I know that this question is going to sound a little inappropriate but I am going to ask anyway:  I know that Mishawaka Marian has had a great season, this is undeniable.  But down here in the south all we have heard is how unstoppable Chatard is!!  Question: Is there a chance in this game for an upset??

Marian has had a great season, only losing to Mishawaka in a tight game.  Having said that, our starting RB went out in the second quarter of the Sectional Championship game against Jimtown, and in the third quarter of that game our starting QB went out.  Neither played last week, and our offense is definitely challenged without them.  I am not hearing optimism about them being back for Friday.

At full strength it would have been a huge challenge for the Knights to hang with Chatard.  Without the starting QB or RB....

  2. Really looking forward to the Marian - Mishawaka matchup.  The Knights have struggled to stop the Cavemen offense for years.  The Marian defense this year has great stats, but they really haven't faced a good offense yet.  It will be a very tough test that will tell us a lot about how good the Knights can be come postseason.

My revised picks as the season has unfolded are as the following

    6A: Avon over Warsaw, 42-24

    - I'm still in love with the local giant Lafayette Jeff, but I don't see them getting past a good Warsaw team. Avon is playing some of the best football in 6A right now, will be a tough out for anyone

5A: Valpo over New Pal, 35-31

    - I flipped a coin between New Pal and Cathedral. New Pal won best 3 out of 5. Valpo seems to be the best team in 5A, and will beat any and all takers

4A: Marian over East Central, 24-14

    - I honestly think Marian is the best team in 4A, will think that until a team beats them in the post season

3A: Chatard over Brownstown Central, 41-21

    - I just want to see May make it to the Oil Can, and Brownstown seems to have the team to get it done

2A: Eastbrook over Linton Stockton, 21-20

    - Linton might be a reach, but I like what they are doing. I want to see all the hard work Adamson has put into his career at Eastbrook come to fruition, and what better season to do it then when nobody is picking you?

    1A: Lutheran over Southwood, 28-22

    - 4 straight trips to semi-state should finally get this Lutheran team over the hump. Southwood seems to be a dark horse, and might be the North's best chance at beating South Adams for a spot in the Oil Can

    Marian is a 3A school.

    Marion is a 4A school.

  4. I am surprised by so many predictions of an easy Marian victory.  This matchup is never an easy one, and looking at CMA's schedule, I don't think this will be much different.  Surprised by the fact that they had difficulty with Memorial, but other than that, they have played good teams to close games.  Only lost to Brebeuf by a touchdown, and Hobart and Harrison are good teams.

The Knights did not play well against Jimtown, at least on the offensive side of the ball, and that was still a one score game with a couple minutes to go.  Other than that, Marian hasn't been tested - I look for a very good game Friday at Otolski Field.

So you think Tri-West is more likely to go North into 28 than Chatard?  Could be, just interested in your thoughts there?

That is one of the toughest calls.  Looking at the map it could go either way, and I thought I would send Tri-West north with Crawfordsville/North Montgomery.  We have seen the committee's propensity to lump the P/Ps together in sectionals in the past, which would argue for Chatard in 28, but from strictly a geographic perspective it is a tossup.  One of them will have to go North, will be very interesting to see which one it is.

    My stab at 4A

17: East Chicago, Hammond Gavit, Hammond Morton, Gary West, Highland, Griffith, Hobart, Lowell
18: Kankakee Valley, New Prairie, Culver Academy, Plymouth, SB Riley, SB St. Joseph, SB Clay, NorthWood
19: Northridge, Wawasee, East Noble, Angola, DeKalb, Columbia City, Leo, New Haven
20: FW South, FW Wayne, Huntington North, Logansport, Western, Marion, Mississinewa, Delta
21: Northview, Martinsville, Mooresville, Cathedral, Roncalli, Crispus Attucks, Shortridge, Beech Grove
22: New Castle, Greenfield-Central, Mt. Vernon, Pendleton Heights, Muncie Central, Frankfort, Lebanon
23: Madison, Jennings County, East Central, South Dearborn, Shelbyville, Connersville, Richmond, Greenwood
24: Ev. Reitz, Ev. Memorial, Ev. Harrison, Ev. Central, Boonville, Jasper, Silver Creek

3A has a LOT of gray area, especially in the north. Lots of clumps of 5-6 schools together. The realignment committee has its work cut out for it.

25: Hammond Clark, Hammond, Calumet, River Forest, Hanover Central, Knox, Glenn, SB Washington
26: Mishawka Marian, Jimtown, Tippecanoe Valley, West Noble, Lakeland, Garrett, FW Concordia, Heritage
27: Bellmont, Norwell, Peru, Northwestern, Maconaquah, Oak Hill, Yorktown, Hamilton Heights
28: Benton Central, West Lafayette, North Montgomery, Crawfordsville, Guerin Catholic, Brebeuf, Twin Lakes
29: Sullivan, Edgewood, Owen Valley, West Vigo, Greencastle, Danville, Tri-West, I.Ritter
30: Lawrenceburg, Batesville, Franklin County, Greensburg, Rushville, I.Manual, I.Washington, I.Chatard
31: Corydon, North Harrison, Salem, Scottsburg, Charlestown, Brownstown Central, Brown County, Southridge
32: Mt. Vernon (P), Ev. Bosse, Heritage Hills, Gibson Southern, Princeton, PIke Central, Vincennes, Washington

You only have 7 teams in 28.  Here is my stab at 3A North:

    25 26 27 28
    Hammond Clark Knox Garrett Northwestern
Hammond John Glenn FW Concordia Yorktown
River Forest SB Washington Heritage Hamilton Heights
Calumet Mishawaka Marian Bellmont North Montgomery
    Hanover Central Jimtown Norwell Crawfordsville
Twin Lakes Tippecanoe Valley Oak Hill Guerin Catholic
Benton Central West Noble Peru Brebeuf Jesuit
    West Lafayette Lakeland Maconaquah Tri-West
  7. I would agree with Bullhorn99 - nothing wrong with looking at each situation on its own and making case-specific decisions.  If the numbers would work in this case, why not do it?  It isn't the Supreme Court - precedence doesn't have to be a guiding principle.  Unlike the Muncie situation, there is no question that even if they lose more than 30% of the combined Central/Memorial student count, they will still be a 6A size.

While I agree that SB Washington does need an up grade on their facilities.  Where is the South Bend school corporation getting the money for this?  The corporation has a several million dollar shortfall now.

Great point.  Not only a current shortfall, but also with the property tax caps kicking in, very limited prospects for increased revenue in the future.

If the way the IHSAA has done things in the past holds, the combined school would remain in 5A for 2020 and then move up and be reclassified for 2021-22.

After absorbing Muncie South mid-cycle, Muncie Central competed in 4A (football) and 3A (basketball) with 1,600 students for one year. I believe a bylaw change would have to take place for that to change, so keep an eye on the IHSAA board meeting. I wrote a proposal and submitted it to my principal to be considered (that a school that consolidates mid-cycle would be reclassified with its new enrollment), but I'm not sure if it was ever submitted to the IHSAA.

Forgive me for not knowing the history, but was the closing of Muncie South, and the related change in school size, known two years in advance?  Just wondering if it truly is an apples to apples comparison.

Makes sense. With the 4 and 5 team Sectionals in 6A/5A, it wouldn't be that difficult to figure it out, or least much easier than it would be in some other classes, but I get your point.

Yes, I think this makes it a certainty that the two Elkhart schools will be a part of a 5 team Sectional in 2019 so that it can just drop down to a 4 team in 2020.  A couple of the earlier projections here didn't have it that way, but I think that is the only way to go.
