Not sure if Chatard is still this way, but they used to always decline the practice at the Dome/Can.  It always seemed like more of distraction than benefit.  That said, of course I can see the location benefit.  I'm surprised the Patriots went to such lengths for a practice, but I'm sure they will be ready today.

Chatard has been practicing at grand park two times during state week, the last 4 years to acclimate to the indoor climate.

  2. 2007 - yes, Zach Martin was on that team.

I’d be interested to know how the folks down south feel this 2023 HH team stacks up against the 2019 HH team.  I thought that 2019 team came was a juggernaut when they came to Indy, undefeated, I think.  And most BC supporters certainly did not expect the score to be so lopsided.  Do they still run the same offense?

also, what’s the over/under on number of posts before this thread devolves into another P/P vs. public school debate?

Who do you see as their main challenger?

I wouldn’t really know, other than looking at ratings, haven’t watched any film on the other 3A schools, I’ll watch some HH this week.  I’ve just seen enough title runs to know that you have to put together at least three good games.  And any team that makes it to state is a legitimate contender.  With that said, they are very, very hard to score on.  They’re healthy and have added another weapon to the offense with # 10.

To be clear, I am not complaining.  Pushing the game back to 8:30 will just allow me to toss back a few more warm libations while lounging in the Polar fortress in front of my IPad.

With that, I guess I have a couple of questions.  First, I guess I’m surprised a State Championship is played on anyone’s home field as opposed to a Neutral field like  any number of likely available HS or college locations in Indianapolis.

Second, why is this game on a Friday evening vs. Saturday?  Strikes me it will be a pain for Leo folks to have to be in Indy on a Friday evening v. Saturday afternoon.

Since you Evansville Memorial folks have a lot more experience with Soccer state championships maybe you can explain it.

PS - there is a certain irony in all this.  The Chatard Girls lost to Guerin in OT just a couple of weeks ago in the State tournament.

Boys and girls teams play the same weekend with all games at IUPUI.  3 classes.  2 games Friday, four games Saturday.

We had some recent discussions with the BHC about re-affiliating too. Not sure it will go anywhere. I think they wanted a pretty good chunk of change.

BTW, I have Brother's bike and ride it almost every night  - blue Schwinn Racer made in Chicago...

You still have kids at BCHS?

I love that.  Yep, last one is a senior.

Were any other Indy Catholic schools staffed by Brothers of Holy Cross? We too were a BHC school (in collaboration with the Sisters of Providence) and had brothers from 1925 until 2009 (when the last one passed away).

I’m not aware of any.  Cathedral actually re-affiliated with the Brothers of the Holy Cross about 8 - 10 years ago, although there were no Brother Eugene’s roaming the halls, and the Brothers had no input on curriculum.  So it seemed to be more of a marketing play to make sure everyone knew they were still Catholic when they were out speaking to the prospective students and parents of the deanery schools

Would be easy to put blame on Irish athletic department for the fiasco with facilities last night resulting in change of venue to play following day when Irish had the momentum but Chatard delt with same circumstances and came ready to play today and we did not.  Irish had 2 turnovers all season up until today where they had 3.  This will for sure drop them out of top 10 6A so time for some soul searching as there is still A LOT of season left.

Momentum?  Chatard had outscored the Irish 10-0 to close the half.

Grass is safer than turf.  Fact check = True.

    However....

Most high school athletic programs do not have the ability to properly maintain a grass surface for an entire season.  Most fields have multiple games on them each week as it is (some combination of Var/JV/Frosh/MS/Youth), throw in one Friday night downpour and ensuing mud bath, and that field is trash for the rest of the season.

Also keep in mind how much you would need to limit any access to that field outside of games to keep it in playing shape.

Having played at the Brickie Bowl in the 90's I can tell you that many high school fields will not be anywhere close to the "safer grass surfaces" discussed in much of the media right now.

If anything IHSAA should find ways to support/enforce the safer upkeep of current turf fields.  They need maintenance, and periodic replacement as well.  I've been on some turf fields recently that are not maintained well and by November they feel like the old Hoosier Dome astroturf.

This is absolutely the case for almost every high school outside of Guerin, who, by the way, has the nicest grass field I’ve seen.  When I played at Enlow Field back in the 1900s, it was shared by three local teams.  The middle of the field from the 20 to the 20 was dirt by the time October rolled around.

As a Chatard fan, it was a lot of fun watching Kolton Nanko (Yorktown) play his heart out last night. What a tough kid who absolutely played his tail off. Not really sure how he kept dragging himself back up off of the turf but it showed a lot of heart. In a dog fight I’d put my money on him as a “last dog standing” every time. I’m sure their entire team gave their all as they played penalty free football (which shows discipline and focus) but he really stands out. That kid has a future in football for sure. Good luck to him and the rest of their seniors and thanks for a fun game.

I would second that!  That kid is a warrior.  I was on the Yorktown sideline and the kids and coaches showed great sportsmanship all night.  The Yorktown community showed out.  Great student section, loud fans.  It was a fun night of football.

I've debated putting this on here for the last few days, but decided to do it because I think we too often hear about the negative, but rarely enough about the positive.

The young man in the wheelchair is Sam (last name withheld for privacy, although he is probably more well-known in Evansville than our mayor).  Sam has Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), a rare genetic condition.   His skin is fragile and blisters easily from even slight contact.  He endures painful bandage changes daily and has endured countless medical procedures and spent many days and weeks in hospitals.  He has literally fought EB every day of his entire life.  He loves Memorial, Memorial sports and is an inspiration to our entire school family.  And the Memorial family loves him.  He rarely misses any Memorial football, basketball or baseball games.  Saturday he watched the game from the sideline (and even attended the tailgate in the rain and wind for a little bit to help get the crowd fired up).  While he may not look it, Sam is widely known as the toughest kid at Memorial.  After the game (unbeknownst to anyone), Brock Combs, who was the clear star of the 4A game, received his medal and made his way over to Sam and hung it around his neck.  A few minutes later the trophy was presented, this picture was taken.  Very few people even knew it had happened until the following morning.

Image may contain: 4 people, people smiling, people playing sports and outdoor

This, my friends, is what HS football is all about!

Thanks to ALL the coaches across our state who sacrifice so much to help young boys become men!

Someone shared this picture with me yesterday.  Class act by Combs!

I provided a link to the roster that was in the IHSAA program had Chatard at 77 players ( you can check for yourself) The IHSAA has them listed at 700 students in the enrichment and classification.

Maybe the program only had the dress list.  Thought u could only dress 75.  If u look at the roster on the Chatard website, I believe there are about 88.  700 may be the correct enrollment number??

I made that very comment in another thread.  All I said is that, despite my haranguing about the Success Factor, the truth is that, if we were in 3A this year, we probably wouldn't be celebrating right now.  That doesn't change my opinion about the success factor.  But it's the truth.

Sectional 32 is almost always a very tough sectional -- and both HH and GS were high caliber teams this year.  Even if we'd have made it out of there, do I think we could've beaten Chatard again?  I watched your game...and I have my doubts.  They looked phenomenal.

I believe Chatard is at about 11% roster 77 enrollment of 700.

I think Danville was at about 7% roster 59 enrollment 801.

    Chatard had 88 players 10th through 12th, with enrollment of 690 - about 13%

I hope you’re not implying the officiating crew for this game was anything less than stellar. I was the IHSAA observer assigned to this game. Best officiated game I’ve seen all year. I was on the field the first half, and in the press box with 9 other observers for the second half. We all agreed the crew turned in a state championship level performance.

My comment was directed toward the HH fans bashing Chatard, NOT the refs.  Chatard played an uncharacteristically sloppy game with 13 penalties.  HH very disciplined and basically mistake free with 1 penalty.  It was a great game.  Nothing but respect for HH and southern Indiana football.  And mad love for those boys and coaches from Chatard.
