I saw that Penn was still like top 5 or 6 largest school in Indiana. That is still bigger than most Indy schools.  This isn't a size issue that has defeated Penn. It was complacency and at time the lack of buy in from the players. 3 of the last 5 years, on the field and sidelines you could tell, NO ONE seemed to care. Coaches wouldn't do anything and the players were stone cold silent. The D would ball out for three quarters and then get torched in the fourth because the O did not know how to sustain a drive. O-lineman would come to the bench and just sit there, no one would challenge one another. That changed two seasons ago and carried into last season. This past senior class cared and it showed. Players would hold each other accountable on the sideline.

I am not saying yelling determines passion, but when things are not going well or things are hard, and no one says a word...that scares me.

That’s a good breakdown. Can I ask what do you think the change was the last two years?

Heard Both Elkhart and Goshen have started interviews. I know Elkhart was wanting to get a jump on everyone else who is looking for a head coach.

Elkhart has a number of teaching openings which will help.

Elkharts opening never showed up on their district website, can you have a process without a posting?

There’s no way the Adam’s kid could be eligible to play right away….I can think of several situations in several sports where a transfer had to sit.

If you take a step back and use logic, Adams and the state do not sign off if something is extremely terrible with the situation. This wasn't a kid who wasn't getting playing time or anything like that. So for him to up and leave and EVERYONE sign off, there has to be a lot to the story. Will we ever find out truth, that I don't know.

Seabe Gavin, Riley Athletic Director , should get NIC "Coach  of the Year" for his scheduling  for the   football team.

Cute comment. I'll admit I posted doubt last year on here. I grew up playing in SB, my kids played in SB, my niece and nephews played in SB and I've always questioned how they have done. But maybe it's time to give this team some credit. They can only play who is on schedule, and half the teams have been conference teams or a fellow SB rival. But lets compare before the coaches showed up.

    Same team results:

Glenn: 2021 7-42 2023 20-0 and wasn't that close. At no time did Glenn threaten to score

Adams: 2021 6-39 2023 22-12 another one where score doesn't show how dominate riley was actually playing.

Clay: 2021 42-0 2023 76-0 Riley had more points in the 1st qtr then they did against clay in 2021. Running clock was started in the 1st, which I don't think is really in the rules.

They haven't played the NP, Bremen, or Jimtown yet but comparing last year to 2021:

    NP: 2021 0-38 2022 21-42

    Bremen: 2021 21-48 2022 40-15

    Jimtown: 2021 0-25 2022 7-19

These Seniors and Juniors took a lot of very lopsided loses, to now be in position to compete and in some case beat teams that embarrassed them. Without a change in coaching this schedule would still be a 1-5, 2-4 type record. While we're talking about it, this varsity defense has only gave up 18 total points in 6 games. JV gave up the rest. Another thing I was told about what they are doing that is unique is they all play 1 position. They have 22 different starters, and only a few players have even played a handful of snaps on other side of ball all year. They took over a team with maybe 30 kids on it, and because they play so many kids have 80 plus kids on the roster this year. I heard this week they already have 6 kids with college offers from there senior class, which means academically they must be doing something right also. But since it's jokes about COY for NIC, let's compare last years Champions schedule to Rileys this year.

    2022 Jimtown                                   2023 Riley

    Northwood         7-21                       Gary Westside         48-12

    Concord             0-14                       Glenn                        20-0

    Osceola Grace  64-0                       Adams                      22-12

    Glenn                20-12                      Clay                           76-0

    Bremen             35-17                      Indianapolis Wash.   46-6

    Clay                   69-6                       Washington              26-0

    Washington       35-0                       New Prairie

    Adams               35-28                     Bremen

    Riley                  19-7                         Jimtown

So what big difference between non-conference schedules do you see here? Osceola Grace would've probably been a good game with Indy Washington. They also played Adams, Riley played New Prairie who actually went to state. SO difference is Concord and Gary Westside? At the end of the day Gary did end up winning 7 games last year, and do have 3 wins this year. Concord won only 5 games last year, 1 being Jimtown, then beat Goshen twice, Plymouth and Wawasee. So where was the jokes last year when they won through a joke of none conference schedule? Where was jokes or questions on sportsmanship when they beat Clay 69-6? So I ask, when is it time to give them some respect and say maybe these coaches are doing a pretty good job. No matter who you play, it is not easy to win football games, and really not easy to win in the fashion they keep doing. Now they play is very good program this week, and from what I'm hearing hav nothing but total respect for New Prairie and know it's going to take alot to win game. So if it doesn't go their way, feel free to come back and comment on my post. But at the end of the day, nothing I said is false and these gentlemen and athletes deserve some credit cause if it didn't say South Bend before their school name the word would be this is a good staff and some quality players.

    Have a great day.

You know, I’m just going to pass. I’m still trying to grow as a person. 😂

I understand your point, and never said I'm a fan. But there has been programs that have ended regular seasons with losing records in Indiana and made long runs. Usually because they were one of smaller schools in bigger conferences. At some point Indiana will most likely change it's all in concept, but until then this is what we got.

  6. 17 hours ago, BLACKGOLD2007 said:

That seems like the most reasonable answer.  There is a chance it may work out this way.  Clay will "start" the regular season 3-0 at the varsity level.  Since Bremen, Jimtown and Glenn are all leaving they will either force it as a varsity level loss or just turn a blind eye to it.  If they turn the blind eye to it, those schools could pawn that loss off on the JV teams, even if they actually win the game on the field.

If the playoffs actually did seeding, then this would be very important.  However, since there is no seeding, even if you take the L at the Varsity level it does not affect your playoff standing.

Thats a very good point, and the benefit of playing in Indiana. Now only thing it would effect is their finish in conference rankings. They probably don't even care if they leave with a conference title or not. They are just ready to be gone.

They will probably count it as a JV game and Clay will count it as a varsity game.

So if those 3 count it as JV games, would that mean their varsity forfeit their conference varsity game against Clay? So would each of these 3 start out with a lose in conference and does Clay start their season 3-0? I'm just not seeing how they can cancel a conference game and it not count as a forfeit. Someone help me out on this.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA omg that is such a burn!

The NIC just needs to tell SBSC to begin the athletics merger now.  What will happen is the kids playing ball will either not play or show up for practice at what will be their future school.

Well if you go by the by-laws, those players would not be able to play varsity sports. So they are in a tough spot.

    1 hour ago, BLACKGOLD2007 said:

    Maybe they just don't care.

adding TV to their schedule is better for them in the long run.

This is also interesting, if they don't play Clay, and the NIC rules it a forfeit, but the team beats TV in their game, which record do you go with?  What would the IHSAA recognize as the proper record?

Yes this will be an interesting thing to monitor.

    Yep

I could be wrong, but I don’t think a school can play 2 varsity games a week. So did Clay agree to just play a JV game and cancel the varsity game? If not how can a team just decide not to play a conference game? If someone skips a varsity game, is it considered a forfeit? Interesting situation going on with Clay closing and those 3 leaving conference next year.

I see them now. I am not familiar with these kids which means I don't have familiarity with their programs. But regardless, outside of football, there are bigger issues to address here than how the playoffs will be effected. At least for the adults involved in those programs. This is very frustrating to see kids throwing away their lives or seasons or reputations for that matter. Hopefully they learn from this.

And these are just the over 18 ones. Under 18, you get ticket and parents have to come pick you up. These are just the only ones whos names can be released.

  11. 12 hours ago, SBFootballFan6 said:

Word out of the North a front runner is gonna be down 4 possibly 6 starters, possibly for the whole length of their run. Not much of a rumor, since the 4 names can be found on the inkfreenews.com

Really opens things up in the North, and could end up making a magical run come to an end before it needed to.

More word is getting out, looking like 10 total starters are possibly out. It is in the news if you look close enough, will see if it tries to be covered up. Feel real bad for the ones who did the right thing. This should really open the door for a different North champion.

I would imagine Penn would focus on the QB and RB  May boil down to how NP handles the Penn D

Penns front 7 on D is really tough, even the really good teams had issues with that. And Penn brings a large OL, and a QB who looks like he can catch a D sleeping and make some greats throws. I'm not sure it will be as close as people think. Wish we could get to see this one.

Riley owes Bremen. The Lions have got the better of them recently. I think Riley gets the victory in the Battle of the Miami Trail.

Bremen seems to be really rolling last few weeks, I know you have been hard on them this year but what makes you think they can't handle Riley?

    23 minutes ago, Rocket said:

They are a young team that I assume will only get better. They have some great athletes, and a sophomore QB that can really sling the ball. I think if they would have more of an intermediate passing game instead of going for the deep ball all the time they could have a lethal offense. They had good size and speed and pretty good numbers.

Thanks for the breakdown. It will be interesting then to see how they grow. But like many on here, have seen promising teams come through SB, only to be left disappointed. Only the Dieter lead Washington team really made noice when it mattered.

What impressed you about Riley? And from that what makes you think they will be a force next year? It seems there tends to be teams who come and go and start to get some excitement behind them in SB, all for the same old stuff to happen and they end up just as bad as all others. As it looks right now, Riley is only SB team period that even looks like they are playing organized football. Would be nice if the city had at least one team that can actually compete in games.

I think the answer to the original question, depends on how you define "South Bend." If you strictly define that as the SBCSC, the football is poor. Coaches will come and go, programs will ebb & flow, but SBCSC schools are likely never going to be competitive again. Especially in a School of Choice world. However, when most folks think of "South Bend", they're really thinking St Joe County. Penn, Mishawaka, Marian & St Joe all field rock solid programs. In reality, you can include Edwardsburg, MI in that orbit, as well. Good number of families have moved the few miles north of the border, looking for a quality, albeit smaller, school experience for their families.

You are correct most people think of the area versus the actual school corporation. But I ask to you, what if a coaching staff does stick around. I know it’s been 10 plus years now, but when a quality staff stuck together for 4 straight years at Washington they went to a state title game. Then the HC and DC left, with a few other coaches and things dropped off. But what if he stayed? What if what Coach Lee has set in motion, has a chance for them to stay together and build for the next 4 plus years. Why can’t they be a competitive program?

  16. 9 minutes ago, Wedgebuster said:

You just wish that the SB schools could play some more competition that deals with some of the same struggles as them.  When Riley has played those teams this year, they have fared well.  When they play John Glenn, New Prairie, Bremen, and Jimtown they won't.  Just too many cards in the deck stacked against them.  Now....if SB schools had a legit plan in place to develop their athletes, hire coaches, keep some long term continuity in programs, helped foster a youth league, etc.  they would stand a chance......but.........

You bring up good points about this current years schedule. They do seem to fair better when facing the schools with similar make up to them. Now when you talk about their chances of success against the teams you mentioned, do you mean strictly this year or chances ever? Because if you look back a short time to the 2016-2019 season Riley went 8-4 against  John Glenn, Bremen, and Jimtown. And those games point averages were 28 per game for Riley’s O and 19 they gave up. That sounds like competing, and that’s not 30 years ago. Let’s not let the last 2 years confuse things, even this years John Glenn game when you click on Broadcastsports and watch it that game could’ve went either way.
Now defense of your thinking is that their 16-19 success was under Coach Edison, that’s correct. But what outsiders don’t know is, coach Lee brought back the OC from that time as his Assistant HC/OC and his 2 sons and his sophomore son just had the SB Tribune write and article on him.
From the outside, but with some inside knowledge I can’t sit here and say they can win against the teams you mentioned to end this year. But what I can say is I would not be surprised if by next year you’re changing your thoughts on the direction of that program and who they can actually compete with.

  17. 5 hours ago, Football Guru 25 said:

Is John Glenn going to do anything?? Is Riley refreshed and refocused??  Jimtown??

First question simple answer, they play a SB school. Last few years when they did, typically good things happened. Margin of victory was significant last year, and then they added a winning coach.

Now on Riley’s end, the start stop of last Saturday had to be tough to deal with. We will see if they can use this new excitement and compete with a program who beat them bad last year.

Jimtown has been a consistent winner, and they will for sure bounce back after that defeat.

    North Division

Penn- I can't see Penn doing well in their non-conference schedule. Penn's defense has to step up and save them against New Prairie and Elkhart this season. I still have them at #1

New Prairie-  I see Penn/NP within one score. They'll be solid

Elkhart- this is a question mark. Last year it was 20? kids out. Can they keep kids healthy enough to compete.

St. Joe- I think St. Joe surprises a few teams. Defensively they'll keep themselves in a few games. I don't think their offense is there yet. They'll have to play mistake free football. They'll win the ones they should with ease.

Marian- Can they recover from losing Atkinson on both sides of the ball and special teams? Their RB was solid and MLB will be hard to replace. This year I don't see them competing in their conference.

Adams- not even Redman could save them at this point

    South Division

Jimtown- Jimmie's lose their QB and Johntu. Two solid players but I believe 24 was the better back. He looked better in the sectional game against Marian. Johntu struggled and I believe he was their lone TD against Marians JV during garbage time. Jimtown should be top dawgs of the conference.

Glenn - I'll slide Glenn to #2. Defense will still be solid. loosing Creed will hurt the Falcons a bit. Falloween is always a big hit.

Riley - I'll slide Riley to #3. Talks on the SE side is Riley's numbers are sound with the excitement the new staff has generated. Quite possibly the only SB school with a true JV team.

Bremen- Nothing special offensively. They'll find it hard to score this season.

Washington- Pushing Coach Johnson out who's now coaching at the college level has proven to be costly.  Kids within the program don't seem too excited. Could benefit Washington to consolidate Clay.

Clay - seems like Clay lacks solid assistant coaches who stick around long enough to develop relationships with kids. Clay will continue to struggle.

You have TurfToe or a concussion? I can buy most of what you have for the East/West Large school division, but the North/South come on.
Jimtown I can totally see them winning it again.

Glenn has been beating on door last couple years so may bump up to 2.

Riley at 3?! Again is it a concussion? They don’t appear to have competed in any game but clay last year. And year before beat Clay, Washington and Gary West. So we’re expected to believe a jump from 2 clay wins, a Washington win and a Gary West win to 3rd in conference? We shall see.

Have to put Bremen up at least 1 or 2.

And last two ok you got me there.
