  1. We had a player from the visiting team ordered by the crew to cover his knees completely.

As the player was coming to the sidelines he's all WTF'ing and "I've been wearing them this way all f'ing season (to his coaches)
The officials did make sure that he knew he wasn't playing unless his pads covered his knees and that the coaches were reminded that this was covered in pre-game.

I was under the impression the knees being covered was always a requirement.

Are the players complaints a result of other crews not enforcing the requirements?

So, you go to your local school’s game Friday night. You see the officiating crew, but it’s unlikely you know anything about them. Are they good? Mid-pack? Novices thrown together for the occasion due to the shortage of officials? Here are some things to look for that observers see a lot, unfortunately. There are lots of little nuances that someone trained in officiating can spot, but you’re not going to appreciate. But here are 10 things you can notice from the sidelines, the stands, or perhaps even on TV or streaming, that will tell you whether this is a good crew that pays attention to detail or not. They are, in no particular order of priority or frequency:

    1. Do the wing officials “square off” their forward progress spots? Proper technique, other than in goal line situations, is to trail the play up the sideline to the forward progress spot, and then move in perpendicular to the sideline. If that wing official’s route to the spot looks like a banana, that’s a sign of lack of attention to detail that doesn’t bode well for other calls.

    2. Does the crew make timeouts look like a local officials’ association meeting? Everyone on the crew has a specific job to do during a dead ball interval. That is not the right time for the crew to all get together and chew the fat.

    3. Is the sideline clean? IHSAA officials are under a very clear mandate to properly manage the sidelines. This means no coaches on the field itself at any time, except during charged or injury timeouts, and no one in the 6 ft. “restricted area” when the ball is alive. All coaches are fully aware of this. If the crew is lax in its enforcement of this directive, it’ll likely be lax in other areas as well.

    4. Is the goal line covered? Goal line officiating is probably the greatest challenge for a 5-person crew. There is a complex set of mechanics associated with goal line officiating, but they all boil down to one thing: having someone on the goal line in a position to rule on a TD. It’s not easy, and it’s not always possible. But if a kid scores on an off tackle run from the 4 yd. line, and the wing official signaling the TD is at the 2, that’s a real problem.

    5. Watch the two officials under the crossbar on a scoring kick (try or field goal). Are they talking to one another before the snap (they are supposed to be identifying eligible receivers and communicating that to one another)? Do they have to look at one another before signaling the kick? They shouldn’t. If the kick threatens an upright, and is above the top of the goalposts, does only the official on that side signal the kick? When both officials signal, do they do it in unison? Attention to details like these spills over into other areas of officiating.

    6. Proper use of the beanbag is another such detail. Does the back judge use a beanbag to mark the spot where every punt ends, even if there’s a fair catch, or the ball is downed by the kickers? When the ball is fumbled, do the officials mark the spot of the fumble with a beanbag? Do they refrain from using the bag for marking the spot of a fumble behind the LOS? If a kick was “first touched,” did they mark that spot?

    7. What happens during penalty enforcements? All 5 crew members have specific duties during the administration of penalties. Are all the officials moving with purpose? Or is administration left to the Referee and Umpire, while the other 3 crew members just sort of wander around?

    8. Does the crew hustle? I see a lot of walking around some Friday nights. That sort of body language can be interpreted as lack of engagement, which can be fatal to your credibility. Good officials avoid it like the plague.

    9. How many whistles blow at the end of the play? On most plays, two are plenty. One is better. Too many whistles means too many officials watching the ball … and not paying attention to other responsibilities.

    10. How does the crew handle the ball? Proficient crews use well-established ball handling procedures designed to get the ball back in play as efficiently as possible. It’s done with a minimum of delay, and the ball doesn’t spend any time on the ground.

Realistically, you cannot evaluate the crew’s performance in many areas without formal training and a better vantage point. But these 10 things to watch for will give you a pretty good idea of what you’re dealing with as a crew.

    Thanks for all of that.
As a chain ganger I now know better how to judge a crew and how they do things.

How do you feel about a runner going out of bounds to avoid a tackle? A QB throwing the ball away to avoid a sack?

I like smart football so both of those are acceptable to me.

I also like seeing basketball players actually use the glass.

    Other peoples opinions may vary.

Tipton is extremely young this year. They’re playing several freshman and sophomores. OL is struggling quite a bit after losing 4 starters from last year. Those 4 were all multiple year starters. The young defense has been pretty good. Tipton was down 6-0 to Cass with 8 minutes to go. They had the ball inside the 10 with a chance to go up 7-6 and threw a pick. Definitely a game they could have won. Same with game 1. As for Friday, if Tipton wants to have a chance it will need to play flawless up front. Carter had 330 yards and 6 TD’s against Lcc in the 2 games last year but will need some alleys to run. He was basically hit the second he touched it against Cass

Usually by more than one tackler, sometimes 3.

I would say so !!!  When last time Eastbrook was shut out ?

    September 28, 2012, a 12-0 loss to Mississinewa.
Prior to that a 2002 26-0 loss to a very good North Judson team and a 1996 32-0 loss to Yorktown.
The source I used stops at 1994.

I told every player on Tipton’s team that I talked to on Friday and all of their coaches that they played a great game!  I don’t play, so I didn’t play Friday night.  I don’t ever remember saying that it wasn’t a great game.  I remember how critical the Tipton fans were of Eastbrook fans for complaining about officiating last year, but what did you do this year when the outcome wasn’t what you wanted, complain about the officiating.  To be completely honest with you, Tipton’s fans in the stands were completely disgusting Friday night.  Eastbrook had an injured 16 year old athlete laying on the ground and what did Tipton fans do?  They heckled the player!!  I heard fans call the kid a wimp and yelled to get him off of the field, so to hear Tipton fans try to take the high road on me is comical.  That group of fans were the worst I’ve ever seen at a high school event.  I was on the press box, so I heard it all clearly.

I think if you think that it’s okay to heckle injured high school athletes, then you don’t get it!

    7 hours ago, BACKSIDEBELLY said:

Oh, the heckling was indeed bad.  If you were in the stands, you had to hear it!  Maybe you’re just used to hearing that kind of thing.  They were definitely yelling about the kid being attended to on the field!  I think you know exactly what I’m talking based on your comment about it being like 10 minutes.  It happened right below me, so I heard everything!  You can’t argue with it.  I appreciate your kind words about next week and I’m sure like the Tipton game, it’ll be a tough game and will be a great game.  I hope everyone is healthy and ready to go.

I was on the Eastbrook sideline and the only heckling I heard was from Eastbrook fans yelling "Show some respect"  which I suppose was because the players, neither Tipton or Eastbrook, were kneeling.  While, at the same time one of the Eastbrook coaches was reminded that he could not be on the field or giving instruction during an injury timeout.

Sorry, for some reason my quote button doesn't work. If you go to the ISHAA website or there is even an app, you can find just about any games live stream on there at this point in the season.

    IHSAA*

Just make sure you are getting a link to an actual valid stream link.
There were a a bunch of scammers that would show up with links whenever someone asked about seeing our girls soccer online during their tournament run.
The IHSAA has issued, and continues to issue warnings about these scams.

These games between Tipton and and Eastbrook have been quite the home advantage for the Blue Devils. If this is at JAS this would be a blowout

Recent* history has Tipton and Eastbrookt 1-1, both winning on their home field.
    (* verified back to 1994)

Nothing about playing at Tipton last year caused Eastbrook's uncharacteristic mistakes in the first half.

Maybe if he didn't spend his freshman season at Westfield, he'd break the record. Or maybe that was his dad's plan all along so he wouldn't be outdone by his son.

Anyway, looks like Tipton won the most improved move in with that kid.

Here's a snip of the Tipton football roster from 2019-20 school year.

Brought this from scores thread cause it confused me and in case some missed it.

I've seen refs on top of the play miss calls several times(who hasn't) and a ref further from the play come in and correct it but what really confused me the most is the catch and 5 seconds later lost it.... seems like a lifetime to have possession AND the ref not see it !

I assume Gonzo was on other side of field unless he was sitting with all his Tipton buds, so he has to rely on ref to get it right cause he probalbly didn't see it(didn't say he seen it).

Anyone else see the play ?(I assume Maynard was on the sticks so probably didn't get good view)  Video ?

Looked like a catch with a couple of steps and dropped it on the unnecessary reach. But I was wearing wearing my blue tinted glasses Friday night and it was straight across the field with players in the way a little.
Tipton video is from upstairs so sideline players might block the view. Heights uses an end zone camera so maybe they have a better view. would like to see it.

Madison Grant has the best nachos!  Undisputed!

I was highly disappointed at the MG/Tipton Volleyball game. The meat sauce was not near the same as it had been in the past. Not as sweet, not even the same color as it should be no where near the right flavor.

The grilled hamburgers/cheeseburgers served at the football games I hope are still top notch.

Pizza Shack Update... will now be called "The Shack"
The building is undergoing a to the bones renovation.  The old awning facade will come off that covers the upstairs windows so that space can become a lounge.
The menu will be expanded to include grill items, the pizza and salad bar will remain.

The new owners have extensive experience in the restaurant and food truck business, this is no rookie effort to revive a business.

  14. 4th and short 1 quarterback lines up in a pistol formation, steps forward, take the snap and easily passes line to gain.
Officials flagged then for illegal procedure.
Coaches argued, unsuccessfully, that the QB was just going under center to take the snap.

The implication you are trying so ham-handedly to foster is silly. You're embarrassing yourself.

2012 when Luers played, and won, the regional at Tipton the crew was from the Fort Wayne area.
As it turned out, the crew was excellent and did a fine job controlling what turned out to be a difficult situation at times.

I seem to remember someone stating that the Tipton Blue Devils took it's name from a division of the Army in WWII.

The Noblesville Millers took their name from the millworkers on the south side of downtown.  The mascot is similar to Purdue Pete.

The Sheridan Blackhawks are named after a bird that doesn't exist.  They were not named after the Indian tribe or the helicopter.

WWI not II and it was a French unit that was referred to as Blue Devils
Interesting aside... Elwood changed mascots and colors frequently in the early years and used Blue Devils before they switched permanently to the Panther in the mid to late '20s

I found it interesting that Noblesville's mascot resembled Purdue Pete but for the school song the music is the IU song. Also, all of the schools in Northern Hamilton County that eventually became Hamilton Heights used the IU fight song as well.

I find it interesting that "The Blackhawk" somewhat resembles a vulture only with feathers on the head.

How many players play on both sides of the ball?  There are a lot of Pioneer kids playing offense and defense, special teams, etc..  If this turns into a track meet, is there an advantage if Luers doesn't have as many two-way players?

Pioneer's offense is just so methodical.  They execute and grind it out 4-5 yards at a time.  Can they eat a lot of clock and keep the ball and limit the number of Luers possessions?  I saw the Panthers also go to the wildcat look a lot and they didn't just run the ball, they threw it pretty effectively a couple times.

Luers has very few two way players.
At Tipton whenever there was a possession change or special teams play it was a wholesale change of personnel for Luers, stepping on our chains and getting in our way as we were trying to get to where we needed to be. When there is 22 bodies moving through that area it can get congested.

Hey Maynard... what is the status of Fred ? Is he going to keep up ?

When we are on offense I can drag Fred, when we are on defense I sometimes have to prod him down the sideline.
Maybe Kory should have got the deluxe cattle prod option when he got us new sticks and chain.

If Doug is good to go this week won't have to worry about Fred.
