In what has to be the wildest game of the night, Westfield wins at Lawrence Central 59-58 in 2 OTs.

Too many highlights. Neither team could stop the other for most of the game.

After Westfield took a 44-43 lead with just over 2 minutes to play, LC with a quick score and two point conversion to take a 51-44 lead Westfield looked to be looking at the loss, down to a 4th and 10 with little time left. However, they get the first down, down to the LC 3, then score on the last play of regulation. The PAT ties the game 51-51. I was surprised Coach Gilbert didn't go for two at that point, since both teams had to be gassed.  There were numerous injury timeouts for cramps by both teams throughout the game.

LC scored on their first play in OT. The PAT made it 58-51 LC  Westfield had a 4th and goal, got it in, this time went for the two point conversion. Got that, and  59-58 victory.

    Phew!

    CORRECTION:  Just one overtime

I still remember those days whenever I drive by whatever CYO Field is called today.  That game in that picture must have been an out of town school, or a non Cathedral game.  That must be a CYO jamboree picture on second thought.

I also played CYO ball my 8th grade year on that field.  It was hard!  I caught a pass for about a 3 yard gain that day.

My senior year, we had a game where the lights on the north end of the stadium went out just before kickoff. The decision was made to play the entire game on the south end.

8-0 last week...lets see if we can keep it going.

Avon @ Ben Davis:  Avon hung tough with a solid LN outfit at home last week but came up short whereas BD made the statement of the early season in throttling one of Ohio's best.  Giants may be due for a let down and I expect a bit of a slow start before they begin to roll.  BD wins 42-17.

Fishers @ Pike:  A second straight blowout likely for Fishers as they get the "other" MIC bottom feeder, albeit an improved Pike squad.  The Red Devils will rely heavily on the home field to keep this one close, but I just don't see it.  Tigers roll 38-13.

Hamilton Southeastern @ North Central:  Royals got revenge on their homefield last week avenging 2022's semi-state loss to Carroll.  They'll breathe easier this week as the work in progress that is NC awaits.  Royals win 49-7.

Homestead @ Noblesville:  An interesting matchup of two often overlooked squads in their respective geographic regions of the state.  Spartans earned a moral victory last week with a close loss to Carmel and are out to prove they haven't taken a step back.  Noblesville trying to prove is annual August success is not a fluke this time.  I'll take the home team 27-20.

Indianapolis Cathedral @ Brownsburg:  Best game in the state this weekend in my opinion and both coming off blowout wins.  The traditional power against the upstart squad who hasn't won one in over 30 years.  Were this an October/postseason game I would take the Irish but it always seems like the Bulldogs get up for an early season contest which raises expectations.  'Dogs win this one 27-24.

Indianapolis Roncalli @ Franklin Central:  Franklin Central's time is NOW.  Booming enrollment, solid facilities, and an investment in the football program we have not seen since the 80s.  This is an underrated "rivalry" on the southeast side of Indianapolis as many families have folks on both sides of this one.  I think the Flashes pull a mild upset here.  20-17.

Westfield @ Lawrence Central:  An underrated game on the schedule and two teams coming off blowout wins and looking to get into the state title discussion.  I could see this one going either way and am going to take the easy way out and take the home team by 3 in what could also be viewed as a mild upset.  Bears win 30-27.

Zionsville @ Lebanon:  Lebanon is growing but is not quite ready for the prime time that awaits.  Zionsville gets a breather here after a nail biting win at home last week against Pike.  Eagles win comfortably 37-14.

    What say you?

Except for your Westfield vs LC pick, I totally agree  Of course I have to go with my Shamrocks, but agree that this game is a toss up.

    1) The time is the time. I don't have the time to complain about time zones. That's something above my pay grade.

    2) I'd really be shocked if most games aren't pushed back an hour or so if it's going to continue to be extremely hot on Friday.

Central Indiana is forecasting 88 degrees for a high on Friday, so not much lower than that at 7 pm. Forecasting 82 for a high on Saturday but chance of storms in the morning.

In the late 1950's and early 1960's, when I went to school, our games started at 8PM, but you had to be at CYO Field by 6PM to get a seat at most games.  I realize that's back in the dark ages, but we were on Central Time, here in Indianapolis, at that time also.  It was a lot more civilized, imho.

I was at Cathedral mid to late 60's.  Yea, if you wanted a seat at CYO, you'd better get there early. I do remember the 8 pm start times. I'm not sure when or why they decided to start at 7 pm. Of course, real grass, not the hotter field turf back in "ancient times" :)

  7. Westfield 34

    New Pal   14

Westfield dominated from the start, holding the Dragons to a 3 and out, blocking the punt, and going in for the TD four plays later. Next play, Westfield intercepts the New Pal pass, and several plays later, it's 14-0. Westfield will miss a field goal, but connect on another to make it 17-0. After a Westfield punt is downed at the one yard line, New Pal fumbles in the end zone, Westfield recovers to make it 24-0. That was the halftime score.

First drive of the second half, Westfield marches down the field to make it 31-0.  Possible running clock coming up. However, Westfield puts in their backups for the remainder of the game, New Pal scores their two TDs in between another Westfield field goal, to make the final 34-14.

JB is a legend around Indy.  He originally was a DJ at WIRE radio 1430 am in the '60's.  Then he was the 1st radio voice of the Pacers.  He has called many championship games at every level.  But, he should be put out to pasture.

Actually, Jerry was first a DJ at WIFE radio when they first went on the air, and that was 1963. Jerry is from Sullivan, IN, and often has talked about when he was driving up to Indy for the job, he found out that his DJ name would be Jack Sunday. He has to be closing in on 80 years old, if not already there. Jerry also was the person who introduced The Beatles for their first of two shows during the 1964 Indiana State Fair.

He was hired in 2017 to be the Pacers PA announcer after long time PA guy Reb Porter (another old WIFE DJ) retired. I never was at one of his games, but I heard it didn't go well.  He was replaced the following season.

The link below is about 2 minutes, starting with Jerry's introduction of the group.

@foxbat I’m trying to get my brain wrapped around the SF thing so I hope you don’t mind me asking a few questions. Why don’t they treat it like British soccer leagues? Every year move up the two teams that play for the state title (or all 4 semi-state participants if you like) and move down the same corresponding number of teams. At some point all of the teams will trickle up or down to where their program belongs. They could recognize the teams in each class that punched highest above their weight and give them some sort of an award. It would allow them to brag about their program evenn if they don’t win a state title. Also, why is it such a big deal to reseed the teams each year? It seems like something that a few people could do over a weekend. Thanks

Good question. That might work. I do believe that schools can "punch above their weight class" if they so desire. So any school wishing to  could voluntarily move up one class, correct? Maybe that's not the case today, but I do remember a school from the north doing that years ago. I can't remember which, but the move was from 4A to 5A.

Ticketmaster is a giant monopoly that grifts money from patrons, venues, and acts, produces nothing, adds little to no value, and are in general a PITA for everyone involved.

Ticketmaster recently had a BOGO event for some concerts, most of whom a lot of us probably never have heard of. One guy posted that he bought two tickets for one of these shows, so he actually just paid for one ticket for this special event. However, the Ticketmaster total fees were more than the second ticket that he got for free!

It's too bad that the IHSAA has linked up with this organization. Just sell the tickets at the schools like in the past.

No PBS stations aired finals.  WHME was a legacy issue that was curtailed by bally this year.   It has aired on Bally/Fox for the last 9 years.

No, but Fox 59 out of Indy used to have them before Fox Sports Indiana (now Bally). Before that the good old days of Channels 6 and 4 televising these game over the air.

Will all the games be on 93.1 FM WIBC in Indianapolis? I heard there might be a conflict with the Pacers' game?

107.5 The Fan out of Indy had the 2A game on this afternoon. I think they will be carrying all 6 games. If you are out of the Indy area, this station can be found on several online radio services, such as the TuneIn and IHeart Radio's apps.

Not sure what TV provider you have if you have cable… but they stream all state finals games on fox sports, or bally sports now

Bally Sports (formerly Fox Sports Midwest) is available on some cable providers. Comcast has them here. No additional charge. If not, I believe you have to pay to watch their internet app stream. That caused a ruckus prior to this year's Pacer's season, when Bally announced it would be charging $20/month to watch the stream. I don't see where you can pay for just the state finals games as you could the games leading up to this coming weekend.

Was Jalen Alexander one of those injured Royals? He had rushed for well over 200 yards against both Westfield and Fishers in the tournament. He only ran it 7 for 19 total yards in this game. If so, that made a huge difference. Looking at stats, HSE had 20 more passing yards and about a 100 more overall rushing yards. Those numbers alone seem to point to an HSE win. What I could not find were turnovers. I did see Carroll scored a TD on a short field after blocking a HSE punt.

Congrats to Carroll. Although I was hoping for a third straight 6A title game for an HCC school, from the stats, it looked like Carroll's defense won that game. They will have their hands full with a Center Grove team that easily dispatched of Cathedral. Most of their players have been there, done that at LOS. This will be new for the Carroll players.  Oh, and there will be that long bus ride :)

Not at 18, you don't.  Its a built in excuse.

I've had some of my best performances where I traveled 2+ hours and/or gotten little sleep the night before due to anxiety/excitement.

The travel didn't seem to bother Westfield up at Merrillville in 2020. 41-23 Rocks win. Then Homestead goes to Westfield and loses 41-9.  Last year Westfield travels to Carroll and wins going away 37-14. Also last year, it apparently did bother Merrillville in a 48-19 loss.

So this theory must only apply to northern schools traveling south :)

My marathon personal best came on a night where I traveled 3.5 hours, got 3.5 hours of sleep the night before, an lost an hour due to the time change...and I was twice the age of a high school football player at the time.

Curious to what your time was. Mine was 3:41:05 in the 2005 Chicago Marathon. Good enough to get me qualified for the next spring's Boston.

That was floating around but is incorrect.

Their first-round game was drawn to be at Shortridge and was Shortridge's home game. At IPS/Shortridge's request, it was moved to Roncalli due to the better field and larger stands (the visitor's side at Roncalli has more seats than Shortridge's field has at all). Even though the game was moved, it remained a Shortridge home game.

Because Roncalli was the "visiting" team and Attucks the "home" team in the first week of the sectional, Roncalli was the host team for the second round game against Attucks. Some might have interpreted that as an Attucks home game because it was in the bottom bracket and both teams were home the previous week, but Roncalli's game was a designated road game. Attucks plays its home games at the old Northwest HS, which has an old facility but is adequate for this level of game.

Even if New Pal had played a road game, regional and semistate host is only based on who was home/away the previous round - both teams were home, and the odd-numbered sectionals have the tiebreaker when that's the case, so Roncalli would have hosted even if its Week 1 game had truly been a home game (there is a caveat for semistate that if one of the teams has not hosted the sectional final or regional, it would host the semistate).

Thanks for the explanation. Surely this is an odd situation. Maybe the IHSAA can do something to prevent it in the future.
