MLB certainly doesn’t think so, and you can bet they’ve done a lot of sophisticated market research before they reached that conclusion.
Well, that does respond to either of my questions at all.
Regardless of what MLB is doing (BIG difference--increasing the number of playoff teams rather that reducing the number of tournament teams), after week six for example, wouldn't a team sitting at 4-2 experience roughly the same amount of increase in 'stakes' and interest as a team sitting at 2-4 a decrease in 'stakes' and interest?
And if these two teams faced each other in week 7, how would this bring about a more competitive regular season game?

. . . The stated purpose is to make the stakes for regular season games higher, to make for more competitive games, greater "buzz" and, of course, the increased revenue that flows from that.
Wouldn't it be a zero-sum game where as the 'stakes' and interest increase for one team or a group of teams moving toward qualifying, they would necessarily decrease for teams moving away from qualifying?
Also, how exactly would this make for more competitive games?

I have never once, in this thread abashed or chided students, or their decisions to select the college they wanted to attend.
You all jumped on that stage coach. And it left town.
I'm still waiting for you to supply any legitimate data that shows IU or Purdue or anybody is taking more walk-ons now than in the past. The ultimate premise is that Coach Allen is being selfish and suddenly taking too many walk-ons. Is that premise even legitimate?!?! Where are your numbers?

Then Tom needs to put the money out there, and Don't dangle a carrot in front of these young men's noses. When they could very well be playing or starting, with scoli money at another institution in Indiana. This will weaken the the smaller schools rosters. Not fair for Tom to glut the "Indiana's best" marginal players.
Are there more walk-ons going to IU or Purdue now versus 5 years ago? 10 years ago? I asked earlier and got no response. Kinda makes me think you don't have data to back up your assertion that there's some sort of 'new' problem with larger universities taking too many of this type of student-athlete.

Allen has a distinct advantage with “Indiana’s best” marginal high school players , to the disadvantage of the smaller schools. It’s a Lot easier for these kids to accept a walk on to IU ,than try to get the help needed from parents and coaches to amassing film , statistics ,data necessary to cull a scoli from these other schools. Some don’t have the help or no one will give them the help.
Well wouldn't they need the same film, stats, data, etc to get a preferred walk-on spot at IU or Purdue? How else would IU or Purdue evaluate and determine these guys are capable of walking on and surviving in college?

Preferred walk on roster for Indiana University is bulging at the seams with Indiana kids. Depleting the available instate athletes for smaller state colleges and universities. including ,but not Limited to.other In state D1schools. Most of these kids will never see the light of day in their career at IU. whether Allen thinks he’s being generous or what. This is not a good thing.
Where do you find the preferred walk on roster? I looked quickly and couldn't find one for the current season or any past season. If there's no preferred walk on roster out there for any season, how do you know that the roster is larger now that it was last year? 5 years ago? 10 years ago?
Or is it that it's just more public now because all of them are posting it on their twitter accounts for all to see?

Can you expand on what advantage being so far behind the center would provide an OL?? More space to gain momentum on a run block? Easier to get to pulling lanes??
It is a decided advantage to the OL in at least three situations--1) Very difficult for DL to make contact with OL as OL is down blocking/down blocking to 2nd level guys (Allows for a free release to LB's) 2) A real advantage for the OL to get a step or 2 in before contacting DL when zone blocking-particularly on outsize zone 3) When they can get set up on their pass pro and be ready to engage a pass rusher-A lot easier with that added depth (It's also easier to pick up twists and blitzes).
The problem with an official simply handling this between plays is that it will fix the situation for a short stretch of the game, but if the OL is being coached to do this, they are also being coached to stretch it back out again in a fairly short period of time. Until there are teeth to the correction, teams that do this will keep doing it and keep gaining that extra edge.

Is the State now divided East/West in 3A?
When did the north side of Indianapolis become southern Indiana? (and yes, I know teams from the northern 'burbs' and farther north have been pushed south before).

The IHSAA, historically, has not reclassified schools when they consolidate mid-cycle. Muncie Central competed in 3A basketball and 4A football with an enrollment north of 1600. Unless there's a bylaw change this spring, Elkhart will be in 5A in 2020.
Check page 8 of the IHSAA document.

No, Valpo will not drop down to 5A mid-cycle. They are 6A for both years.

For 5A, do you think they might send the Elkhart schools over to Munster, LaPorte, MC for one year? That way when Valpo moves down, that 5A sectional will make more sense geographically?

Aren't classifications supposed to be published by the end of February? So this will be coming from the IHSAA today presumably, right?

. . . but it makes you realize how vulgar Carmel's enrollment looks when you see these schools . . .
Really curious word choice here. I'm not sure what description you are trying to apply to Carmel, but "vulgar" doesn't make much sense in this context. Maybe I'm missing something.

The IHSAA would not want to be in a position where they have to say: Well we made the change last time because it was easy to switch a few schools from the same area. It doesn’t work this time, so we’re not doing it.
Why would that be a problem? The IHSAA is, at least in part, a decision making institution, right? If member schools believe the decision is in the best interest of high school athletics, it should OK in this case, and not necessarily applicable down the road. I don't think that precedence is always the deciding factor.

So, I am simply curious, when one looks at enrollment numbers, why couldn't they just do this:
2019
6A Sectional 2-Valpo, Chesterton, Penn, Warsaw
5A Sectional 9-Munster, Michigan City, LaPorte, SB Adams
5A Sectional 10-Mishawaka, Elkhart Memorial, Elkhart Central, Concord, Goshen
2020
6A Sectional 2- Chesterton, Penn, Warsaw, Elkhart
5A Sectional 9-Munster, Michigan City, LaPorte, Valpo
5A Sectional 10-Mishawaka, Concord, Goshen, SB Adams
I think you might be onto something here. I've heard rumblings that something like this is a very real possibility (one rumor is that it's a done deal though not official yet).

. . . So coaching vendettas against other teams get in the way . . .
Interesting conclusion to jump to. Why do you go that direction?
-
So here's a question--will the IHSAA have to put 33 teams in 5A in anticipation of the Elkhart consolidation? If they do, BNL would potentially be in 5A, right?
If they don't, in 2020 there will only be 31 teams in 5A so in 1 northern sectional 1 team will have a bye to the sectional championship game, right?
-
I think someone asked earlier, but I didn't see a reply:
Does anybody have the total number of football playing schools for this next cycle?
Also, do I have this right? The approach by the ihsaa is as follows: 64 teams in class A through 4A; 32 teams in 6A; 5A will have 32 or more depending on how many more than 320 football schools the state has.
