@Fkfootball and @swcgillespie didn’t submit picks last week. Are you guys in this week or are you throwing in the towel?

Week 6 Predictions Bedford North Lawrence (2-3, 2-1 HHC) at Jennings County (1-4, 0-2 HHC): The Stars lead the all-time series 42-7 and have won five straight meetings. This Panthers team is pretty bad and there really isn’t much more to say here. BNL wins. Columbus East (3-2, 3-0 HHC) at Floyd Central (2-3, 1-1 HHC): The Olympians lead the all-time series 31-15 and have won 19 straight meetings. I believe the Highlanders have the potential to win this game but that depends on the effectiveness of the Columbus East offense. Even during their bad year last year, East still put up 28 on Floyd Central which was their lowest scoring output during the 19 game series win streak. Matter of fact, East has never lost a game against Floyd Central when it has scored 16 or more points. This might be a lower scoring game than in years past but I’ll take East anyway. New Albany (1-4) at Bloomington North (2-3): The Cougars lead the series 5-3 and have won the last three meetings. The Bulldogs have given up 34 or more points in every game except their win against Jennings County in which they gave up 21. Enter a Bloomington North team that put up 55 last week at Terre Haute North. The Cougars have the firepower and the Bulldogs don’t have the…dogs…to stop them. Therefore, BHSN wins big. Seymour (3-2) at Brownstown Central (4-1): The Jackson Bowl has been a great rivalry and a huge deal for the people of Jackson County. At one time, the Owls had a 7-0 lead in the series. However, despite the big size disparity, the Braves won 9 out of the next 14. Brownstown trails in the series 12-9 but has won the last three games. Can their seniors complete the four year sweep? With the offensive scheme the Braves run, it’s very possible. However, Seymour has quite a bit of talent and experience to make up for it. Seymour is my pick. Silver Creek (3-2) at Jeffersonville (0-4): After an 80 year hiatus, the two teams met again last year with the Red Devils winning to tie the series 1-1. Both games were decided by eight points or fewer and it wouldn’t shock me if that was the case again. To me, this is the toughest game to pick this week. It all depends on which Jeff team shows up. Both of these teams played Floyd Central tough but both lost by 14. Can Jeff finally get in the win column? I’m not too confident which is why I’m picking the Dragons to win.

Big Kendall Wildey fan but some people around these parts aren’t too high on him. I’ll leave it at that.

I don’t think I conveyed my point very well so I apologize. I wasn’t saying ALL of Jennings County athletics is full of a losing culture. Kristi Sigler’s teams from her playing days were very successful and she was able to take what she learned at IU as well to help bring success to the girls basketball team. I don’t know much about track and cross country other than both teams have been winning sectionals. I know Bill Ludwig was able to find success by consistently winning sectionals prior to retirement. And Lord knows I wasn’t calling the wrestling program a losing culture. Yeah, they’ve hit some hard times over the last few years but Jim Harr and Howard Jones were anything but losers. And even if they were, I wouldn’t say it to Howard’s face. Considering he took down a deer with his bare hands while in his early 60s, I don’t think he’d have much trouble with me. When it comes to football (or any sport with a less than stellar history), I’m not against “hiring from within” if a particular coach has a background in the sport that doesn’t just include losing at Jennings County. For example, Justun Sharp played at Jennings County but he also spent time on other coaching staffs. I’m sure he learned a few things while with Cathedral, for instance. I was a fan of his hiring because he’d been a part of a winning culture elsewhere. Hopefully I did a better job of explaining. If you want to poke holes in my argument then feel free to educate me.

Depends on the situation but doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result is insanity. Then again, the true motivation may not be changing a culture. It may just be that you’re cheap. Or it may be that you play politics in order to keep certain people happy.

Yeah he’s a great guy and I’ve been a fan of his since day one. He’s the first guy there in awhile that I feel truly wants to change the culture. I really like how he hasn’t been afraid to challenge the status quo and bring outsiders in. When you’re known for losing, it doesn’t make much sense to bring insiders in. More often than not, if Jennings County athletics is all they know then they’re just going to come in and continue the losing.

Week 6 games

Yeah I don’t doubt that. My comment was in regards to how the team has looked so far this year. As bad as Madison had been the first four weeks of the season, Jennings County looked worse and that’s why I went with Madison in that game. I know they’ve been battling some significant injury issues as well.

Week 5 Picks Columbus East (2-2, 2-0 HHC) at New Albany (1-3, 1-1 HHC): This is the only game this week in which the series is not extremely tight. The Olympians hold a 25-6 advantage but it was the Bulldogs that snapped a 19 game losing streak to East last year. East was able to avenge their loss against the team that ended their HHC winning streak (Seymour). Now they get the team that ended their HHC championship streak at 17 years. Based on what we’ve seen out of New Albany so far this year, they may be in for a rough night. East wins. Jeffersonville (0-3, 0-2 HHC) at Floyd Central (1-3, 0-1 HHC): The Red Devils had an embarrassing loss last week which, based on how close they were to beating Seymour and BNL in their first two games, seems to be a sign of a lack of heart/effort. If they don’t get mentally tough then they’ll be feasted on by a Highlander team coming off their own late game choke-job against Seymour. Jeff leads the all-time series 27-24 but Floyd Central has won 10 out of the last 11. I think the Highlanders keep the streak going and get the W. Jennings County (1-3) at Madison (1-3): The 59th edition of the Railroad Rivalry takes place tonight and what a rivalry it has been. The Panthers lead the series 31-27 but recent history is not on their side. The home team has won the last ten games in the series. Add in the fact Jennings County lost to South Dearborn 28-0 in week 1 while Madison lost to South Dearborn 15-12 in week 2 and even the transitive property isn’t on their side. Based on these factors, I’m thinking the home team winning streak extends to 11. The Cubs are my pick. Seymour (2-2, 2-1 HHC) at Bedford North Lawrence (2-2, 2-0 HHC): We have another close series here as the Owls lead this one 24-23. Seven out of the last eight games in this series have been decided by eight points or less. Contrary to the Jennings County and Madison series, the recent history in this one favors the road team as the home team has taken the loss in the last four games. The Stars have gotten off to some slow starts the last couple weeks against HHC teams and this is not the week to continue that. Once again, I think recent history continues as Seymour is just too talented and experienced. Seymour wins.

😳 You’ve got my attention. I graduated with Drew Kiel. I remember all the hype he and my other classmates got in middle school as they went unbeaten in 7th and 8th grade. If Highland Hills is comparable then that’s definitely something to take note of.

Yeah the Jennings County offensive line got stood up or pushed back pretty much every snap. That’s been the case a lot over the years. East isn’t as big as they used to be. We got shoved around by Whiteland and Columbus North this year. I’m guessing they took out their frustrations last night. Hopefully Jennings County can get some size and strength on their lines but I think they need a head coach that is willing to be there for the long haul to ensure that happens.

Yeah I was there. It was pretty bad. 69 total yards to 400 by East. 5 first downs to 22 by East. 3 turnovers to 0 by East.

You’ve got nothing to apologize about. I just don’t think Jeff showed up. Unless Seymour is somehow really bad, you don’t go from nearly beating them to getting completely demolished by Mount Vernon. That’s an effort issue. Maybe blowing leads late in their first two games took all the wind out of their sails. It shouldn’t but, then again, Jeffersonville hasn’t been the most disciplined team in the HHC.

Mount Vernon (Posey) beat Jeffersonville tonight 48-0. Yikes. I missed badly on that game.

Week 4 Picks Bedford North Lawrence (1-2, 1-0 HHC) at New Albany (1-2, 1-0 HHC): This has been a tight series with BNL leading 23-21. The Stars looked rough for most of last week’s game with Jeffersonville but made a heck of a comeback at the end to win. On the other hand, the Bulldogs don’t impress me. Their losses weren’t close and their six point win at Jennings County isn’t great. BNL is my pick. Floyd Central (1-2, 0-0 HHC) at Seymour (1-2, 1-1 HHC): Another tight series here as the Owls lead it 14-12. Seymour won 11 out of the first 14 games but, ever since 2009, the Highlanders are 9-3. Both teams have key injuries but I feel like Floyd Central has the better win (Silver Creek as opposed to Jeffersonville). For that, I’m picking the Highlanders. Jennings County (1-2, 0-1 HHC) at Columbus East (1-2, 1-0 HHC): We go from two tight series to this one. Columbus East leads it 44-7 and has won the last 24. The average score in those 24 games? 46-9. The Panthers have been shut out in three of the last five games and haven’t put up more than a touchdown on the Olympians since 2013. I don’t see much changing this year, even with East not being that great. East wins big. Mount Vernon (Posey) (2-1) at Jeffersonville (0-2): These teams met for the first time ever last year, a 35-13 win for the Wildcats. I keep going back and forth in my head over which team I’ll pick. The Red Devils have let their first two games slip from their grasp late, but Mount Vernon has played a really weak schedule. Their two wins are against teams that are a combined 1-5. I might regret this but I feel like Jeff will come in with a chip on their shoulder and finally close out a game. Plus I think they’ll be the fresher team due to not having to take a near two and a half hour bus ride. I’ll go with Jeffersonville.
