Looks like WHME and likely other PBS channels in the state, will no longer be able to broadcast the State Finals for any high school sports. Disappointing for TV viewers, loved watching the football and basketball finals every year on TV

Unfortunately, WHME TV-46 no longer has the rights to show IHSAA State Finals in any sport. The IHSAA has sold those rights exclusively to Bally Sports. Viewers in our area have to use the Bally Sports Plus app or http://IHSAAtv.org to view IHSAA State Finals contests. (1/2)

Ah, for the days when everything from basketball sectional championship games through the Semi State and Final 4 games were televised on free television.

I believe the Attucks game was a scheduled Roncalli home game, but Shortridge was a designated road game that Shortridge agreed to move to Roncalli.

I had read that both IPS schools were scheduled for home games, but neither one had the appropriate stadium to host. Even at that, it doesn't seem right that Roncalli gets four straight at home, being that New Pal has already played one tournament game on the road.

A not-so-massive HCC update from Beaver (aka Miller) Stadium: Zville’s second string scores on Nville’s third/unclassified string.

    35-10, Noblesville. Final

For the sake of relativity, the last time the Millers dominated an opponent like they did tonight, one would have to go back to 2017, when they beat HH 45-0; but an in-conference domination like they displayed tonight goes all the way back to 2014. 😮 Tonight’s game being a not-insignificant reversal of a 39-7 drubbing mere weeks ago. Hats off 🎓to coach prep + physical/mental conditioning of the players.

Edit: this comment doesn’t belong here, but I’ll throw the 🥊 down anyway: the HCC is the preeminent football conference in IN.

I heard that Z'Ville was racked by injuries the past month. Is this true? They got off to a 4-1 start, the only loss a close one at Westfield.

As for the HCC, I agree. Five of the eight HCC teams won tonight over non conference opponents. FC barely lost to CG. he other two, Noblesville and Z'Ville played each other. Meanwhile, Carmel and Ben Davis both lost big.

My wife used to teach at CA and one section of the concrete beaches was not safe.  Looked like they were going to fall down.   Though one would think they could play at Tech.   Pretty nice facilities from what I heard.

Back 10 years ago when Indy hosted the Super Bowl, the NFL put money into Tech's stadium. I think that is something they do in every SB  host city.

This bracket is about one team and one team only.

    The Favorite:

Lutheran - The Saints have passed every test thrown at them as they attempt to defend their crown from 2021.  Only one win in single digits and two within two possessions.  I have a feeling they may be able to name their score Thanksgiving weekend.

    The Contenders:  (Sorted alphabetically.)

Adams Central - The Flying Jets are looking to get another crack and Lutheran and would be undefeated if they do so.  A nice win over an Eastside squad whom I have a lot of respect for is their signature victory.  We will see if they can get back and finish the job this time.

North Judson - The Blue Jays enter the tournament a t 8-1 and have solid shutout win over a good Knox squad on their resume.  They did fall to 2A LaVille in OT in week 8 which is nothing to be ashamed of.

    The Sleepers:  (Sorted alphabetically.)

North Decatur - A tough one out of the gate for the Chargers as they travel to Tri.  Should they get by that one, the regional shapes up nicely before Lutheran likely awaits in the semi-state.

South Putnam - The Eagles get much respect from this guy for taking on all comers.  After traveling to Indy to test their mettle against a quality Heritage Christian unit, they also took on a great 2A squad in Linton to close out the season.  They will be tested right out of the gate as they travel back to Indy, where Lutheran awaits.

    Temp's Picks:

    Sectional Champs:

    North Judson

    Park Tudor

    Carroll (Flora)

    Adams Central

    Sheridan

    North Decatur

    Lutheran

    Providence

    Regional Champs:

    North Judson

    Adams Central

    North Decatur

    Lutheran

    Semi-State Champs:

    Adams Central

    Lutheran

    State Champions:  Lutheran

    What say you?

I say if one could bet on high school football, I'd throw down my entire retirement $ on Lutheran :)

Also, does Shortridge still get credit for hosting that game because that could affect where Roncalli has to play in future more important contests if not…

Ummm, looks like few if any bleachers! I also remember a game that was supposed to be there a few years ago that had to be cancelled when the assigned officials did not show up. I remember a Westfield/Scecina tournament game years ago where Scecina played at Howe High School's field. There were only bleachers on the home team side, so fans of both schools sat on the same side. Westfield's bench was still on the other side. It was odd seeing them over there by themselves.

As for your question, that was sort of mine. I would think that were the game was actually played would be what counts. You are right that this could affect Roncalli's home team status down the road.

They were in 1A in the 80’s along with HSE and Lawrenceburg.

They and HSE may be the only two schools that have played in all 6 classes. Westfield played in the 1A tournament prior to the current "all in" format, and were 2A runner up to FW Luers in 1992. I don't believe they ever won a 3A or 4A sectional, but they were not in either one of those classes for very long.

Found the rules.  Looks like at Regionals odd sectional hosts if both teams hosted sectional finals.  Seems to favor Roncalli in New Pal match up, if both play away the first two weekends.

Roncalli's blowout of Shortridge was supposed to be a Shortridge home game. However, it was moved to Roncalli. Not sure the reason. Supposedly the same will happen next week when they play Attucks.

What the hell is New Pal putting in their water?  I don't think I've seen a 6A line this big.

Back in week one, when Westfield played them at their place, the announcers said the same thing. I know Westfield coach Jake Gilbert said that prior to last week, they were 5-3 with all three losses coming to undefeated teams, New Pal, HSE, and Brownsburg. He mentioned that  New Pal was the best of those teams.  Guess we'll never know for sure.

  10. HCC final scores:

HCC game of the week: HSE 31, Brownsburg 28  HSE finishes 9-0, HCC champs. Probably will be the new #! in 6A this next week.

Noblesville 43, Avon 41.  Defensive struggle LOL

Westfield 24, Franklin Central 13  Westfield scored 21 first quarter points, and only added a  3rd quarter 44 yard field goal with last night's wind that looked good from 60. Offensive woes or just better defensive adjustments by FC? QB Cole Ballard left the game in the 3rd quarter and never returned. Not sure, but he was standing without helmet, being talked to by several trainers. Possible concussion? He did put on his helmet and joined his teammates on the sideline, but never reentered the game.

Fishers 37, Zionsville 7  What has happened to the Eagles? After a 4-1 start, their last four games have all been losses, two blowouts and a 18 point loss to HSE among these.

    3 thoughts about programs qualifying:

    1) A lot of teams would do their best to avoid any competition during the regular season. Who would want to play "independent" teams like Cathedral, Center Grove or Carmel? MIC and HCC schools already have a difficult schedule. On top of that, how many teams would want to bail their conference?

    2) Programs would have to pick between money and increasing their odds to make the playoffs. If I'm Columbus North, I can schedule Perry Meridian or Cathedral. One gives me better odds to make the playoffs, but it cost our school money. This also goes for struggling programs that actually need the money.

    3) What happens to teams like Zionsville the past two years? I assume 4 win teams won't make the cut.

Keep everything the way it is. Water will find it's level one way or another.

The last thing needed is something like the old Cluster System to determine playoff teams. That was more of a cluster ****

I think you are being a bit too kind to Avon.

    F C  41

    Avon  21

Brownsburg is indeed a "Top 4" team in the state.  They will play like it.

    Bulldogs  31

    Fishers     17

HSE had Westfield beat in Sectionals last year only to give up a last minute drive and a game winning FG. I think HSE will be ready and the Rocks just aren't the dynamic team this year.

    Royals  24

    Rocks   20

Zionsville will survive at home with their defense.

    Eagles  27

    Millers   20

You almost had the Westfield/HSE score dead on. This loss was purely on Westfield. Too many penalties again. This is the most undisciplined Jake Gilbert team I've seen. Five of those penalties were personal fouls. Still, If Westfield doesn't gift HSE 17 points, they win this one. It was not a good night for QB Cole Ballard. Three turnovers. The first, a backward pass on the first play of the game, where it looked like Westfield was coming out with a halfback option pass. Unfortunately, the initial pass by Ballard hit the ground well in front of the back, and HSE recovered at the Westfield 10. That's 7 points. Early second half, Westfield on their own end, Ballard throws a pass right to an HSE defensive back, who runs it down to Westfield's eight yard line. They hold, but HSE still gets another gifted three points. Finally, after Westfield went from 14 down to just 7 down, they got a defensive stop, and got the ball back and had a chance to take their first lead of the game, Ballard, under pressure at his 40, throws a short pass that goes right to an HSE defender, who had a clear 45 yard path to the end zone. Two point conversion failed, so Westfield trails by 13. Westfield comes right back and scores again with about 1:20 to go and has all timeouts, so now down just 6. The onside kick fails and HSE runs out the clock.

Tough one this Friday at Brownsburg, who may have the best team in 6A. I still say that New Pal is the best team Westfield has faced. That's no knock on HSE. New Pal is that good.

Here we go.  Time to look silly on Saturday morning once again.

Hamilton Southeastern @ Avon:  Two programs heading in opposite directions.  HSE has its sights set on dethroning Westfield en route to the conference title, while Avon is looking to get out of the conference cellar.  This one may stay close early but HSE pulls away late.  Royals win 34-21.

Brownsburg @ Franklin Central:  It would be just like Brownsburg to be the story heard round the state after a big win and lay an egg the next week.  FC's offense never got off the bus last week against Roncalli.  A letdown for the Bulldogs?  Nah, but closer than most think.  Brownsburg wins 27-17.

Noblesville @ Fishers:  The Millers gained some legitimacy last week with an out of state win, while Fishers improved to 2-0 and wants to join its rival in the conference title talk.  Two teams with lots of promise and fighting for the upper tier of the conference.  I will take the home team in a nail biter, 23-20.

Zionsville @ Westfield:  An easy win for the Eagles and a bounce back win for Westfield.  That New Pal loss is and will continue to look better week by week and the Shamrocks have owned this conference for the last two falls.  I expect that to continue with a win over Zionsville, 27-14.

    What say you?

Westfield still has work to do.  As against New Pal, too many mistakes against LC. Five personal foul penalties, two penalties for not getting a defensive player off of the field in time. Three turnovers, two of which were great throws from Cole Ballard that the receiver simply allowed to deflect off their hands and be intercepted. Still, there offensive was nearly unstoppable when they didn't stop themselves with the above. So they got the two TD win against LC.

Zionsville will be a tough game for them.

I'm talking about kids who jump to 3 or 4 schools in their 4 year career. We're heading that direction, already seeing it on the hardwood. I understand a kid transferring after their freshman year being in an overwhelmed situation, but you're now seeing kids transfer every year. That's not healthy in my opinion.

It happens in Marion County in basketball.

Westfield didn't see the discipline that New Pal has at the Jamboree. Ben Davis and Carmel had "dawgs" but what New Pal lacks in talent, they usually make up with in consistency. This game might look different if in October. Best of luck to both teams moving forward this season!

Thanks, but again, just a comedy of errors. Westfield was lucky to have only lost by 14.  First play of the second half, a bad exchange between the QB and running back results in a fumble at the New Pall 22.  Three plays later, New Pal is up 21. Westfield comes back to make a two score game, recovers an onside kick, has it down inside the 10 on 4th down, about a minute to go with a time out left, and the QB clocks the ball!  Westfield had four drives go inside the New Pal 30 without scoring. They only punted one time. Now they do have a bunchh of new guys, but still. Their defense looked to be their strong suit early in the season, but they got burnt time and again by the New Pal offense.  Next week won't be any easier as they host a much improved Lawrence Central team.

    New Palestine - 21

    Westfield - 7

    Halftime

Halftine - Westfield looks totally unprepared, which just doesn't happen to a Jake Gilbert coached team.  Deep in New Pal territory, they get a snap to the QB on 4th and one that the QB Ballard wasn't ready for. Turn over on downs. Two straight passes on another possession in New Pal territory, wide open receivers, both passes were overthrown. Then after a 95 yard kickoff return when it was 14-0 makes it 14-7, New Pal late in the half pulled off a fake punt just inside of Westfield territory that went for a TD. You have to be alert for a fake punt in that situation. Westfield was apparently not ready for it. Finally, with little time left, Westfield hits a long pass inside New Pal's 10. The short field goal attempt was no good because the snap didn't get back to the holder. Just a comedy of errors by Westfield so far. For some reason, their latest Mr. Do Everything, Purdue recruit Dillon Theniman, has not played a down in this game. He did play in last Friday's Carmel/Ben Davis scrimmage. No reason was given why he hasn't player. New Pal looks as good as advertised. Westfield needs to go back to the drawing board.

Bumping as we're now at Game 1 of the 2022 season. Lots of intriguing matchups in the league this week. Only two matchups with NCC schools, when there used to be so many, the first two weeks might as well have been the HHC-NCC challenge (which the HHC dominated every year).

    To follow

Westfield at New Palestine: NewPalRadio.com, 107.5 The Fan & IHSAAtv.org/NewPalestine

Greenfield-Central at Plainfield: WRGF-89.7 (available on TuneIn)

    Greensburg at Shelbyville: WSVX-1520 (giant.fm)

New Castle at Franklin County: WLTI-1550 (no webcast)

Pendleton Heights at Lebanon: WEEM-91.7 (link)

Delta at Muncie Central: WXFN-1340 (WXFN.com), video webcast on IHSAAtv.org

    Yorktown at Anderson: WHBU-1240 (1240whbu.com)

Mt. Vernon at Noblesville: Looks like it will be on IHSAAtv.org via Hamilton County TV

Is NewPalRadio.com only audio? The IHSAA TV link also points to this site, so no video streaming of this game?

Obviously this is a football centric board, but people are aware that football is very, very far away from the issues that drove this outcome, aren’t they?

If football was the only parameter I think CG and Carmel are unanimously accepted.  From everyone I’ve talked to this was driven by the impact adding Carmel to the conference championship mix in non revenue sports.  Especially those that already see Carmel in sectionals.  I understand that argument.  I think a lot of people do, even if they feel Carmel and CG should have been admitted.

I wasn’t in the meeting.  I don’t vote.  But I’ve had conversations with coaches at multiple schools, and a couple administrators.  ALL of them mention this as the big issue.

My 2 cents, likely worth about that much🤣

I totally agree.. Back when Carmel and CG were booted out of the MIC, someone on this board posted that these two schools combined to win almost all of the MIC titles in both boys and girls sports in the last full school year. I''m sure that was a big influence in this decision.

Both schools will have the last laugh winning the 6A title as an independent instead of the HCC. How much gate revenue are HCC members potentially missing out on not including the two most prolific and visible athletic profiles in the state?

Pretty wild that the three best football programs in the state now have no conference affiliation. Wonder if this will spark a new trend going forward?

The HCC brings in plenty of revenue as it is. Even the smallest school, Zionsville, with about 2,200 enrollment, packs them in for home football games. I have driven by the Carmel stadium which is right off of Keystone and seen plenty of empty seats for their home football games. The HCC is big enough now that they don't really need other schools to boost their attendance.

  20. One thing that I have not seen discussed here is possible scheduling of this new 10 team HCC. In the beginning, it was nine teams, with the current teams minus Franklin Central plus Lafayette Harrison and McCutcheon. Then Lafayette Jeff was added, making it a 10 team league. The football coaches and ADs never liked the fact that playing the other 9 teams meant no non conference games. That, plus the travel involved, eventually ended in the three Lafayette schools out. If that same thinking holds true today, the HCC, if it goes back to 10 schools, would have to either go back to playing no non conference games, or perhaps forming two divisions, five teams each, playing the other four division teams plus a couple from the other division, with the two division winners playing in week 9. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
