Karlaftis is the most highly regarded defensive recruit ever out of Indiana.  a 5 star talent who chose local favorite Purdue over national player Miami.

Big George ran roughshod over small school competition for 4 years at West Lafayette.  Is he the real deal ?  2020 season will be a huge year for GK as Coach Brohm is counting on the true sophomore to anchor a typically weak and anemic PU defensive line.

Caden Curry is enjoying his sophomore year at Center Grove and watching his recruiting rankings rise with every update.  The super soph is a 4 star talent, with room to grow into a 5 star over the next two seasons.  Curry plays in the rugged MIC, the Midwest's top high school football conference.

When its all over and done, I see Curry enjoying a long career in the NFL as a defensive end in the JJ Watt mode.

Big George?  Not quite as big and strong at the major college level as he was playing 3A competition in high school.  Doesn't have the frame to carry 290 plus pounds.,

    Edge goes to Curry

    Your thoughts?

I mean “Big George” was only a Freshman All American, 2nd team All Big Ten, and led the country in TFL’s by a freshman. Don’t see the need to harp on George for playing 3A football and being the best player on an undefeated state champion team. The MIC argument is completely irrelevant since George has already played a season of Big Ten football and has shown what he can do. Im sure Curry and any D1 bound DE hopes they can have as good of a freshman year as George did. We all know the MIC is the best football conference in Indiana doesn’t change the fact George had a stellar freshmen year. Maybe Curry will end up being better, but don’t try and downplay George because he played in 3A when he was one of the best defensive players on a Big Ten team as an 18 year old.

  2. Speaking on next year, I would love to see some of the Lafayette schools play bigger opponents. West Lafayette vs a lower tier HCC school like Franklin Central or Noblesville would be a good matchup. Lafayette Jeff vs a “rebuilding” (using that term cautiously) New Pal would be very interesting. WL Harrison vs a school like Gibson Southern or Brebeuf would be a great challenge for them.

How good is Merriville's passing game and pass protection?  If they are as good as Harrison, which is probably an average passing team for 5A, then that 30 for Merriville, might be a tad low.  I expect that Jeff spent most of the week off working on the secondary as that's probably the glaring chink in the armor.  Also, I'm hoping that they also spent some time on kickoff too.  Not sure what was going on at the Tech game, but I think there were at least 3-4 kickoffs out of bounds and most were up closer to mid-field than the goal line.  Can't afford to give a 6A opponent like Merriville as short field throughout the night.

It’s hard to tell, they don’t have any stats on maxpreps. I plan on watching the Merrillville Valpo game before Friday to get a better grip on them. And you’re right, Jeff can not afford to kick out of bounds. Wouldn’t be surprised to see them pooch it to the 30 or 35 like they were doing a lot earlier in the season. Good news is their kicker is capable of hitting FG’s around 30 yards. He made one to give them the lead against LC this year.

I give Jeff credit for putting a MIC team on their schedule. We didn't think LC was going to struggle this mightily this year. Seemed like a nice win early in the year.

I mean yeah LC is definitely the 2nd or 3rd “worst” team in the MIC this, but with LC beating BD and LN I wouldn’t say it isn’t a good win. It’s impossible to read the MIC this year. I would have said North Central was the best team prior to last week. Now I have no clue

Their last 5 games were against smaller schools that are waiting for basketball.  Only Tech has a winning record (5-4).  The days of Jeff putting up big numbers may be over this year.  We will see if their defense can keep them in games!

3 players with a D1 offer on the DLine alone, if Merrillville has a good passing game they will have a real chance at winning, if they are run heavy it does not bode well for them. Hoping it will be a great game. I really don’t think Jeff will have a problem scoring 30-40+ points, but they will no doubt rely on their D to win this one

That was on display tonight.  The score looks like they handled AT easily, and they mainly did, however; they are vulnerable in the secondary.  Tech was far and away out-sized tonight and that, plus the Jeff offense, kept Tech from ever really being close to even thinking that they had a chance.  Nonetheless, Jeff imploded on the opening drive coughing up the ball on Tech's 17 and then, in the closing minute of the 1st half, turned the ball over on a pickoff at the line of scrimmage.  Tech also stopped Jeff's offense inside the Tech 30 on a 4th and four.  Jeff's kicking game also saw a missed PAT from the 1/2 yard line after two Tech penalties in a row on the PAT and at least four kickoffs that were kicked out of bounds for penalties.  Toss in a breakaway run up the middle and it's a good thing that Jeff wasn't playing Merrillville tonight.  A couple of unsportsmanlike penalties and personal fouls tossed in and a sideline warning and there are a mix of items that should give pause/concern.  They might have been looking ahead to next week, but they've got to get things ironed out this week or they are going to get the rug pulled out from under them.

They didn’t play perfect, but Jeff has scored less than 47 only one time through 9 games. And Merrillville did not exactly look too good against a slight above average Chesterton team tonight, only winning by 7. I still believe Jeff beats them by 2-3 scores on their way to their first sectional title in 17 years. No team has been able to slow down Jeff’s O this season

  7. Jeff’s defense is much better than people give it credit for. Honestly, you’d have a hard time telling me their D-line isn’t a top 10 D-line in the state. With that being said, their biggest weakness is far and away their secondary. Teams who air it out will have a great chance to match Jeff’s high-octane offense. But Jeff plays at such a ridiculous pace, it will be a challenge for any team before semi-state to slow them down. I’m not saying they have a cakewalk, but they have to be favored against Merrillville, Crown Point (assuming they beat Lake Central), and then most likely Warsaw if they were to make it to regionals. A semi-state meeting with Homestead, Carmel or Fishers looms but, like what someone said in another thread, if any year is their breakthrough year it is this one. Shanley has done an amazing job at Jeff and I hope he stays around for the long haul. Jeff has the athletes year in and year out to be able to compete with the top half of 6a. Wouldn’t it be something if the Bronchos earned an invite back to the HCC. They’ve beaten Noblesville and Westfield the past 2 years and played Carmel tough last year

Margin victory is a meaningless data point when you historically win off of defense and not a high scoring offense. On paper CP is easily a double digit underdog. Just saying don’t be surprised if they played Jeff and the Bulldog D forced Jeff to play Crown Point’s game.

Jeff will hang 45 on them and call it a night. Highest scoring 6a team by 14 points. And yes I know their schedule isn’t as tough as a lot of 6a but their starters haven’t played a second past halftime in the last 3 games.

Yikes, Merrillville, a team with size and speed, has no shot against Jeff? Don’t overlook Crown Point in Sectional 1 either. They have a knack for lulling teams to sleep in 20-14 type games and finding ways to win.

Crown Point just beat 1-6 Laporte 21-10 they are not a threat. Merrillville will be a challenge but we will just have to wait and see

I hope you are right on all accounts, I really do. I hope Jeff makes it to the Oil Can and makes me eat my original post. I like what they are doing at Jeff. That staff is building a respectable program made up of respectable leaders and respectable young men. I hope in the near future I see them playing after Thanksgiving.

Do you know exactly what happened to their QB?

Just a bruised knee from what I read on J&C. Probably just holding him out to be safe. The backup QB starts at TE but he is solid too. Threw for 370 yards last game

You’re out of your mind if you think Warsaw is beating Jeff.. I don’t see them having any trouble until they get to regionals where Homestead or Carmel will likely be waiting. Jeff has 2 D1 dlineman, WR committed to Army with a stud QB and RB. Jeff’s QB is only supposed to be out 2 weeks. People forget Jeff was up 14-0 on carmel last year before they kind of fell apart. This team is much better than last years

    Semi state not regionals

My revised picks as the season has unfolded are as the following

    6A: Avon over Warsaw, 42-24

    - I'm still in love with the local giant Lafayette Jeff, but I don't see them getting past a good Warsaw team. Avon is playing some of the best football in 6A right now, will be a tough out for anyone

5A: Valpo over New Pal, 35-31

    - I flipped a coin between New Pal and Cathedral. New Pal won best 3 out of 5. Valpo seems to be the best team in 5A, and will beat any and all takers

4A: Marian over East Central, 24-14

    - I honestly think Marian is the best team in 4A, will think that until a team beats them in the post season

3A: Chatard over Brownstown Central, 41-21

    - I just want to see May make it to the Oil Can, and Brownstown seems to have the team to get it done

2A: Eastbrook over Linton Stockton, 21-20

    - Linton might be a reach, but I like what they are doing. I want to see all the hard work Adamson has put into his career at Eastbrook come to fruition, and what better season to do it then when nobody is picking you?

    1A: Lutheran over Southwood, 28-22

    - 4 straight trips to semi-state should finally get this Lutheran team over the hump. Southwood seems to be a dark horse, and might be the North's best chance at beating South Adams for a spot in the Oil Can
