That's interesting. Not very often do you hear just Jefferson, it's Lafayette Jeff. Or Riley, it's South Bend Riley. Evansville Reitz. Indianapolis Ritter. I think when a city has more than one high school, it's common to label them with the city name in front. When there is one high school, it's just named after the ciy..............Warsaw, New Haven, Angola, ect.

I get it, but when you go to Snider High School, it does not say Fort Wayne Snider at the entrance.

I was just looking over the upcoming schedules for our resident NIC teams. Some interesting pick ups for a few schools, and some pick ups that I think were made out of desperation and lack of availability for others.

Penn: Starts with Valpo (possibly the last game in this series) and Mishawaka...(Penn dumps 6A rival Carmel for 4A crosstown rival)

Elkhart: Making a plea to the NLC?? Please NLC save us from the sinking NIC. Elkhart continues crosstown rivalry with Concord and makes it three years in a row vs Northridge. (since the inception of Elkhart, they have played 1 or 2 NLC teams during the regular season)

Marian: Makes it 5 years in a row against Mishawaka and 4 years in a row vs Culver Academy.

New Prairie: Continues their Historic battle against Evil, LaPorte, dating back to the beginning of time. They also have Goshen for the third year in a row.

Adams: Gets a rematch with Culver Academy and Logansport.

Riley: Is looking to continue their success this season and adding winnable games against Hammond Noll and Fort Wayne Wayne (I think the people naming schools got lazy on that one). We will really get to see how far this program has come with a looming week 3 matchup at Home against Penn.

St. Joe: Is in year 4 with Lakeland and year 2 with Fort Wayne South

Washington: Is also in year 4 with Hammond Central and adds New Albany to their schedule.

No one really went out and grabbed a team that I think is going to prep them for a future run in the Playoffs. Smaller schools playing up a class I think helps them regardless of how good that team is, but still nothing that is going to make you turn your head or be excited about.

To be fair, It is not Fort Wayne Wayne, it is just Wayne. Example, it is not Fort Wayne Snider or Fort Wayne Luers or Fort Wayne Dwenger either

IMO, they need to get 2 indy area teams on schedule every year. If not, Penn and (1) indy school. Warsaw and East Noble are nice, but not sure what they gain from those matchups.

Agree 100%. East Noble and Warsaw do nothing for Snider in terms of preparation for a state title run. In my opinion, beating Warren the way they did last year was the impetus to a state title.

  4. Ok, maybe Decatur Central is the best in the South next year, but I have to be honest and say I was not impressed with them when they played Snider, especially offensively. Defensively, they were good, but 3 plays into the Snider game, I knew they weren’t scoring an offensive touchdown. Valpo, Mishawaka, Warsaw, and Merrillville will be all good out of the North

  5. Ok, I think I got my blood alcohol level down to a .015 which means I am only double the legally drunk level. I still don’t have a totally coherent thought, but Hell, I feel like I fit in around here now… So, it seems my analogy of right wingers was a bit off. I should have just went with the first analogy that popped into my head at the time when I was on my 7th double captain and coke. Of course, I’ll be damned since my lack of current sobriety will allow me to recall whatever the first analogy was. Anyways, for now I will just say the old cronies don’t know what the bleep bleep 🤬 🤬they are doing!!! Carry on…

I can't imagine it's a right or left thing. If I were to guess, I would say a higher percentage of left wingers would be in favor of the blind draw and a higher percentage of right wingers in favor of seeding. Still waiting for Komets to clarify that one. My first thought is that he messed his post up and meant to say left wingers. Stay tuned.

Alright, I am in the middle of a Bahamas cruise and way too much alcohol so I guess I rattled some cages with my “right wing” comment. I am way too lit to even try and have a normal conversation and the ball and chain is chewing my tail for even being on the “Net”. If the old cronies can’t figure out that it is best to seed the tourney then there is no hope going forward to have a good tournament.  Seeing the best 2 teams playing in the first round is ludicrous. When I sober up in a few days, I will send BTF a PM and tell him where my right wing comment came from. At this point, I ain’t sure…🍺🍺🍺

Was the FG made to win the Mishawaka game the longest FG in Snider history, do those records exist?

I don’t think so, we have had some kickers who have made 50 yard field goals. I believe there was a kicker with the last name of Lee who did it. Certainly, it was the most clutch field goal kick in Panther history

I'm not trying to be a smartass here. Snider had 52 points scored on them in the postseason. I assume you are saying backups were in for the other scores, or were the other touchdowns defensive scores and special teams by the other team? If so, that's a lot of points the offense/special teams is giving to the other team.

North Side and Anderson scored on backups long after the game was decided. Mishawaka scored 18 points of which 2 were on long plays. Merrillville was dominated by the Snider defense and Decatur Central did nothing vs. that defense. I said it when the playoffs started, Mishawaka was going to be Snider’s toughest game and it was. That offense when you see it once every few years is tough to deal with

For the record, they return 3 of their top 4 tacklers, and 20 of their 27 interceptions. They have two DB's with D1 offers. Should be pretty solid on that side of the ball. That defense only allowed two touchdowns in the 2023 post season, both at the hands of Mishawaka.

Minus the leading tackler in Snider history… Look, I think the Panther defense will be really good if the defensive line plays well, but you don’t replace a Rohrbacher with just anyone. I think Carroll will be improved in 2024 and will put up points. My big question for Snider is offense. Don’t see how it will be better this year. If that is the case, the defense will have to be even better than last year

From the look of the schedule Warren is the big test again, Carroll I expect to be better than last season. If your D is as strong as last year I think Snider is one of a handful of undefeated teams going into the playoffs.

Don’t think the defense will be as strong next year, but they will be good.

I'll never understand a move like this, but that's just me. To each their own. Reminds me of when Rich Rodriguez had the world at his finger tips when he was at West Virginia. It was all downhill from there. DeBoer is pretty revered in Washington and the move to the Big Ten was pretty exciting for their program. Again, to each their own.

I agree with you. DeBoer will not succeed at Alabama and he will be run out of town in 2-3 years and wish he had stayed at Washington.

Regarding relegation and promotion, the model you reference from the EPL is a professional league.  Where would a team be relegated to?  FBS to FCS? FCS to Div II?  Power 5 to a mid-major conference?  Such a model would destroy conferences and the conferences are for sports beyond football. Curious as to your thoughts.

Regarding the teams that are currently relevant...doesn't that in many cases change over time?  How many years prior had Georgia won a national championship prior to them winning a couple of years ago?  Alabama was on a drought before hiring Saban.  Washington hadn't been at this level in a long time before DeBoar.

No bowl games?  So mid-majors are just out of luck?

I agree with you about NIL....or at least what it has evolved to.  I though NIL was to compensate athletes for using their name, image and likeness.  Somehow, its ran to upfront $$ like a contract, regardless if the institution uses their name, image and likeness.  To me, its went way beyond what we were all sold about NIL.

Conferences as currently constituted need to go away. It is beyond ridiculous how the Big 10, which was a Midwest conference, now goes from one end of the United States, Rutgers, to the other end, UCLA and USC. When I say conferences go away, I mean just for football. Football needs to be operated separate from other sports.

As far as relegation works, take the top 25 teams in the country and put them in the top league, take the next 25 teams and they are in a league, and so on. Bottom 5 move down a tier, top 5  in each tier move up. For example, let’s say there are 5 tiers and Indiana is in tier 3, if they finish in the top 5 of tier 3 they would move up to tier 2 next year. If they finish bottom 5 they would move down to tier 4.

As far as bowl games go, 25 teams are in your tier and you can only play 11 of them in a season just matchup the top 8 teams, 1 vs. 2, 3 vs. 4, 5 vs. 6, and 7 vs. 8, and that is their bowl game. Honestly, the bowl games are now about who has the least amount of attrition with players opting out.

NIL has destroyed college football, period. Anyone that doesn’t see it is ignorant to the reality. The transfer portal is a close second in the destruction of college football

  13. I believe Fields is a legitimate starting QB in the NFL and the Bears would be fools to trade him. Build around him, get him an offensive line, give him some weapons at WR and RB and you got yourself a playoff team.

QB Williams is a head case. Major ego for sure. Allegedly wants part ownership of the team drafting him.

Texting some friends this evening, and the convo is about what will happen to college sports going forward. Saban has been a harsh critic of the NIL money and transfer portal. The future picture may have been a driving force for him to step down.

Is the current path sustainable? If it is not sustainable, how long will it last before it falls apart? What are the unintended consequences?

How long will the NCAA survive?

Does it happen at the expense of the non revenue sports?

Anyone here excited about the direction college sports is heading?

What is the impact going to be on HS sports?

I am not confident at all that this is sustainable. I think what Saban sees with the portal is that coaches will have to recruit every scholarship player every year. I have mentioned before, programs like IU and other non competitive programs in the big conferences will just be conduits for programs that do compete.

If a program misses the top 12 in football for a couple years, how difficult does recruiting become?

I think the NCAA or some remnant of it can remain to govern D2 and D3 sports and a handful of DI sports like baseball and hockey. I pick those two because the minor league system for both is well developed and many of the athletes playing those sports are really there to get degrees first. I don't see NIL money impacting those sports much at all, even though they do generate some revenue for schools, and their post season playoffs are pretty popular.

If it does impact the non revenue sports, and I think it will, at what point does Title IX become a factor? The money generated by football and basketball in the past will now go to NIL money instead of sustaining other programs.

My guess is it will quickly fall apart; something like less than 10 years.

Maybe some level of nostalgia will remain; teams will maintain (or pay rights fees to keep) the name of the schools on their uniforms and playing in the college stadiums while being independent from the schools themselves. There are already a number of players in college basketball that may be registered for classes this semester, but are not going to be attending. If I remember right, the Kentucky teams that last won titles had the starting 5 not attending 2nd semester classes. Maybe they were not the first to do that, but it was notable since UK went back to back with 2 completely different starting lineups.

    Other thoughts?

Good topic. Here are some thoughts:

    1. I believe we are headed to a similar format as England soccer, which uses relegation to move teams up and down. The haves and have nots with NIL money playing a huge factor will only make the separation worse

    2. I believe 20-30 teams are now relevant at the highest level, most of which are either in the Big 10 or SEC. Who wants to see Indiana vs Ohio State, Vanderbilt vs. Georgia, etc…

    3. I am of the belief now that the bowl games need to go away other than the 12 teams that qualify to play for a national title. So many players are opting out of playing in a meaningless bowl game, prime example is the Georgia 63-3 shellacking of Florida State. There were other bowl games that were affected as well

    4. I believe the current system will fall apart within 5 years and who knows what will occur going forward. NIL payments are the final coffin in our current system

  15. Washington 37 - Texas 31 final - Another crazy game that I felt Washington controlled throughout yet Texas had chances in the end zone in the final seconds to win it. I thought all along that Texas would not be able to stop Washington’s passing attack, too much speed, and that the Huskies would get just enough stops to win the game.

I see Washington and Texas going way over that number.  Expect a track meet.

If your prediction on the Rose Bowl is correct, I may just take @Bobref up on his offer and spare the board for a few days.

If so I need you to get some quality photos of @Bash Riprock stabbing his Jim Harbaugh voodoo doll.

    Worth the price of admission!!!!
