Good morning and hello to all of my Wabash River Conference friends. Week 1 results were somewhat predictable. I think the Parke Heritage Wolfs might be the best team in class A this year. Brian Moore has his magic working again. Then I think South Vermillion will be the other best team in the WRC. It looks like Attica and North Vermillion are fighting for the third and fourth spots.

    Games this week:

    Clinton Prairie at Attica

    Parke Heritage at Covington

    North Vermillion at South Vermillion

    Benton Central at Seeger

    Riverton Parke at Fountain Central

    My picks:

    Clinton Prairie 26, Attica 19

    Parke Heritage 34, Covington 14

North Vermillion 29, South Vermillion 13

    Seeger 26, Benton Central 13

Fountain Central 35, Riverton Parke 6

  2. recap of week 1: anybody have insight to any of these scores?

What happened in Rockville? PH 52, SHS 7

What happened in Mecca?   AHS 50, RP 6

What happened in Ladoga?  SM 26, FC 0

What happened in Covington? SV 20, CHS 14

What happened in Spencer? NV 43, OV 8

On a side note, the mercy rule will help prevent a lot of 70-0 games this season. I read some games across the state made it into the 60 point range, but most stayed in the 40's and 50's. That will be good for football...

Defensive integrity meaning lining up correctly, players understanding their assignments, being fundamentally sound, not blitzing all the time to get your defenders out of position.  Basically, being sound on defense.  They gave up 62 points to NC last year, and I can't find the official statistics on how many rushing yards they gave up, but I know it was a TON.  Like an amount that is hard to do.  From watching his teams over the years, the defensive philosophy has become a head scratcher, and it seems as though it has gotten progressively worse.

Can the man coach, obviously yes.  Only my personal opinion, but I do think people lavish too much praise for him.  His win/loss record is impressive, but he is smart enough to jump ship when he sees a talent drop off, and has never stayed around for lean years at the respective schools.

Enough on this topic.....I know most will disagree.   I just don't see it anymore, especially when they play a team of equal talent or better.

Not sure about the staff he has at PH?  1 person can't do it all.

you are right, most will disagree with you (like all but maybe 5 people), but you are entitled to your opinion on a public forum, and I respect your opinion enough as a poster to drop the subject.....

Just hope everyone stays healthy and the WRC has a competitive and exciting season with few blowouts...

I said nothing to belittle any kids.  If anything, I was pointing out that NV is a better coached team than PH.  They lack defensive integrity which is why North Central ran for like 600 yards last year.  Maybe their defensive approach will change.  As long as it doesn't, PH will struggle to stop the NV run game.   Parke Heritage will have better athletes, but not better football players.  We'll see when we get there.....Coach Moore is due, and probably has a more talented team.  He has yet to beat Crabtree as a head coach.  Maybe that changes this year.   Time will tell........

what does defensive integrity mean? I honestly do not know....

Please keep in mind that HOF Coach Moore is 0-5 against Crabtree and North Vermillion as a head coach.   That does mean, however, that he is due.  Heard this same stuff last year heading into the game between these two.  Parke Heritage will have better athletes, again.  However, they fail to control the line of scrimmage, and lack fundamentals and integrity on defense.  With such superior talent and a HOF coach, they should win.  NV will be better coached and their kids know how to win.  If NV stays healthy, go ahead and make that -Coach Crabtree 6  Coach Moore 0.

A long way to go before we get to this game way down the road.  Good luck to all in Week 1.

I find a Brian Moore coached team that fails to control the line of scrimmage (unless they are outmatched) and lacks fundamentals like a unicorn: they might exist, but good luck catching one.

The man has cut his teeth in coaching on line control and fundamentals....

Unless Gibson Southern's QB has beefed up a bit, I feel like this is a bit of a stretch.  We had them when they played Henderson County last year.  Granted, conditions were not ideal, but if you rattled him and he had to move around, he was not very effective.  He is only a sophomore, so he is going to mature and improve, I just don't think this year is the year for that.

I honestly did a name drop when I said Gibson Southern. I do not know who was good last year in 3A outside of West Lafayette and Memorial, but I do know Gibson Southern is good, year in and year out, and are due for an appearance in the Oil Can...

Herb King is a stud coach and has revived a moribund Seeger football program. If I were starting a high school football program from scratch, he would be my first choice of all the WRC coaches.

I think we will start to see the fruits of Herb and his staff's labors very soon. I think that staff is finally getting these kids to buy in to what they are selling. This season could be the breakout season that this program needs to get back into the upper half of the conference. That's how I feel about it, anyway...

The 2000 Attica team that started the era you speak of was laden with athletes. I would argue that it was one of the best senior classes the WRC has ever seen. The two Seeger teams were extremely well coached and had good talent as well, and were very deserving of being in the tournament, but it wasn't until North Vermilion went to the state game in 15 that Again you had a truly deserving team in the tournament, (and some would argue they stole that win).  The Fountain central run was two years of being completely over matched, as well as Rockville's effort against Sheridan.  Not trying to completely disagree with you about this conferences success but over a 19 year period several 1A conferences have seen similar success.  I would agree that the WRC should hold its head up for having the success it has had but sometimes i feel people think that the conference plays truly competitive football and in reality it is lacking in competition.

I would argue with you about the 2000 Attica seniors being the best group of seniors the WRC has ever had. The 2004 Seeger seniors went 51-3 during their career, and most of them majorly contributed to that record as freshmen. Call me biased but that's my counter to your statement.

There has always been a stigma about the WRC not having teams being able to run deep in the tournament due to lack of competition in the conference. I had family who played football at Seeger and for other WRC teams in the late 70's through late 80's who heard the same thing being said.  I heard it when I went to Seeger in the late 90's-early 2000's. That statement will never change. And though other conferences in 1A have sent a team here and there in the last 19 years to the state championship, none have been as consistent as the WRC. 8 times out of 19 is not bad. The only other conference to make multiple appearances would be the Hoosier with 7 (Sheridan for 4, LCC for 3 when they were Hoosier members). You can argue the number of runner up finishes, and how badly some of those teams were overmatched, but it wasn't like they beat all WRC teams to reach the Dome/Oil Can.

For the most part id say you were correct but the match ups don't leave much to the imagination.  I think the power goes to the few  teams that have dominated over the past four or five years with the addition of Parke Heritage.   The WRC will always hold a place in my heart but I fear the days of a WRC school going deep in the tournament may be numbered.

I think a conference this small with the size of schools it has will eventually go into a cycle where you will not see a team make a deep run for a while. Nature of the Beast as I would call it.  Since 2000, the WRC has a pretty decent record in the state tournament. 2 state championships with 6 runner up finishes is not something to not be proud of. Considering the conference is located in west central Indiana, and a majority of the school districts serve as bed communities for larger cities with industry or the school is depending on tradition, I say that's a pretty good run.

But, yes, the WRC is overdue for a dry run, unfortunately...

  10. I'll start the discussion on here. Lets see if I can shake the trees and get you WRC fans to participate :classic_cool:

    Week 1:

    Attica @ Riverton Parke

    Fountain Central @ Southmont

    North Vermillion @ Owen Valley

    Seeger @ Parke Heritage

    South Vermillion @ Covington

I have not heard a lot of chatter this off season about a single WRC team except rumors, and I don't like rumors. So I'm going off tradition with my picks, hoping a few prove me wrong.

    My Picks:

    Attica 20, Riverton Parke 19

    Southmont 27, Fountain Central 21

North Vermillion 33, Owen Valley 20

    Parke Heritage 34, Seeger 21

    Covington 31, South Vermillion 21

  11. If I coached a team, it would be for my squad to be the most disciplined team on the field, and for every step/assignment of a play to be executed as close to perfection as possible. Wins will come if everybody does their jobs and commits as few penalties and mistakes (turnovers/blown coverage, missed tackles, etc) as possible. I might be stating the obvious, but my team would work towards these goals every single day.

  12. 1)Who is going to be the Class of the WRC this year?

2)Who should improve the most, all the way around? (not just by wins, but numbers at all levels of their program)

3)What program could under-achieve this season?

4)Any players to look out for? Dark Horse players, All State selections?

    my vote:

    1) Parke Heritage: not saying the WRC could send a team to state back to back years again, but it would be the start of a good trend. Having Coach Moore and any staff he assembles in your corner always helps

    2) Seeger: young staff, young team, lots of hard work, bigger classes coming up. They were 2-8 last year, and though its way too early for a win-lose prediction, doubling or tripling the win total could be possible if the stars are aligning in West Lebanon.

    3) Attica: I'm basing this off of incoming class numbers. Hard to win with only 17 kids on your varsity roster, and that could be a high number

    4) I don't know a lot the kids any more. just being honest. I will say, from a Seeger standpoint, you could say a kid by the name of PJ Amble could make some noise. 6'4", 250 pound kids who are strong as an ox and can move usually don't drop into your lap every day in the WRC area. Stay tuned

I agree with what most are saying on here about our draft.  I was also high on Butler out of Iowa State but see Campbell as a guy like Hill for KC.  Still not real excited about the Ben Banogu pick.  Mainly because I had not even heard of him before.  I am not sure that we couldn't have traded out again and still gotten him.  There may not have been a trade partner.  Maybe another Darius Leonard situation.

I'm hoping any of the 3 linebackers selected could turn into a Darius Leonard situation.  The kid from Stanford and the kid from Tarleton State also have the potential to really be something as well...

Man, it's taken me forever to get back on here.  Since I'm months behind, I'll just pick up post draft.  The Colts did pretty well again this year.  I really was hoping the Colts would draft Butler out of Iowa State.  After they passed on him and took Paris Campbell, I sat and thought about it.  Campbell is the perfect type of WR to fit in Reich's offense.  He is going to blow people's minds the first time he catches an underneath route and takes it to the house.  Now Luck has his "Marvin and Reggie" to throw to.  Great selection Colts!  I also liked the Rock Ya-Sin pick.  Great fit for the secondary as is Willis at safety from Michigan State.  With the guys they have resigned and coming back, the secondary looks totally solid.  I'm going to mention an FA signing here.  Getting Houston from KC was fantastic.  Putting him at DE and no more pass coverage will allow him to get after it.  I expect to see him back to double digit sacks this season.  I was a bit disappointed the Colts didn't draft any Defensive Tackles.  I thought They would grab at least one in the first couple of picks.  Even though Autry had 9 sacks, I still feel the middle of the D line is a bit "soft".  Then again, I'm not Ballard, so there's that.  Was also hoping for another linebacker.  Was totally surprised they took three of them!  Grabbing two offensive linemen at the end, was kind of "icing on the cake" so to speak.  Depth is ALWAYS a good thing.  So an early prediction:  With what we have coming back and what we signed in FA plus the new "recruits", I'd say the Colts will win the South and will be one of the early favorites to be in the AFC title game.  It's a good time to be a Colts fan!

I thought the same thing about Campbell. My initial thought was disappointment but then as I thought about it, Campbell could be a great fit for what Reich wants to do. And people keep forgetting about Cain, as that kid could be very dangerous too coming off his knee injury. I like Ya-Sin, and I'm sure Willis will grow on me. I think the DT position is either stronger than we as fans know, or Ballard has a FA in mind that he just hasn't signed yet. And you'll see Houston in coverages. The beautiful thing about any 4 man defensive front is the amount of stunts you can do, and I don't think the Colts will hesitate to send a Mike in on a outer gap and let Houston take care of the center of the field. Then again, maybe they'll get feeling froggy and use a Zone Blitz now and then, and Houston would be the perfect guy to drop out into coverage.
