Luers just survives Eastside. Up by 14 points most of the night.  Luers almost blows it.  But holds on. Eastside had chance to tie after successful onsides kick. Eastside running game shredded Luers D. Questional Td for Luers.

When teams get to the level of Sectional Championships and beyond, I think "survive" becomes a more common term.  Having said that, Luers defense was on its heels most of the night.  The Knights will keep fighting.  That I am sure of.

While the MAC has canceled its fall season due to health and safety, there were also financial concerns as the conference was hit hard by the Big Ten's decision to play conference-only games this season. There were 11 Big Ten vs. MAC nonconference games scheduled in 2020 with payouts to MAC schools set to approach nearly $11 million in those games alone. Games against other Power Five schools were also canceled, leaving just five "money" games for the entire league.

Many athletic departments count on those big-money games against Power Five opponents to cover operating costs each season. Additionally, private COVID-19 testing is expensive and even abiding by the minimum standard of one test per week could cost programs significant sums of money over the course of a season.

  3. This was announced on Fort Wayne Local news.  From what I understand, It was stated that high schools can still have their own band contests, but they will not be sponsored by the state agency.  So it seems like the state has washed its hands of any responsibility if an outbreak happened at an event.

Yep.  I guess us old fogies are all lucky we didn't die.

Looked like a good, clean, hard hit to me.

You wear pads and a helmet for a reason, right?

Here is his quote from the young man about the hit:

"I went to the outside hard, came through, tried to hit him hard and take his head off," "In practice, we talk about driving through the guy. You have a point behind the guy, he's in your way and you've got to go through him.

Whew! I don't owe somebody a million bucks! (And I was right all along)

Did the IHSAA let this drag on too long? Yes.

But as far as I can tell, the Luers 2a vs 3A controversy started when the Luers Head Coach popped off to some local sportsnews website. So maybe he will learn a valuable lesson not to spread rumors.

Or maybe it was a calculated statement to bring the situation into the public eye?

I find it very interesting that the IHSAA has not released any kind of a statement about this.  I would say even a statement either way.  This is bizarre to me.  It seems that the IHSAA would want to get ahead of this.  The way this is going down really makes them look incompetent.

This came out from the IHSAA yesterday.  No mention of Luers.

June 24, 2019 Executive Committee approves updated football sectional assignments Due to the recent change in the Tournament Success Factor point system, an updated version of the 2019 and 2020 football state tournament assignments in Classes 6A and 5A was approved Friday by the IHSAA Executive Committee. The modification to the Tournament Success Factor at its April 29 meeting lowered the number of points needed (from 3 points to 2 points) by a school already playing in a higher classification to continue playing in that same class for another two years. Schools that win a regional championship in a single season or a sectional championship in back‐to‐back seasons would remain in that same higher class. The rule previously had required three points (two sectional titles and a regional title) to continue in that class. With that rule change, both Fort Wayne Snider and Indianapolis Cathedral each accumulated two points over the last two seasons, enough to remain in Class 6A and 5A, respectively. The sectional assignment announcement released on April 29 had Snider in Class 5A, Sectional 11 and Cathedral in Class 4A, Sectional 22, the same day the new tournament success factor rule was changed. Snider has now been assigned to 6A, Sectional 3, while Cathedral will be in 5A, Sectional 13. That rule change coupled with Elkhart Central and Elkhart Memorial consolidating to form a new and larger Elkhart High School which will compete in 6A in 2020, affects several teams from one year to the next. One of those is Zionsville, which will compete in 6A, Sectional 5 in 2019 but 5A, Sectional 12 in 2020. Previously, Valparaiso had been that school which would split time between classes but will now spend both years in 5A, Sectional 9. Another is Carmel which will compete in Sectional 4 in 2019 but Sectional 5 in 2020.

They lost three regular season games on the field.  If I remember correctly, they were toe to toe with Snider that year.

Luers loses a lot off good talent including Knapke and Presley, if they win 2a I'll be shocked.

Much depends on the talent they have and will have, along with the willingness to learn and grow.  Correct me if I am wrong, but the 1999 state champion team struggled during the regular season due to  youth.  It was the first varsity year for Anthony Spencer and the Great Eight.

Now two upset saints fans our suing to force Goodell to use that rule:

Two New Orleans Saints season-ticket holders filed a lawsuit against the NFL on Tuesday, asking a Louisiana state court judge to order Commissioner Roger Goodell to invoke an obscure rule that could force the final moments of Sunday's NFC Championship game to be replayed. No penalty was called after Rams defensive back Nickell Robey-Coleman hit Saints receiver Tommylee Lewis while a Drew Brees pass was in the air with fewer than two minutes remaining in a tie game. A flag for pass interference would have given the Saints a first down and enabled them to run down the clock before kicking a potential game-winning field goal. Instead, New Orleans kicked a go-ahead field goal to take a 23-20 lead with 1:41 left. The Rams responded with a late field goal of their own and went on to win, 26-23, in overtime. Robey-Coleman later admitted to reporters that his hit on Lewis constituted pass interference, while Saints head coach Sean Payton said the NFL office acknowledged the missed call to him after the game. Referee Bill Vinovich told a pool reporter that the play in question was "a judgment call by the officials" and added that he had not seen what happened. SAINTS OWNER SAYS TEAM WAS 'UNFAIRLY DEPRIVED BY MISSED CALL IN NFC TITLE GAME According to Rule 17, Section 2, Article 1 of the NFL rulebook, the league commissioner "has the sole authority to investigate and take appropriate disciplinary and/or corrective measures if any club action, non-participant interference, or calamity occurs in an NFL game which the Commissioner deems so extraordinarily unfair or outside the accepted tactics encountered in professional football that such action has a major effect on the result of the game." Remedies include reversal of a game's result or the rescheduling of a game -- in its entirety or from the point when the act occurred. "Why is the rule there if it's not going to be implemented?" asked attorney Frank D'Amico, who filed the suit in state Civil District Court in New Orleans on behalf of Tommy Badeaux and Candis Lambert. PETITION URGES NFL TO FIRE OFFICIATING CREW AT CENTER OF NFC CHAMPIONSHIP CONTROVERSY The NFL did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The question is whether an officiating mistake -- even an egregious one -- is the type of "club action, non-participant interference, or calamity" that merits the remedy D'Amico's clients seek. Mike Pereira is among the doubters. CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP "I understand the frustration," the former vice president of officiating for the NFL, now a Fox Sports analyst, told The Associated Press in an interview. But, he doesn't believe the rule applies in this case. A hearing is tentatively set for Monday -- six days before the Rams meet the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl in Atlanta.

How much of a priority is turf to the Luers folk?  Asking because I honestly don't know.  Maybe other school matters are deemed more important than turf for now?  Football seems pretty high on the list, so  I would venture to guess it might be on their minds, but haven't found a way to finance it yet?  That's a sizeable amount of dough to cough up on top of existing tuition, fees & other school or sports related expenses for the parents - and  sizeable for  some of the alumni as well, I'd think.

I'm going out on a limb here and guessing that if Luers already had the funds appropriated they probably would have "just put it in" by now.  Correct me if I'm wrong, though.

Is there a sentimental or nostalgic component at play here?  Luersfield is an iconic place for a lot of people.  Maybe keeping it grass is a way to keep the "feel" of the place the same?  Just a thought....

Years ago, money for Luers field was raised by such things as bingo.  Donations have helped with some improvements over the years (the track, for example), but the care of the field turf has always been done by a volunteer group of Luers Dads.  Some  nostalgia may be involved.  A major capital campaign has been going for a number of years now to improve the school building.  Field turf is probably low priority.  However, if a donor wanted to donate for just turf, they won't turn that person down
