  1. For what it's worth (maybe nothing), my take on this game is that even though it's the first round of the Sectionals it almost equates to a state title game cuz both teams probably rightly have that aspiration. As a fan in the stands that night, the frequent delays were frustrating and detracted from the faith in the officials. This forum has helped by explaining the unexpected substitution on the crew. Further, the head ref always seemed to be explaining the call but I never could figure out who he was talking to. He was frequently hitting a button on his collar and/or belt, seemingly to turn on a mic, but nothing. (which it ok...I'm just a fan - as long as the coaches are clued it - but still frustrating/confusing) (Indicentally, during the game, right up until just before the end, I thought the officials were seemingly against Brebeuf.) Now, after watching the replay (thanks to the forum, IHSAA, IndyTV 23), my view about the officiating has changed. The delays make sense - they were adjusting to a new team leader, and getting it right trumps expediency, especially in a game of this caliber. This crew seemed very, not totally of course, precise and conscientious, possibly too much so(??). NOTE: one example that I haven't seen mentioned was the "early celebration" penalty on a 3rd qtr TD run by Brebeuf. (the penalty was actually declined in favor of accepting a holding call) (the ball carrier raised the ball over his head on the 10-yard line on his way to a walk-in touchdown) This call seemed crazy (celebration not overboard at all), but apparently (not sure) NO such activity is allowed while the play is live, and that's the call the official made.
  2. both (maybe the craziest game I've ever seen and couldn't take it all in...had to rewatch at least once, with benefit of announcers input)
  3. Thanks! Seems like in the pros (maybe h.s. different?), they get a "free play" when the defense is off sides, whereas it is blown dead when the offense is.(?)
  4. Thanks, my bad - I was talking about the wrong play AND the other team!
  5. I hear ya, JustRules, but would tend to disagree. The announcer also described the play as you did, but the "catcher", #13, who made a brilliant catch (long throw but not a TD), was the only player split right. The 3 split left appeared to be OK, butg not clearly shown on the screen. The right tackle attacked his man downfield (for some reason), so my guess is that the call was on him, though he was making contact with the defender which I thought (at least in the old days) made it legal for him to be downfield on a pass play, so, overall, either I'm confused/wrong or it was a bad call.
  6. 1. Not sure why Brebeuf had to re-kick the final PAT even though the penalty was apparently (?) on Danville. 2. Throughout the night, the head official seemed to be talking into a mic and hitting buttons to turn it on and off(?). Not sure who he was communicating with or if he thought the crowd or TV audience could hear him, or if there were technical difficulties. (It was kinda frustrating as a fan cuz there were several conferences yet we never really seemed to know what was going on.) 3. Seemed like many (all?) of the refs had ear pieces. Is that something new? Were they communicating amongst themselves?
  7. I went to the game and recall both teams lined up on the 50, ready to proceed with the handshakes, but the handshakes never took place.
  8. (By the way, Boiler Boog, thanks for the link to the broadcast!) I believe this was the play on which the announcers said the call was due to it being run towards the Danville sideline, however I believe one of the receivers DID hold. Earlier in the game, however, I believe a long TD run was called back due to a hold which I thought was just an excellent downfield block by the guy who got flagged.
  9. Not sure why/how it happened, but when I watched this play later on the internet (I was at the game), it appears that for some reason one of the Brebeuf linemen went immediately downfield when the ball was snapped even though it was a pass play.
  10. I believe the announcers explained this on the tv coverage: it is apparently a new rule this year that when the runner goes out of bounds (but his forward progress is not stopped already), they stop the clock UNTIL the ball is positioned and ready for play, then the start the clock back up (ie. not waiting for the snap of the ball).

  12. Seems like on the play that the Brownsburg field goal attempt was blocked, 2 Hamilton SE players were offsides (to the kicking team's left). No ref was on that side . . . seems like he was posted under the goalposts to judge the accuracy of the kick. Bob, in a situation like this, is it up the the side judge on the other side to "police" the whole line of scrimmage? -thx
