Need to be clear before moving forward, was this a PAT or a FG attempt?

Field Goal Attempt.  Whistle blown immediately when ball was blocked.  Ball still on ground behind line of scrimmage.  Ov picks up and returns but GS players had stopped and were walking off field.  Whistle was clear And loud. Possibly sounded like more than one whistle. Should have been GS ball, replay down.

I almost feel like calls definitely switched to being mostly against GS after that. Alot of makeup calls

So, it sounds like a blocked field goal recovered by the defense behind the neutral zone and advanced. The ball remains alive. When the whistle was blown is really important. If it was blown after the kick was recovered, it belongs to the team in possession at the spot where the ball was when the whistle sounded. If it was blown while the ball was still loose following the blocked kick, it belongs to the kicking team at the previous spot and the down is replayed.

Unfortunately, an inadvertent whistle following a blocked field goal is an all too familia scenario in high school. That’s because on a kick try — which is much more common than a field goal attempt — the ball is dead if the kick is blocked. The field goal mechanics call for communication between all crew members prior to the snap to acknowledge that “the ball remains alive.”

It was blown before recovered.  I was thinking an inadvertent whistle you had to replay the down. OV had some penalties go against them but not as many as GS. I think most were self inflicted for both teams. A few were questionable.

    Well..it’s Thursday…

I wasn’t going to resort to this but the lack of insults being thrown to this point has left me no choice!

Maybe I’m looking into it too much….

but could a coach asking for an early running clock just be to get the 7th grade game done and move onto the 8th grade game?

as far as I can remember they are played on the same day on the same field…so if a 7th grade team is losing handily there is no need to drag it out.  Get the 8th graders out there and get the show on the road.

idk…that’s just my perspective and what I remember of going to watch 7th/8th grade games

Possibly, but the games are only 7 qtrs to begin with. The Coach has done it both home and away and has done at  both 7th and 8th grade levels in the past.

Maybe he thinks someone will run up 90+points on him like HH did to pile central.

But in all seriousness, i dont know why he has over the years. At the lower levels I enjoy watching kids get as many reps as possible

I believe we also swept Southridge 7th, 8th, Fresh, JV, Varsity.

Correct. With a back up QB on varsity and a kid who had never played QB at JV. Was great that we didn't cancel anything that week with injuries and kids playing up. Those games are so important for development.  Also respect for Southridge for never have asked for an early running clock.

I believe freshman are still looking for a game Thursday

Great for your middle school teams! No salt in these wounds!

What’s that got to do with our JV team?

frosh are playing JV due to injuries at at all three levels of HS football…therefore they are playing up and had to cancel remainder of season

HH shutout GS 10-0 as well but nevertheless I will stick to the topic of discussing the HS JV team doing well amidst tough times this season to date.

Just adding to the conversation on a discussion board.  Glad HH JV is a bright spot. Should be some exciting games between HH and GS in the future.

I am curious as to why your middle school coach often ask for a running clock earlier than the 35 point spread as stated in the rules. He has done this multiple times over the past several years.

    PAC JV Large School

HH has had quite a few hiccups and couple butt whoopins at the Varsity level

however… a bright note is the JV team is still undefeated and should win against Princeton this coming Monday barring something freakishly happening or a cancel.

several Frosh and sophs are playing varsity and not JV

makes next season hopes of doing better than what has been accomplished so far this year going into week 9.

GS swept your 7th and 8th grade tonight. HH canceled freshman game against GS undefeated freshman.

GS 7th won 38 to 8 with an early running clock wich was requested by HH coach...

    GS 8th grade won 16 to 8.

  8. Using Bobref's post on good mechanics....tonights crew didnt score well.

particular order of priority or frequency:

    1. Do the wing officials “square off” their forward progress spots? Proper technique, other than in goal line situations, is to trail the play up the sideline to the forward progress spot, and then move in perpendicular to the sideline. If that wing official’s route to the spot looks like a banana, that’s a sign of lack of attention to detail that doesn’t bode well for other calls.

    2. Does the crew make timeouts look like a local officials’ association meeting? Everyone on the crew has a specific job to do during a dead ball interval. That is not the right time for the crew to all get together and chew the fat.

    3. Is the sideline clean? IHSAA officials are under a very clear mandate to properly manage the sidelines. This means no coaches on the field itself at any time, except during charged or injury timeouts, and no one in the 6 ft. “restricted area” when the ball is alive. All coaches are fully aware of this. If the crew is lax in its enforcement of this directive, it’ll likely be lax in other areas as well.

    4. Is the goal line covered? Goal line officiating is probably the greatest challenge for a 5-person crew. There is a complex set of mechanics associated with goal line officiating, but they all boil down to one thing: having someone on the goal line in a position to rule on a TD. It’s not easy, and it’s not always possible. But if a kid scores on an off tackle run from the 4 yd. line, and the wing official signaling the TD is at the 2, that’s a real problem.

    5. Watch the two officials under the crossbar on a scoring kick (try or field goal). Are they talking to one another before the snap (they are supposed to be identifying eligible receivers and communicating that to one another)? Do they have to look at one another before signaling the kick? They shouldn’t. If the kick threatens an upright, and is above the top of the goalposts, does only the official on that side signal the kick? When both officials signal, do they do it in unison? Attention to details like these spills over into other areas of officiating.

    6. Proper use of the beanbag is another such detail. Does the back judge use a beanbag to mark the spot where every punt ends, even if there’s a fair catch, or the ball is downed by the kickers? When the ball is fumbled, do the officials mark the spot of the fumble with a beanbag? Do they refrain from using the bag for marking the spot of a fumble behind the LOS? If a kick was “first touched,” did they mark that spot?

    7. What happens during penalty enforcements? All 5 crew members have specific duties during the administration of penalties. Are all the officials moving with purpose? Or is administration left to the Referee and Umpire, while the other 3 crew members just sort of wander around?

    8. Does the crew hustle? I see a lot of walking around some Friday nights. That sort of body language can be interpreted as lack of engagement, which can be fatal to your credibility. Good officials avoid it like the plague.

    9. How many whistles blow at the end of the play? On most plays, two are plenty. One is better. Too many whistles means too many officials watching the ball … and not paying attention to other responsibilities.

    10. How does the crew handle the ball? Proficient crews use well-established ball handling procedures designed to get the ball back in play as efficiently as possible. It’s done with a minimum of delay, and the ball doesn’t spend any time on the ground.

Realistically, you cannot evaluate the crew’s performance in many areas without formal training and a better vantage point. But these 10 things to watch for will give you a pretty good idea of what you’re dealing with as a crew.

LOL....Memorial folks themselves said here back in '19 that they were glad they were in 4A or they wouldn't have been celebrating if they were in 3A.  That didn't originate with me, but with Memorial folks.  As for Chatard, some of those folks stated that the '19 team was the best they had had in a decade...again, their words, not mine.  As for me, am I glad that a stellar Memorial team was not in 32 for us to have to get through in addition to a tough GS team?  Like you said, it is what it is.  I believe that P/P should have to play up anyway, but the rules in Indiana are what they are and until they are changed we just have to get bigger, stronger, faster.   Take it from one who is 1 - 6 against Chatard....we don't make excuses when we lose to them (well some 'round here do), we instead have to get back to work and improve until the rules change, which they won't.  I would have rather had this years Chatard team to play than the '19 team, but that is the way it goes.

The unfortunate fact for those of us in public po dunk is that to win state we need guys named Jay and Brady (with a solid crew around them)--once in a generation for our schools.  We don't get those guys every year, but every now and then,  in a good program you can take a group of skinny, nasty, country boys (and a few big hungry ones) and make a solid run and have your opportunity to play for it all.

To be honest, in 3 years, I hope our path goes through Memorial and Chatard....I think we may be able to give them both a solid game.

In three years, Hopefully GS is standing in that path....sectional 32 will be exciting.

Gibson Southern played Henderson County (Ky) at LOS a few years back I believe…but I don’t think anyone on the team was in HS when it happened….maybe Brady and a few of the others were there because their older brothers were playing.

I would bet more than a few were there . The administration honored our youth league, TYFL,  at halftime.  I bet 55 or more players listed on the current roster walked the sideline at halftime that day as youngsters.
