  1. With the new enforcement rules of spot of foul vs LOS, is it still possible to have a safety occur when a holding penalty on the offense occurs in the endzone?

Example: Team A has the ball on their own 2 yard line. As they drop back to pass, the left tackle ends up in the endzone and holds team B. Because this foul would be enforced from the line of scrimmage and not spot of foul now, would it still result in a safety or would it be half the distance and replay the down?

Got brought in another thread earlier today. Triton vs LaVille, :06 seconds left of the first half, LaVille fair catches at the -48 and initiates the free kick rule inside 10 seconds. A really great teaching moment for all the refs, the coaches, and the players.

This rule blows our players minds every year when I explain it to them! Not had a chance to use it yet, but would be a fun situation!

Not for high school.  Bet all you want on college and the NFL.  Keep the high school kids away from that crap.  They read this forum.

Do we want Center Grove kids walking the halls telling their friends and teachers that they are 14.5 pt favorites over Warren Central?

    I hope not.

There is not money involved so this is no different than pulling up the JH site and seeing what the prediction is on there.

    5. Football and Track

Center Grove is the model for the 21st Century High School Football Program in Indiana, and for the country as well.  The connection between the football and track programs is huge.  Northern staffs should look for ways to strengthen their relationship with their respective track programs.  Having one HC run both programs is a clear winning formula at CG.

As a coach who is an assistant for football and HC for track, this is a very underrated advantage for a program. M'ville is a northern school that I know has a strong connection with their two programs and that is beginning to show on the field.

Yorktown (782 students) is very similar to Delta (806 students).  Those two schools are rivals and probably prefer to stay together.  Yorktown also has one of the best volleyball programs in the state along with New Castle.  All hypothetical of course, just wondered if there was a reason Yorktown was left out or if they were simply overlooked.

I believe that Yorktown will actually pass up Delta in this next class alignment making Delta the smallest in the HHC currently.

    Even better than Lafayette Jefferson?

I believe so... If, IF they can recruit the middle schools and their own building. On a smaller scale that is what happened at Marion. Basketball guys out playing football, for example, was almost unheard of at Marion for a while. That changed when Coach Chambers was there. By no means is it a guarantee, but there is a heck of a lot of potential to create something successful at Tech I believe.

Delta and Wayne have bad blood from a few years back.... Delta by 10

That game was 10 years ago... Not sure many playing even have any idea of it. That and it was more Wayne vs the officials that evening more that Wayne vs Delta as far as bad blood. I was actually playing in that game and it was a surreal experience seeing a ball moved 50+ yards just on penalties from one play/reaction.

Jett is a good player. He was at Tipton in MS and then transferred to Western who is in our conference so our team knows him well. Not sure he’s the runner Bragg was but he’s a better passer for sure.

Preparing for/coaching against both of them, Engle is definitely the better player. Bragg may have had a slightly better command of the O being in the system longer, but even for it only being week 2 (our week 1 due to COVID) Engle marched them down the field a few times and made plays with his arm and legs. They'll be a tough out as always with a touch more speed and throwing ability at QB to contend with.

Best collection of high school talent you will see on one football field in a very long time

Tune in to Center Grove Football network for the live stream.

LNs high powered offense led by  IU bound Donaven McCulley against CGs impenetrable defense anchored by D1 recruits Austin Booker and Caden Curry.

I would add the qualifiers of best game so far, and best game on paper. I would think that next week CG vs Cathedral will be an awesome game with an even larger assortment of talent than this one. No doubt LN is good and has some dudes, especially on offense, but that CG defense is an absolute monster to deal with. I would doubt this game is very close.

  10. Another problem with the seeding/qualification rabbit hole is that it will force teams to change their regular season schedules to ensure they can get a higher seed or qualify. I think of some of the Luers teams or even some of the MIC/HCC/Hoosier Conference schools who had so-so regular season records because of playing bigger and better competition but then go on to have deep tournament runs or even win a state title.

Dont despair Coach Harvey.  Its a good argument.  Like many we have had on this site before.  New Pal is the new Roncalli, defending their success from outsiders who challenge their methods and processes.  The SF mitigated Roncalli's hegemony.  Perhaps the IHSAA will learn something from the CS situation and step in next time its sees the potential for similar circumstances to develop

Once again though, there is nothing to "step in" on. 1. There was a move 2. The IHSAA isn't in charge of competitive balance, if they were we would seed and limit who got into the playoffs and 3. Who is to say a team like New Pal in a growing area wouldn't want to switch to a more metro conference anyways therefore taking away the whole "they blew up the HHC" argument.

Trust me, I wasn't thrilled to see him leave, he made us better and is a great kid off the field as well. All this other nonsense is just how the chips fell in this situation.

Spegals transfer to NP was widely reported in the media and reported on extensively in the buildup to the 2018 and 2019 seasons.

I recall clearly at the time having many of the same observations I have now.  Something about this move just didnt seem right.  What if this particular student athlete sets a precedent where all the top level athletes begin congregating at a small select number of schools.  KInd of like in the NBA where players collude in free agency and select destinations where they can collectively go and achieve their goals.

Im seeing many high level college recruits using social media to do this very thing.  a 4 or 5 star player signs with Mega State University, and he starts texting and tweeting all the other high level kids he met at camps along the way.  The strong get stronger, the weak get weaker.  This cant be allowed if the IHSAA expects to stand by its creed to support the concept of competitive balance.

When an athlete and their family buy a house in a new district, there is nothing that the IHSAA can do to block a transfer in that case. Whether or not that is the only home they own or whether or not they choose to stay in the area post high school is irrelevant. The fact of the matter is that Charlie was a great player at Delta and a great player at New Pal. Couple that with the fact that New Pal had already built something special with the other players they had on the roster and it made for an incredible two year run. Whatever the motivation for the move (family in Hancock county, closer/more business opportunities, etc..) is a non-factor in a transfer.

We've talked a lot about it within our staff. There is no teeth to anything the health departments say.  We should just ignore it.

Health dept is a government entity as is a public school. (Private schools are out of my realm of knowledge) Ignoring a rule, mandate, order from your local government is a good way to get the whole school in trouble as well as lose a coaching staff immediately. Not saying I agree with everything that our local health dept did/does, but unfortunately the ball is in their hands for the time being.

I will be the first to admit that I was wrong about this football season and thinking it wouldnt happen.  Things seem to be going better than expected with minimal teams having to shut down a couple weeks.

My question is this,  assuming we make it to week 10 (which I now am confident we will), and Team A beats Team B in first round of Sectional.  On the following Monday, Team B has a significant player test positive for COVID.  Is Team As season over just like that?

Contact tracing is king. It all depends on your county health dept and what they deem necessary for a quarantine. Their may be some additional IHSAA guidance come tournament time, but their hands are tied by local health depts. just as much as schools are.

Your honest opinion...can it change and if so how long does it take a program to change it?  Elwood/Alex/Oak Hill have all had success within last 10 years.  Frankton had been a been a football school for a number of years until recently.  Blackford looked like it had a turn in direction a few years ago.  MG has had more negative than positive I think...do any of those have a shot to turn it around?  Or is current CIC simply destined to be a weak conference or are they waiting for a change up and I'm defining that as Eastbrook/Mississinewa leaving.

I think that another thing that has to be focused on is a football coach's relationship with the other varsity coach's in the building. There are plenty of basketball, baseball, wrestling, etc. kids in the CIC that are not multi-sport athletes and would contribute greatly to CIC football teams. At schools that size it is essential to try to get kids out for multiple sports and find a way to share the athletes in the summer/off-season.

Do some of the better track programs in the state participate in any out of state or in state indoors competitions? Where are there indoor tracks besides IU, Purdue, and Notre Dame? ISU?

Anderson U, Wabash, Ball St, Depauw, and I'm sure more have indoor track facilities.

There's an indoor track season in Indiana? We participated as our first event in the meet at IU, but I believe that was Heritage Hills' only indoor meet.

"season" It is run by the coaches association so its not an official IHSAA season. All of the meets are qualifiers for the "state meet" at IU. Typically its the first three weeks of March and then done. I equate it to the scrimmaging we are allowed to do in the summer now for football (non-covid years).

There have been years the best 3A team would've given the best currently 6A teams a challenge. 1999 Roncalli and 2003 Chatard come to mind. If not, they didn't need much more to be as good...certainly not the rosters of all 1-3A teams.

It will probably never happen but change the all-star game to 1-4A vs 5-6A.

For our indoor track season they split the schools 1-3a and 4-6a for the state finals. I wouldn't hate to see two all-star games set up like that with the current North vs South set-up.
