The more I look at their roster and who will be returning - along with a definite QB1 under center - I think Castle will be extremely tough next year.

Returning talent has rarely been an adequate barometer for the good folks in Paradise and how they will finish in the  SIAC IMHO.

Harrison and Bosse, possibly, they and North are due for new turf. Castle, probably not because Boonville and Tecumseh would also have to get turf too (that’s what I have been told over years)

Not necessarily true with the the new Superintendent, assuming he stays expect to see changes for Lidy in a few areas.

  3. If the policy at LOS for this weekend is the same as the large band competitions walk up sales still had to submit the Ticketmaster fees!  Heck of a deal, show up in person and still get charged.  I had to rethink the process this year and makes me wonder how much the rebate is that Ticketmaster gives back to the venue.  And the best part was only the North gates were used for some of the events meaning a nice stroll past Payton after you had your e ticket.

    Be safe traveling to all.

Castle was a fine tuned machine for 48 minutes tonight…Lincoln not so much. Both teams traded punches in the first half as they combined for 5 consecutive TD drives. VL looked to make it a 6th consecutive at the end of the half, but fumbled into Castle’s end zone from the 2 on what would have likely been a score for a 21-21 game at intermission. Instead the Knights led 21-14. Big big moment in the game.

Both defenses tightened some in the 2nd half. But Lincoln simply couldn’t get Castle off the field on 3rd down...leaving Hunt and company on the sideline…Easily the most frustrating game this season for the Lincoln defense. 85 Aignor torched the Alices early and 33 McCool was really elusive in the backfield down the stretch.

And when VL had drives going in the 2nd half they ended with a couple big drops and a real questionable spot on a 4th down in Castle territory where forward progress was not recognized.

Xander Hunt was still incredible in this one despite the offense being held in check overall. This was his best passing performance that I’ve seen in terms of his accuracy. It’s so fun to watch him improve each and every week.

Kudos to the Knights though. They simply were the better team tonight. They’re playing excellent football right now. Nothing to hang your head about if you’re VL. I sure hope that Castle/Reitz is streamed next week cause it’s gonna be a war. Must see TV.

The Alices have to regroup and get ready for homecoming week against an upset minded Harrison squad who embarrassed them a year ago. I think Big Green will respond as they did against MD.

Well written Seal, I was at Lidy for some of the action and you described what I observed better than the press.  Xander is legit as is the offense  scheme.  The Alices ran the option as it is designed and had success in doing so.  The Vincennes bleachers were well represented with a nice student section.  Well played.

    @ShakeDowntheThunder..

I agree 100% D1 is a tough, tough level to reach and so much goes into it beyond the playing field.

Look at it this way.. In recent years, the winningest programs in SW Indiana have been Memorial and Gibson Southern. Memorial is 69-14 and GS 58-13 over the last 6 seasons. I believe the two schools have combined to produce 5 D1 athletes - Drew Hart (EKU), Mike Lindauer (UC/SIU), Branson Combs (SIU)and Ray Brodie III (IU track) from Memorial and Brady Allen (PU) from GS. I believe Sloan Cox from GS may have signed D1 for shot, but I'm not positive, so maybe it is 6. If you look at each of those kids, they had something that absolutely set them apart from everyone else on the field in pretty much every HS football game they played.

Castle has 5 D1 athletes from the 2022 class who were on the Knights FB roster at one time, 6 if you include Sloan.

  6. Castle vs Center Grove in Lacrosse, maybe Band.  Football would just be ridiculous although now that I69 is open I could get a pie from Mother Bear’s a bit quicker for the ride back after the first half running clock.

i do agree with the concept you propose if not the selection.

Along with Fisher, other current freshmen I’d expect to see playing a lot as sophs are Horning and Broshears.

I understand that Tilly will not be playing next year?

Well, it's not like this is college or pros.  He's still just a high schooler, albeit one that's more prominent than most with his baseball potential.  So it would seem to me that he could just decline to play without needing any sort of official press release.

The reason I posted this is because the source (albeit secondhand) is Tilly himself.  So if he's openly telling people he isn't going to play, I'd say it's a legit topic of conversation in an SIAC football thread.

Is it maybe a situation where he's leaning this way, but Coach Hurt thinks he can talk him into sticking around?

I'm sure there are fans of a number of SIAC schools who would question this.  That's not to say that no other schools have good feeder programs.  But "the rest" of the conference?

Well, they've won 5 Sectionals in the past 10 years, including '15, '16, '18, and '20.  And they went on to win regionals in '15 and '20.  That's not exactly slumming it.  As for the conference, it's just been a dogfight for a long time...with several teams enjoying periods of success.  And now that perennial contender Jasper's in the mix...

same young man told people he wasn’t going to play this season  acct transfers off the O line.  You heard that as well, no?

sectional in 18 and MVP that year quits the next year as the polos couldn’t, or wouldn’t keep two RBs on the field.  Meanwhile Central had three who saw the field that year, two going both ways.   Check the Middle School and Freshmen records the past two years and get back to me if you wish.

Well, I'm certainly in no position to confirm it.  But I've heard it twice:  once from a player from another school who knows Tilly and claims to have heard this from the horse's mouth...and a separate time from one of Tilly's Castle teammates.

But, when it comes to HS football, I always take things with a grain of salt.  There are always a bunch of rumors, and a whole lot of them amount to nothing.

Could make sense with Baseball for his senior year, that’s the only connection I see if he doesn’t play

Certainly not public and while has been mentioned for a good while, still didn’t seem appropriate for posting IMHO.  That being said, if true would not have as much of an impact as might be suggested.  Stay and play or take the year off the same polos and khakis with headsets are still on the field and in the box.  The two transfers to GS would have never seen the D side of the line as “that’s not what big programs do”. Sloan’s spin move at  a critical moment at LOS would never occurred In the SIAC.  The outgoing class of 2022 at Castle was dominate up until a few years ago.  You have to go back to around 7th grade to find losses by the two feeder schools, undefeated and rarely scored on past that.

Tilly wasn’t used to match his skill set, as was the kid before him.  The rest of the SIAC has more than caught up with their respective feeder programs, Castle is not going to ascend without a massive pivot.  While the rest the conference as figured out how to keep their 11 best in the field and how to put them in a position to be successful the school in Paradise continues to languish.

Cheers to Bosse and Harrison for a hard fought season and to all the other schools.  Best of luck next season.

What about skill position players? I thought they started a few sophomores last year but my memory isn't the best.

Castle does return a good number offensively but lost significant talent on the defensive side.  It also returns the juggernaut offensive schemes that produced 7 points against North, two FGs against Meter Dei, up 7-0 against Harrison in the 3Q and 7-7 tie against Vincennes at halftime.

  12. While it’s admittedly the goal of every coach to have their 11 best on the field at any one time and to put them in a position to be successful it seems to me that a few programs consistently do this better than others.

Memorial is a great example to hold up as a model i.e. certain players playing both ways and  taking advantage of the unique skill sets of an individual when placing into a position group..Central certainly uses a similar model understanding that 75% of a player that brings 110% having to play both ways is better than some efforts at 100% playing one side only.  Add creative play calling and a firm understanding of player development to the mix and I see why certain programs remain at the top year after year.

Mater Dei remains a tough out on anyone’s schedule, North is willing to do whatever it takes from a play call sheet.  Reitz will be fun to watch, Jasper should always be consistent.

    Scoreboard!😜

I’ll be the first to acquiesce this outcome of the game was over before the bagpiper hit the field, which was a nice touch.  But the fact remains with a choice to play the 1s on offense the entire game there was no running clock and failed to beat the Knights on the scoreboard the second half although surely the should have.  Perhaps if you recount the outcome it will turn out different?

  14. The fact that there are discussions about a Friday night football game in November for any Indiana High School remains (obviously) the biggest win far and away.  Most, if not all on this board surely agree on that ranking.  That being said Castle does have some weapons that could help them contend i.e. WR and TE that are underused by the OC along with a running back who has great hands but rarely gets that opportunity - and Cathedral’s defense would have their hands full for a bit with those three additions.  Sadly that will not occur as Castle’s offense remains highly predictable and I fully expect the staff at Cathedral to attack the exposed weaknesses.  56 zip?  Don’t think so.  Running clock?  Maybe.

  15. Word on the street there was much more to than golf.  But I will concede that was the version released and in an effort to be fact based will agree to one player.  Current class of 21s lost one game prior to varsity their JV season, undefeated  I believe Freshmen and at Castle North.  Current 22s undefeated both Freshmen and JV.  Similar tune for several years leading up to the Varsity records.  The FB program(s) don’t underperform until a certain arena.

Castle has lost football players to those specializing in other sports. You also have to factor in kids that have moved too.

Name one in the last four years who relocated or dedicated to another sport?  Of the 21s and 22s that I know of that have moved it was  to play in another program.  Currently there are future/committed D1 baseball, football, soccer and lacrosse players all on the roster.

That is not really what happens to Castle. Over the last 26 years they have had 15 seasons with at least 8 wins. 20 winning records, one season of a .500 record and 5 less that .500

This is exactly what happens.  Last year, year before with a forfeit that went under the books and soon to be this year.  Over the last four years the facts are what they are.  The same talent that dominates for the seasons mentioned suddenly fails to do so at the varsity level.  This year’s group of Seniors and Juniors lost maybe two games combined Freshman and JV years.  Two games.    Last Friday that same group was found themselves  up 7-0 at Harrison in the 3Q.

Since then, Castle won the title in 2011 and 2012. Since 1973 Lidy's first year as HC and until now through 2 more HCs, it's been the ebbs and flows of high school football. Every program goes through them.

What  schools other than Castle  routinely have Middle School, Freshmen and JV programs go at or near undefeated, then go .500 as a varsity program?  All the other schools must really hit on all cylinders their varsity years . . . Might suggest it’s a bit deeper than be and flow.
