Does Ohio have reciprocal licenses? I have officiated an Indiana game with one gent who was from OH. I just assumed he originally was from IN and just kept his IN ties.
-
And you bring up a good point. You do not have to sign up for both if you have an afternoon commitment. Just as long as they put it in EventLink as 2 events. Sometimes with MS games they put it in as a single event but list it as a DH.

QB Hard Count - How much move movement is too much?
rob replied to kdets89's question in Officiating Forum
Didn't bring my books with me to work today. What I'd do is start at the back several pages of the rule book where it breaks it down by 5, 10, 15 yard penalties. Find Illegal Procedure and it should jump to the rules covered by that in the manual. I try to review those penalties before a game. I think the foot stomp is a common allowed motion and might be listed there. -
What are your thoughts about double headers? I know they are quite common in the MS events - a 7th grade game followed by an 8th grade game. What about a freshmen game followed by a JV game or vice versa? On a Saturday? Pros: Two games for the same mileage. Cons: Longer day Makes one late to watch/officiate/timekeep that college game later. I am going under the assumption that you are paid for 2 games. Do/would schools pay less per game since you are saving mileage?

Granted I could use that direct link, Anyway I think I have the sort figured out. The first 3 or 4 posts must be "pinned" to appear at the top. Makes sense for most like "Don't be a jerk" kind of stuff. After the first few the sort makes more sense. One of the pinned ones seems out of place. Thank you for your patience.
-
Ok, it's there but the sort is terrible. I tried Start Date and Updated date and neither one seems to be in order. I stopped trying to process that forum and it looked like the most recent posts were from 2022. But that perception was just based on the sorting just not making any sense to me.

What "main forum" are you talking about? The one immediately above this one "The Indiana High School Football Forum" has nothing related to this that I see. Perhaps there is some magic code/sort/etc that I have to pick?

Leo at Columbia City. Leo 18 CC 15. Last down of the game. CC 4th down. CC goes for field goal to tie. Kick is blocked. Leo starts celebrating. CC player picks up the ball and runs it in. However an official had inadvertently whistled the play dead. Do over. CC decides to forego the kick to tie and goes for the win. And does. Leo is madder than a wet hen - their point is that if the play wasn't blown dead they might have stopped the initial goal on the kick try. Right call? Start out at 2:33:00 on this great clear video at

I was looking at open events and I was wondering what this is: Football Officials Meeting #7
-
Also, follow the Boy Scout motto and "Be Prepared". I know of first year refs who ended up becoming the head referee at a subvarsity game. Last MS game I worked the senior guy was only a second year and he became the head referee (his first time), I was the head linesman, and someone on his 4th game was the umpire. And somehow we ended up with only a 3 man crew. Anyways, you can't always hide under the radar.

This is my first year. Register at https://www.ihsaa.org/become-official first. There are three small books from NFHS: Rules book. Case book. Game officials manual. If you have to borrow last years version until you get yours that's fine. Worked for me. Read each cover to cover. I have a long commute and would have loved an audio books version. I borrowed mine from a contact of my assigned mentor (see registration above). Check out: https://www.myihsaa.net/resource-library/d981d75f-a8f9-46ac-73c0-08d9fbbac143 The Officials Handbook is good. It's a lot like the Game officials manual above. See also "Now That I Have Registered - What Do I Do Next". Read this too: https://myihsaa-prod-ams.azurewebsites.net/api/resource-library/categories/ae986c23-f281-4845-0927-08d5f70ac583/documents/91603e36-5fcc-4e6f-670b-08d7de1c7c21/file When you pick an association check the association directory. Make sure they have a few officials in the sport(s) you're doing. I picked my association based on geography only to find out they're mainly a basketball association and didn't have a single training session on football. Keep an eye on https://www.myihsaa.net/events Don't limit yourself to just your association. I went to more than a half dozen clinics, sessions, etc hosted by other associations. Some like in person, some do online. Many are mandatory to get tournament assignments. They are helpful. Events may be dead this time of year but start keeping a close eye late spring/early summer. Don't just search for "football". One great clinic at South Adams forgot to put that in their title. Register at https://officials.eventlink.com/ Make sure you fill out where to put direct deposits, etc Don't consider yourself done until their test direct deposits hit your account. Download their app for your phone. Check it. Don't limit yourself to just games assigned to you. Look also at open assignments. I got most of my bookings this way. Order the uniform. I use https://purchaseofficials.com/ Get: long sleeve shirt, short sleeve shirt, long pants, short pants, whistle and lanyard, velcro down indicator , 2 sided game card, black and blue down bags, penalty flag, mini pencil with plastic shield and clip, smart card game holder with writing pad, black hat, belt (follow their advice and order 1 or 2 sizes bigger to get that through your pants loops I'd go 2 and I'm only a size 38. I've never seen a white hat at a JV/MS game. I've also ordered: cloth chain clip, field shoes, cold hood (which I've yet to use), winter gloves (which I've yet to use), long sleeve mock, short socks and long compression socks If you're ready for a varsity crew contact Kayley Howell at khowell@ihsaa.org She helps crews find members and vice versa. I do not do varsity as I keep busy keeping stats for East Noble varsity games.

EventLink: If you decline a game, can you change your mind?
rob posted a question in Officiating Forum
I had a game not directly assigned to me, it was in Open Assigned instead. I was already booked so I hit decline. Later my booking was cancelled. Is there a way to see if that game still needs officials? I see it in Calendar view, flagged as Declined but it doesn't say whether or not they got it covered. -
"people who reported sports-related concussions had a slightly better cognitive performance than those who reported no concussions, suggesting that the physical and social benefits of sports may outweigh the risk of concussion for amateur athletes." https://www.cbsnews.com/boston/news/concussions-amateur-athletes-cognitive-decline-harvard/

I've seen a HS basketball player hurdle over the announcer behind the table with the clock keeper etc. There was a reason this player was a state qualified high jumper.

Is there a way to check in EventLink who is officiating a game?
rob replied to rob's question in Officiating Forum
I did get word that I was right on. Still, I'd love to be able to check who is officiating a game in case this happens again. -

I was assigned to a game. It was rather confusing. It said it was assigned by one AD with his school's address but was being played at the other schools location. And this was scheduled weeks in advance so it wasn't a weather thing like the fun this last weekend. And they were far enough apart that they don't share a field like Fort Wayne schools sometimes do. Near as I figured that AD messed up and was trying to scheduled officials for an away game. When I asked about it the game was removed from my assignments. So, now I'm curious if I'm right and I'd love to know if the other AD had this covered already. How do I tell if the other school does have officials? I only see assigned, open and accepted. -
Thank you. I could have worked a 5 game set on Saturday for 6th graders (they're still looking). But instead I went for the Unified. Granted starting out on both Unified and regular on my first year with first game being one and second game being another is yet another way to confuse me. My son was a Unified partner and I like working with the crowd.

Does an official require a stopwatch or something?
rob replied to rob's question in Officiating Forum
Thanks, my really cheap watch will work in a pinch. -
Recommended choice: Wednesday 2024-08-28 Get in meeting #6 that date, or do my second career game at a school with only one official currently scheduled? Two days away. As a first year ref, who won't do varsity since I keep stats for EN, the odds of me doing the state tournament this year is slim to none.

Looking for recommended YouTube videos for officiating.
rob replied to rob's question in Officiating Forum
I joined one officials association based solely on geography. I never saw them post a single thing prior to the season at https://www.myihsaa.net/events Now I've heard they are more of a basketball association. I went to all my meetings, clinics, etc at other associations. -
I'm used to watching varsity games where they do a fair job of keeping the clock. I'm new. But what about MS/JV, etc or some small high school. Are you likely to not have a clock? Clock guy didn't show up? Clock guy turns out to be a first grader? What kind of timepiece do you recommend? Is a smart phone ok?

Yeah, I was told that you didn't want the coach mad at the kid for making a bad decision or miscommunicating. Or, blaming his poor decision on the kid.
