the best players in that conference.  They’ve seen all of them play at least one full game.

The press couldn’t do worse than the good ole boys in the IFCA. 

Few coaches have been more influential in Indiana High School football than Bob Ashworth. His coaching tree includes Bob Clayton and Bruce Scifres. His youngest son is the head basketball coach at Hamilton Southeastern. Ashworth played for Northwestern and the Redskins (was once traded for Howard Mudd). He served as the head coach at Lawrence Central, Vincennes Lincoln, Heritage Hills, Broad Ripple, and Crispus Attucks, among others. He moved around the state as his then wife took new assignments, taking over programs largely in disrepair and building them back to respectability. He was a coach’s coach, but more than anything, he cared about developing the young men under his charge. He dedicated the last years of his career serving those with the greatest need and making significant impacts on many, many lives.

I’m a big fan of RebelDad and his sons (whole family for that matter!). I actually returned to Roncalli as the offensive line coach in 2020. However, after meeting with Sam Otley for about twenty minutes, it became very apparent that he should be the guy and I should serve as his assistant. It’s hard to argue with the results. 

I can’t see him ever leaving Roncalli, but Sam is one of the sharpest football minds I have been around. He will make a great head coach when given the opportunity.

Yes. I was asked not to say who it was. I would encourage you to find a similar source that will then tell you the exact same thing. The person in question did not vote for Hansen, so they hardly have any reason to lie about it.

Same player was a draft pick his junior year in college. Bye bye went the offensive line and so did any interest from the NFL his senior season. 

Let's not pretend that the offensive line isn't, by far, the most valuable asset to any offense. But a kid at that position has no chance at Mr. Football and no chance at the Heisman. Those awards are given to the best football player. Apparently offensive linemen aren't considered football players. And that's a "travesty."

The decision actually did come down to factors beyond their ability at running back. Coyle’s prowess as a three-sport athlete was taken into consideration. The outcomes of the teams factored into play, as well. 
 

Once that bridge has been crossed, you have to count the fact that even though Hansen only played defense against their top tier opponents (and then only part time), he still led the team in sacks and TFL. You also have to give him credit for being on the podium at the state wrestling finals, a sport where you are completely reliant on yourself and only yourself for success. 
 

But Roncalli had no representation in the room or anyone that truly cared to advocate for Luke. Coyle had the head coach of the best team in the state to carry his mail. The system is ridiculous. 
 

To be clear, I have nothing against Coyle. He had a great year, and I hope he goes on to do amazing things in college. 

This discussion breaks down into two groups:

1. Center Grove fans and the handful of coaches that made the decision

2. Everyone else in the state

That is based on TGD profiles and Twitter. It’s a travesty, but it’s over. Maybe this will lead to something new being created. 

Even I would have voted for Bocephus over Bohn. He was born to boogie. 

Bohn also broke the state season rushing record, and the team went undefeated while besting 7 previously undefeated teams.

He literally ran for 250% more yards and scored 400% more touchdowns against their two common opponents. 

Roncalli limited Luke to 23 total carries against the IPS teams. I believe he had his lowest rushing total against Shortridge.

He was literally better against the same talent. Roncalli’s schedule was also actually harder than CG’s when Trinity, Male, and Elder are added in. Just saying. 

Luke Hansen objectively had the better season. 
 

CG and Roncalli had two common opponents, Columbus North and Franklin Central. Coyle had 52 carries for 193 yards and 2 TD. Hansen had 61 carries for 489 yards and 6 TDs (plus 2 receptions for 66 yards and another score). 
 

The comparison gets uglier when you start looking at Coyle’s numbers against Trinity and Hansen’s numbers against Elder and Male (Male beat Trinity and Elder beat St X that also beat Trinity). 
 

In the end, Coach Moore carries the day. It is what it is. Luke is already on to wrestling.

You would have loved the late 90s on here. 

To me, a kid that carried the ball an average of 34 times a game (excluding the two IPS games where he had a total of 23 carries), lead the state in rushing and his team in TFL and sacks (while only playing 20% of the defensive snaps on the season) was more valuable to his team. The strength of schedule further solidifies that claim. 
 

I have nothing bad to say about Bowen, just making my case for my guy. 

Luke Hansen’s case for Mr. Football

Luke Hansen Highlights

The totals tell part of the story:

3,080 yards rushing (state leader)
3,191 yards total offense
37 touchdowns, 35 rushing
4th in state in touchdowns and points scored
6 sacks and 15 tackles for loss (led team in both)

But the details are the game changers

Playoff Championship Games

Despite only playing roughly 30 defensive snaps per game, Luke managed 3.5 sacks, 8.5 tackles for loss, 9 solo tackles, and 12 assists against Brebeuf, New Pal, and East Central. He had a solo TFL on 4th and short and a sack/forced fumble to give Roncalli the ball late in the fourth against EC.

He also had big games against the toughest opponents in the regular season.

Chatard (3A champs) - 233 yds, 2 TD
Brebeuf - 261 yds, 4 TD
Male (playing for KY 6A title) - 324 yds, 4 TD
Elder (OH Div 1 Sweet 16) - 231 yds, 2 TD

He was a workhorse, carrying the ball 30+ times in 7 games, including 3 games with 40+ carries. He went over 100 yds 14 times, 200 yds 8 times, and 300 yds 3 times. 

He averaged over 5 yards per carry 11 times and over 10 ypc 5 times. He had 10 multi-touchdown games, including 7 3+ TD games and 4 4+ TD games.

Roncalli’s schedule was ranked as the 18th most difficult without taking Elder and Male into consideration. 

He was not interested in setting records, just winning football games with his best friends.

It’s ridiculous to call New Pal a paper tiger. There’s no way you’ve seen them play if you think that. They are monstrous. Literally. They were the most physical team I’ve seen in a long time - like old school GCL mean. There are only a handful of teams in the state that could compete with them and none for which a victory could be assured ahead of kickoff. 

What about when the referee mishandled the ball at half tIme and cost Roncalli the opportunity for a field goal (literally dropped it off his foot). Or the numerous holding calls on the edge of the pocket on key third downs that were missed? Or the no call on the pass interference on Roncalli’s drive immediately following their second score? Or the numerous spots NP benefited from both with and without the ball on key third downs?

I’m sure New Pal fans can come up with a similar litany of times they were hosed. Both teams played their hearts out. The officials were balanced at worst. 

Roncalli’s schedule this year has arguably been its toughest ever. I’ve seen evey game this year, and East Central is the best team Roncalli has played, including Elder and Male. They are big, nasty, and do everything well.
