I've seen a lot of Paoli picks on here , and understandably - they did win your conference. BUT, and it's probably just my PAC bias here - but I've been on this NP team since we played them in week 8. They are legit. Big, strong, fast. I would be shocked if they dropped this one to Paoli. (Paoli lost to Boonville.....we (SR) handled Boonville...and NP got us this year by a TD) - best of luck to both teams tonight.

NP is undoubtedly the best team they have faced since week 1...but a lot has happened in the last 11 weeks.

Hard to tell just how good Paoli is just by looking at their schedule.  NP definitely wins the SOS battle.

Paoli did beat Forest Park 50-14 last week. NP got them earlier this year 41-7. To me that is a better gauge on what to expect tonight.

I'm excited to see how it turns out. JH has it 38-24 favoring NP and I think that's fair.

I agree with the sectionals being seeded, it is long overdue.  The thing that gets me even worse is the charter and private schools in the tournament.  If you offer any kind of assistance or scholarships, I think they should be in a different tournament.  Look at Springs Valley.  They have to go play Providence, who we all know offers assistance.  I think this is unfair.  Indiana should do what Tennessee high schools did a few years back and have a public school tournament, and a separate one for private and charter schools.  Just my opinion.

    Agree 100%

At the very least they should automatically bump up one level and absolutely never be 1A

Yeah, I noticed that from the Google Maps overhead.  Is the visitor side at least elevated so that we can see?  I know it is an impossible question to answer but I wonder if they will have fans there....maybe we end up in home stands....LOL.   We have been to plenty of places where we have more than twice as many fans as the home crowd.

They will have fans there. This is the biggest game Scottsburg has played in half a century. They brought decent numbers to last weeks game. The school has a pretty good following.

There is space available on the visitors side for more bleachers. I would bet the athletic department puts something temporary in place. It's no secret HH travels well.

Meanwhile in 32, Scottsburg is playing for a Sectional Championship against HH ....oh those dang ping pong balls.

Correct. It would have undoubtedly been Southridge had there been seeding. That bracket was fairly lopsided as well.

If the wheels squeak long and loud enough they will surely get grease at some point.

Unfortunately there was only one scenario in 6A with Bend Davis playing Brownsburg and one in 5A with Bloomington North playing South in first round.

Seems it happens more in 4a - 1a when the sectional consists of more than 4 teams...which is a whole different issue in itself.

Our game with Triton Central on Friday was one of the best HS football games I have been to. So well-played, and so well-coached. Starting six sophomores defensively we were worried going against TC's experience and their D1 QB... we battled.

Long story short.... we led 17-14 with 1:30mins to go in the game and had Triton 3rd and 15. The game was 0-0 until under 5 mins to go in the 3rd.

No regrets, but that game never should have happened in round 2. Hope they can get the sectionals done correctly this go around in the spring. Congrats to Triton, they were really good on Friday, and good luck to them the rest of the way.

If anyone at the IHSAA ever needed a good example of why sectionals should be seeded this would be a great one.

Just not right for this to have not been the championship game. A successful group of kids worked their tails off and were robbed of one more week of HS football. Instead a team that started the tournament 3-6, who they beat 42-0, has the privilege of playing one more game only because of a lucky draw.

Meanwhile North Posey (10-1) faces off against Paoli (10-1) in what looks to be a slugfest to advance to regional. A true championship game. One could argue Triton takes an advantage in regional because they get to tune up a little in their final.

Something has to be done. Seeding just makes the most sense.

FWIW to you HH fans.... there are basically ZERO away stands. Bring your lawn chair.

Maybe this season's success provide initiative for more seating.

Coach Mullins has stuck it out and done very well for what he was given. It's definitely not an easy task to restart a program, especially at a predominantly basketball oriented school.

I want to believe they will put up some fight but my gut says HH runs wild. Regardless, I wish both teams the best and hope for an injury free game.

  7. I've been out of the game for a few weeks but will put these out there just for fun.

    Week 11 Match-Ups

Scottsburg at Salem - If Salem can play a complete game with little to no penalties they make it to the final.

Brownstown at Triton Central - Unfortunate this is happening in the 2nd round. Game of the week.

Switzerland County at Eastern Pekin - Run game is the key to this one. SC will struggle to stop Pekin as long as they keep it on the ground.

Forest Park at Paoli - Paoli rolls to the final to meet a very tough North Posey team.

West Washington at Springs Valley - Valley having their best season yet and tunes up for a slugfest against an undefeated single A private school...🤮

Bonus Game of the Week: Evansville North at Floyd Central - HHC Champs isn't good enough. FC looking to fill the trophy case while the door is open.

There is no explicit “uncatchable” exception in the NF code as appears in the rules at other levels. Some people - even a few officials - believe that this means you should call DPI on a ball that is clearly not catchable. Nothing could be further from the truth. The prohibition against pass interference is designed to give the receiver an unimpeded opportunity to catch the football. If he can’t catch it because it’s overthrown, or out of bounds, then he has not been deprived of that opportunity. Pass interference should not be called when the pass is uncatchable.

This is very helpful in understanding how the rule should be interpreted.

    Thank you

  9. 23 hours ago, Bobref said:

If the “tip” occurs after the contact that is judged to be interference, strictly speaking, it is theoretically possible to still have DPI. But keep in mind one of the elements of pass interference is that the receiver is prevented from making a play on the ball by the interference. If the “tip” causes the ball to be off target so the receiver could not have made a play on it even without the interference, it’s no foul. Also keep in mind that defensive PI restrictions do not begin until the pass is in the air.

This brings up a question. Is there such thing as "uncatchable" in HS. I've heard coaches plead for no DPI due to a ball being thrown to far, to high or out of bounds.

The general reasoning is, that is not a thing in HS and the DPI sticks.

I've just assumed the official uses their best judgement to determine whether or not the contact would have prevented them from making an attempt and if the ball is that far out the flag stays tucked.

Now, obviously, if a C tackles a WR running down field that's a flag no matter what.

Congrats to those who advanced last night.  Goodluck to everyone in the semi's.  Ok the deal on the Salem/WW Jv game is it was a mutual decision.  Both schools have agreed since 2017 not to play the game do to it being sectional week, this came from WW officials.  Also can someone tell me where i can find some film of the Valley vs South Spencer game?

Every team in Indiana has sectional week the same time. (Except the big classes) I'm willing to bet most play a JV game on Monday. It should be played in my opinion.

Unfortunately, for NH, they suffered some injuries to key positions towards the end of the regular season. They were unable to even play the 2nd half of their last game against Providence.  NH did have the best route to the final.

    Good luck Friday...

what's the difference between losing round one and round four

I applaud your attempt at getting responses.

When you are a player, coach, parent or fan and the end of your season is potentially determined by a random draw the extra games mean more than you seem to know. Especially to seniors, who most will never play the game again.

  13. Absolutely should be seeded.

I've never understood why Indiana does this. I'm all for an "all-in" tournament but moving on in sectional and playing extra games should be earned.

It happens all too often that a team can have a great regular season only to turn in equipment after the first round because they drew the team they should be playing in the final... Not exactly luck of the draw.

This year there are teams that have only won 1 game getting the bye. That should not happen ever.

I dunno. I dont understand alot of things. Lowery has numbers as high as I can remember when you consider all grades. Hope in future it changes. Do you know who gets county title since we all beat each other?

WW JV sits at 4-2. Loses to Valley and Paoli. Salem game listed as cancelled so unclear if they will get another

I'll never understand why they don't play us in JV. It seems to happen year after year.

Usually the reasoning is low numbers or preparing for sectional. This year they have the bye and have played plenty of JV games. Just seems like a lost opportunity for young guys on both sides to get playing time.

There’s a problem with not enough detail in the question. My answer assumes that when A recovers the blocked kick, it had not crossed the neutral zone. There are 2 possibilities here.

    1. This is unsportsmanlike conduct on Team B. Because that live ball foul is enforced like a dead ball foul, the period is not extended. Game over.
    2. If, in the judgment of the covering official, the B people coming off the sideline interfered with any possible chance Team A had to recover and advance the ball, however small, it’s a live ball foul for illegal participation by B. It’s going to be A’s ball for an untimed down after enforcement of the 15 yd. penalty.

This is essentially a copy of the play that came at the end of a very big game in Indianapolis 4 yrs. ago. They went with option 2 in that game. That choice is fully supportable because the blocked kick went directly toward the B sideline in the area where the players were coming onto the field from the bench.

This is as clear cut of an answer as it gets. Sorry Yucca… Bob wins this match.

The ball was recovered opposite of Team B sideline. Those players had no real effect on the result of the play.

Could, but with time having expired without a penalty that would 'extend' the period....  It still is a situation that ends the contest.

Had there been yardage attached, to the situation (with the picking up of the flag...there was not) .  You could not have a situation that would extend the period with an untimed down.

May I suggest that YOU forward this to the IFOA for a training video?

I don’t have the capacity to send any video. Purely just trying to understand what was called and why. I figured after the long conference the correct call was made. This has been helpful. Thank you.

  18. 4 minutes ago, Yuccaguy said:

Sorry about the "assumption" then...  And you know what ASS-U-MING means

The flag should have been a sideline warning... But the game should have been ended by the ball settling because of the block behind the LOS.

Had Team A advanced the ball (prior to the 'settling' of the ball behind) to the line-to-gain... then we'd have had a conundrum to figure out with Team B being on the field of play.

In this case...as you have given more info.  The contest is done.

B would/could be assessed a sideline warning (at best).  But at no time could A then possess the ball because they did not make the Line to Gain with the free kick of the ball.

I'm sorry if this doesn't satisfy what you are wanting in the adjudication of the play.....

Nope, you’re doing great. It’s truly an odd ending that is hard to describe. We are getting somewhere. Just trying to figure out what actually happened. No one really knows from my point of view.
The ball was recovered by the kicking team advanced a few yards before being tackled. Line to gain was goal line but here’s the kicker. It was just 3rd and goal. Does that make any difference.

  19. 26 minutes ago, Yuccaguy said:

So it DID NOT go forward to the 20 yard line as you originally said you never said it went backwards?

"Team B blocks field goal. Ball settles around Team B 20 yard line as time expires."

Dead Ball, game over.  Because you said it settled.  I'm trying to figure out how AFTER the time expired, that you could want an 'untimed down'?   It is a sideline warning at best....   Not illegal participation.

Never said it went forward to the 20 yard line. If we could kick a FG that rolls forward to the 20 after being blocked I’m certain this question would not be asked. That would be about a 40 yard attempt. I said it settles around the 20 yard line and Team A recovers as time expires. The ball was blocked backwards from the 5 to the 20, never crossing the LOS. During the play, immediately after the block and during recovery Team B’s sideline empties.
Never mentioned illegal participation either. I’m purely asking what the call would be. A flag was thrown, a long conference occurred and the game was over. No signal was given.

  20. 10 minutes ago, Yuccaguy said:

Did Team B ever "touch" the ball past the Line of scrimmage (20 yard line) in this situation?

Think of the Leon Lett play.  This seems to be an EXCELLENT example of what you are espousing in order to want Team A to again possess the ball..

    https://youtu.be/0rNQ4puNN5Q?si=v7xx5_OZUMkFcTJU

LOS was 5 yard line. Ball blocked backward to around. 20 yard line. Team A recovers. Flag thrown for Team B entering field of play during live play.

  21. Team A lines up to kick a FG to win the game. Team B blocks field goal. Ball settles around Team B 20 yard line as time expires.  Team A recovers. During the recovery Team B sideline empties onto the field in celebration because they don’t realize the play is still live.
    What’s the call?
