Meaningless in the sense that regular season game outcomes have zero direct effect on the postseason.

I guess I would say "So what!"?

Why does there need to be a connection between the tournament and the regular season?

If someone is unable to see the value and impact that involvement in a regular season of football provides for players, schools, communities, etc. I just don't know what to say.

I'm actually intrigued by the concept of a qualifying tournament; I just have yet to hear a practical argument that I could get behind.

And I bet your feelings would be exactly the same, even if your team were eliminated from playoff contention by Week 6 under a qualification format, right?

And if that is the case, why does a change in structure need to occur?

Also, if that is the case, doesn't that defeat the argument that a qualification structure provides more meaning?

There is a big distinction between “meaningless” and “less meaningful.” Every game, practice, weight workout, film session, etc., has some meaning. The point being made is that a playoff qualification format makes regular season games “more meaningful” than they are under the all in format. As I’ve said before, I don’t see how anyone who has ever been involved in playoff football can disagree with that.

Footballking16 in multiple posts referred to the regular season as meaningless--that is the exact wording--the posts did not say "less meaningful".

Quantify 'more meaning' for me. Would a playoff qualifier universally create more meaning or would it simply modify/change the meaning of the regular season for a certain number of schools?

I am not staunchly in the camp of keeping the 'all-in' format. I would just like to see a more practical or quantifiable reasoning than the "more meaning" argument.

Show me another postseason format in any sport at any level where your regular season record doesn’t determine your seed/draw/opponent come postseason. A team in Indiana could theoretically not play a single regular season game and still compete in the postseason. It’s madness, make it make sense.

I really am curious to know how you come to the conclusion that regular season games are meaningless. Having played, coached, and parented through more that 30 years of high school football in Indiana, I never found myself sitting there during week 3 or 4 or whenever thinking, "Gosh if only we would have a qualifying format, this game would actually have meaning, but since we don't and the game is meaningless, I really just don't care at all what happens Friday night." By the way, I've also never had anyone I'm connected with express that peculiar thought either.

Sorry if I was unclear I was saying if you reclassified ever 2 and success factor over 4 might be a little tricky nightmare might a bit much.   I just think it would work more smoothly  if have have them on  same page of 4 years

No that is what I was talking about.

How would it be more difficult to continue to do classifications every 2 years, and implement success factor changes every other classification (every 4 years)? I'm unclear about how it would potentially be a nightmare.

. . . but from a planning stand point do one ever 2 years and the other 4 could be a nightmare.

How would it be a nightmare? What part of classification would be more complicated that the current set up if it were a staggered 2 year 4 year approach? (honestly asking here--not trying to be argumentative)

People have said that this need to be a 4 year deal and not 2.  So why not try it and see what it looks like.  We all know the number this year are going to messed up this yeas so let us try the 4 year plan.

I think people say that the success factor calculations need to be over a 4 year period of time. Following it over the years, I would guess that significant population shifts happen quickly enough that waiting 4 years to reclassify would simply be too long.

Um..surely someone has sat down and explained the whole pandemic process with him (from an enrollment standpoint ) that is. To use this years enrollment numbers for the next 2 year cycle would just be irresponsible - surely the Commissioner would be aware of that??

He statement to the press doesn't seem so ??

I'm with you that enrollment figure for this year will be inaccurate,  in some cases wildly so, but what would be the solution to the problem? Using old enrollment numbers would in a number of cases be just as inaccurate right? (Given the rapid growth in some areas of the state and the rapid decline in other areas). Just putting it out there as a topic for discussion and generation of ideas.

His proposals do nothing to address that.

How so? Loosening restrictions and limitations will put more fans in the stands, right? With enough butts in the stands, couldn't that potentially cover the 2021 season and at least in part "pay back" some of the losses in the 2020 season?

Another approach--For most schools, football is the only "money making" sport and a number of other sports are funded at least in part by football revenue. I suppose administrators will do what they can in most cases to continue to fund the "money maker" in hopes of recouping some revenue loss, and if that approach leads to some cuts in funding for other sports, that will be the approach a lot of schools will have to use.

Any chance games get changed because of travel expense? What is everyone's thoughts.

Isn't that a question about the future/next season?

The question was about lost athletic department revenue from this season. No one was talking about covid next season.

And it's impact on the coming season.

Agree or not, DE's response addressed the original question with a suggestion about how to get more butts in the stands, to increase revenue and hopefully avoid cost-cutting measures. Did it not?

Ouch!  McCutcheon and Anderson lost to Harrison by a combined 84-14 this season ... McCutcheon was shutout.  Kokomo didn't play due to KOVID, but was KO'd by McCutcheon 24-7 in the first round of sectionals.  Not sure Cathedral plays those two games of sectionals, but it should be lots of opportunity for non-starters to get playing time in tourney play.

Wouldn't you be able to say this about approximately 80-90% of the teams who would be so unfortunate as to face Cathedral in 5A next year? (or for that matter 4A this past year?)

The classifications are based on *this* year's enrollment, not necessarily next year's projected enrollment.

The same article you're referencing stated Clark & Hammond will be merged, and Gavit/Morton are being merged, so I combined their enrollment numbers (Morton at 2,063 and Hammond at 1,596 ... but the projections are actually *more* students than currently attend the schools). It will be interesting to see how the IHSAA handles this. Usually, what it will do is add together the enrollments of the schools being consolidated.

Yes, it will have a substantial influence because it will shift some schools right on the border between 5A and 6A, and depending on how it shakes out, sectional alignments could be significantly impacted.

You always do a great job with this every reclassification.

Morton will be 6A and Hammond High will be in 5A.  Valpo will remain in 5A.  Looks like sectional 9 will be Hammond High, Munter, Valpo, Michigan City and LaPorte with two of the schools having a play in game to open the tournament.

Here's a quote from a recent article in the Times of Northwest Indiana:

"At the high schools, Hammond administrators project 1,793 students will attend Hammond Central and 1,930 will attend Morton."

Based on this, both Hammond schools would be 5A. Is there more recent information to point Morton to 6A?

Then why did the volleyball team play a game less than a week after two of their athletes were in quarantine?

    Just curious that's it.

I've had about 20 students quarantined in the month since we started school. Only 3 have remained quarantined for the entire 14 day span. The rest returned within 2-3 days of being quarantined. The "contact traced" potential Covid contact that these students encountered ended up testing negative in each of the cases.

Not much science in my response.  My methodology was using this data that is a little stale now (June 3rd).  I picked 40 because it was kind of in the middle of the jump to 3 percent estimated relative risk of death from COVID-19.

Not trying to pick a fight-the value of that graph is a bit of a head scratcher for me.

I bet both of us are hoping that all the statistics point toward a great complete season by the time mid-August rolls around.

HS football teams are going to have cases.  Kids will move in and out of quarantine and all will be fine.  It's the teachers, coaches and administrators over 40 I worry about.

Why over 40? The 40 to 49 age group death rate in Indiana is 00.6% (Likely actually much lower if the asymptomatic "unknown" covid cases could somehow be determined and folded into the statistics).

The Bowsman Strong movement was to honor a man who made a who difference on and off the field. It should remain reserved for men of honor on the gridiron. It should not be used as a movement every time someone in the state of Indiana wants to honor someone or something. It should be reserved for an elite level of situations.

Would you say it could be used in unique situations? Situations that may (hopefully) never happen again?
