  1. A bad day for the Mitchell Football program yesterday. Coach Kling is stepping down to take an assistant principal job in his home town of Mt. Carmel, Illinois. His father's health is a concern, and he needed to get back home to assistant his family. Really appreciate everything Coach was trying to do here. He was very invovled in the youth program. He put in countless hours in the weight room with not just the HS kids, but with our JH kids as well. Top to bottom, he did things the right way. Losing his son Jackson really, really hurts. The kid is just special. Not sure what is next. Skill position pieces have a ton of potential, but we are very thin and weak on the line. Current Freshman class is strong. Not sure on the JH outlook. I know the youth seems to be interested in football.

  5. Brownstown at Madison Charlestown at Corydon Eastern Pekin at Salem Mitchell at Scottsburg (Look for this to be competitive. Varsity has won two in a row. JV has won three in a row. Once again, Kling has gotten these guys better throughout the season. First few weeks were tough to watch. Took a couple weeks for us things out after we lost Turner to injury. Hoping we can continue to build.) 11. Impressed with my Jackets Friday After being down 27-8 at half, Kling and his staff did a great job making adjustments. We stuffed their run game for the entire 3rd Q. In the 4th, the Mustangs finally got back to their run game, and converted on a key 4th down on the way to a score when the Jackets had it to 27-20. I believe the final was 41-27. Youth shined through. I felt like Jackson Kling was in every play defensively at LB, and Malaki Goodman showed off his athletic ability on both sides of the ball, both freshman. SO RB Gavin Robinson was lighting in a bottle, with two 40+ yd TDs swinging out of the backfield. I felt Edgewood played to "not lose" the game in the 2nd half, but finally spread the it out in the 4th, and we ran out of gas. We have the potential, but we're only going as far as our line will take us. HUGE test for them against Valley Friday. IF we can figure something out on both sides, then I expect a shootout. I wasn't sure how long this rebuild would take, but I wouldn't be shocked at all if we ended up with 3-4+ wins this year.

  13. Thoughts on my Bluejackets after Friday's scrimmage with BNL... O Line is a work in progress. We have two starters that will not be ready to go until week 2. Turner is solid at QB. If we can keep him upright, he'll put up some huge numbers this year. RB is Gavin Robinson, who is a really good athlete. Only problem is that he quit in the month of July, then came back out last week. We played him JV in scrimmage and he dominated. Do we throw him in the fire Friday night or give him a game or two to "earn it?" WRs are a bright spot. Kale England and Lucas Gosnell are matchup nightmares with their size. Wigley and Luman bring in some speed. Bottom line, nothing matters if we can't figure out the line. Defensively, we are very young. We have 2 freshman starting in Kling and Mullis, but I wouldn't be shcoked if we had 4-5 freshman starting by the end of the year. Physically, they are ready, but this will be a learning process. BNL looked very good offensively, but it was just a scrimmage. Another concern I have is depth. Coach Kling has done a great job of building numbers back up,but I'll be curious to see what we look like down the stretch in the 2nd half this Friday. I was impressed with how we got better throughout the year last season, and hope that will continue. Once this freshman class gets their feet wet, Coach Kling will make a jump with this program. Hopefully it's sooner, rather than later.
  14. Biggest question for the Jackets is the line on both sides of the ball. Return almost everything in the skill positions. Ethan Turner is the guy for the full offseason, excited to see him throw it around in the fall. Kids continued to fight and get better throughout the year. Give Kling credit, plus he is also doing a great job with working with the JH kids. I think you'll see a slight increase in the win total each year, and the incoming freshmen class group will be "the year" for us when they are seniors. This season's W total just hinges on a lot of questions on the Line.
