I don't really follow the HHC much, just glace time to time because GS picked up New Albany last year and we're hosting them again this year.  Curious to know your thoughts on them taking a step back in 2022.  Loss of a lot of key seniors?  I honestly don't know what their starting roster was made up of in 2021. I do know there were several electric players that could do damage in the open field.

They had upwards of 30 seniors on that team that went to semi-state. Many of them had been starting since they were sophomores. They had a lot invested in that group and it paid off. They will be very inexperienced this year.

  2. Coach Kling was 20-11 in 3 seasons at Triton Central. That's a pretty solid run. It looks like a good hire for Mitchell.

It doesn't appear as though there are any other changes in either conference. Who returns the most? I think I recall that WW was pretty young last year. Could they be the early favorite for the PLAC or does Paoli bring a lot back. SV was good as well. Do they return that talented QB?

Can Brownstown repeat their championship performance? Does SC return enough to challenge Brownstown? That was SC's only loss in the MSC last year. Scottsburg had a nice year last season. Charlestown graduates an All-American at o-line. But they are always tough.

Could this be handled like Wrestling Team Dual State & girls Wrestling? Meaning the tournament & season is ran through the coaches association and not IHSAA? Big problem would be enough officials available.

Possibly. But as mentioned below, the IHSAA was discussing it to make it a sanctioned sport. Does that mean they'd handle it?

Not sure  if there is anything to it......

In the thread, someone had posted a screenshot from the IHSAA minutes to discuss it.

Using approximate counts from what Frozen said, this would be a relative look at a class break down with 32 in 6/5A and 63 in 1A-4A. This also does not include adjustments due to the success factor.

With Jeffersonville now back in 6A, I wonder if the sectional will shrink to four teams or if they will pull someone else in as the fifth team. Probably depends on who’s in 5A once the IHSAA determines who’s moving up and who’s moving down due to the success factor.

Agreed, there could be a lot to impact it. It may also depend if they decide to keep 34 in 5a again. For now, I see sectional 14 and 16 remaining the same, minus Jeff for 16. But depending on who gets in 5a, it could impact 14 with a possible additional team. I don't think there is anyone far enough south to add to 16, unless they wanted to bump East to it. It's just my opinion, but the all HHC sectionals just aren't as much fun.

  6. I saw this topic discussed some in a thread about a school shutting down their program for the time being and wanted to see if anyone had any additional info. According to that thread, 8 man football was on its way in Indiana. A few questions...

    When will this start?

    Which schools will be participating?

Will they have their own state tourney?

I think it is a great thing for the state and for smaller schools who may not have the numbers for 11 man football.

  7. How many are in each class currently? We could do a rough estimate of who's in each class.

Also, if these are numbers from the fall count day, will they be accurate come the spring count day? And does the IHSAA use the spring count instead of fall? All the online schools and COVID stuff have made enrollments wacky at a lot of places. And spring enrollments in some places see bigger jumps after parents get tired of online school in the first semester.

According to the new Department of Education enrollment numbers that @HoopsCoach posted in another thread, here are the enrollment numbers and rankings within the state.

    29. Jeffersonville - 2,099

    43. Floyd Central - 1,854

    47. New Albany - 1,787

    54. Seymour - 1,604

    60. Columbus East - 1,534

    69. BNL - 1,391

    82. Jennings County - 1,180

Jeff, Floyd Central, Seymour, and East all experienced some growth.

New Albany, BNL, and Jennings County all shrunk. I understand why Jennings County shrunk but what’s the deal with New Albany and BNL?

Are they going up the hill to Floyd since the hoops team is now better?? 😆

Kidding. Mostly... But that is really interesting. Just a few years ago, New Albany was over 2000. Floyd's enrollment seems to have been pretty steady around 1800. Looks like that sectional in 5a will remain pretty similar.

1 - If a team wants to play them out of conference that's one thing. Being forced to play a team year after year knowing you're going to win isn't going to do much for your program. Take East Central out of the equation, adding Jennings County and Madison now gives a team like Lawrenceburg two more games that won't do anything for them in the playoffs.

2 - I think the Mid Southern would be a good fit for them. They're a small 4A school and may be 3A here soon which would fit well with that conference.

1 - I agree, but if the EIAC expanded to enough teams, they wouldn't necessarily have to play all teams in the EIAC. With the big school/small school split, they could stick to playing the teams they have to play in their division and playing whoever outside of that. Realistically, it's all hypothetical anyway because I don't see it happening.

2 - I also agree, but that is disappointing to hear what Frozen said about denial, at least for the time being. I do get it. Before Clarksville's exit, they only had 1 out of conference game and that was tough to schedule. Or at least the schedules were very locked in. Perhaps conference members enjoy the flexibility of 2 out of conference games.

  10. 1 hour ago, Old Man High Pants said:

Both were talked about a few years back, not sure how serious those talks were. Lately Madison has come into the discussion among the ADs again. And Milan! Which to me would be even dumber than bringing in Connersville and Rushville.

If you added JC & Madison without dropping Connersville and Rushville, those 4 schools would be competitive with each other. South Dearborn already plays both schools. They could be competitive with FC and, Greensburg and Batesville at times as well. No one in the EIAC is really competitive with EC or Lawrenceburg right now.

Milan and Madison make sense from a location standpoint as well as the fact they are both independent, so it could make scheduling easier for both. Milan, though a very solid 1a program, is still a small school for that conference. Then again, they already play 4 EIAC teams plus Madison.

  11. 17 hours ago, Frozen Tundra said:

Would you want Jennings County and Madison in place of Rushville and Connersville? I believe both Madison and the former North Vernon High School were once part of the conference. JC and Madison both seem to be a better fit for the EIAC these days than they do (or, in Madison’s case, did) the HHC.

Didn't JC try a few years back? Either they were denied or decided not to go forward. Or was it Madison was denied because JC didn't want to make the move and the EIAC wanted balanced divisions? That seems familiar. At least geographically speaking, I think it makes sense. JC would be the second largest school in the conference, I believe. I think Madison is enjoying their independence and freedom to schedule as they want. However, their week 1 opponent this year is the 5a defending state champ in Kentucky that would probably have beaten East last year, so there is a little irony in their new schedule.

Conferences are a confederation of schools. The IHSAA has no role in the creation of or regulation of conferences. Plus, almost every school in the HCC or the MIC is in either one of the two largest football classes and the largest class in other classed sports. Why use what's happening between these two leagues as an excuse to breakdown the rest of the state's conferences? You think a team of mostly Class A schools cares about the MIC or HCC?

I say it for 3 reasons.

1 - The potential ripple effect this could have. It could lead to a scramble of conference moves and changes from the 4a-6a level. That would impact nearly half the schools in the state as is. I'm not saying it will happen to that extent, but it is likely to effect more than just the MIC and the HCC.

2 - Conferences have been altered around the state over the last several years with schools moving in and out of conferences in order to be more competitive (from 1A-6A). Schools could stop seeking so many different moves if the state made a move to districts. It would level the playing field to a certain extent. You would only be required to the play the schools in your district that would have a similar enrollment. Then you could schedule games out of district that fit the competitive status of your school. You could redraw districts every 2-3 years and that would take into account changes in enrollment.

3 - It would give an objective measure to seed the playoffs. How'd you finish in your district? That determines your seed in the playoffs. I am not saying a qualifying playoff, you could still do all-in with this.

My disclaimer as always - I don't actually think it would happen. It's too much change. But I do think it makes a lot of sense.

Conference championships are the ceiling for the vast majority of schools in the state.  A small number of schools, both pp and public, dominate the post season year after year.

Without a conference title to pursue, or without conferences to hold schools together athletically, we lose rivalries and lids lose something to play for.

You can still win a district championship. It's essentially the same thing without the history of the conference behind it.

I’m trying to figure out if this is a serious statement. There’s only 32 teams, so show me a sample schedule that doesn’t involve more than 100 miles of travel.

This is a regular thing in other states. I'm not saying it's right or good, but it is typical. 5A/6A squads in western Kentucky have to travel 2+ hours for district games or playoff games. It happens a handful of times a year.

Districts is the Texas model ... among others.  With that said, the reason that Texas has qualifications is not because it has a district model, but because it currently takes until this weekend that Texas will hold its state finals ... and that's WITH only taking the top four teams out of each district.  Some of the Texas districts have 10 teams in them.

Their post season, after a 10-week season, started November 11.  Could you imagine if they played an all-in tourney?  That would take them in to next year.

Yes and for Texas that makes sense. I still don't see why it couldn't work here. I think there'd still be a fair amount of teams that would play that would have played in conference anyway and if you had a rivalry from a conference, you could keep it if they weren't in your district.

Indiana could still do districts and not do all in.

Thats for states that have qualification based playoffs.  Thats not the Indiana model

But why does it have to be? A district set up gives teams a much more flexible scheduling model. If everyone makes the playoffs, why does it matter how your regular season is configured? But if we do move to a "top 2 are seeded" type of look that has been proposed, such a setup would lend itself to an easier way to do that.

Is Jeffersonville now looking for a new coach? Listed on JH http://scoreboard.homestead.com/football/coachingchanges.htm#loaded

Any news or information on this situation?

Any news out of Jennings County Coaching Search?

Trying to learn more about the Southern part of the state's football schools!

I saw that on JH, too. I have not heard anything, nor seen it from any source down here. JH did accidently put Jeff on that list last year. You couldn't blame Coach Parker. He is a full time Jeffersonville police officer (maybe a higher ranked guy?). I'm sure that was a tough thing to balance. He has done a nice job with bringing discipline to the program.

I know nothing on the JC search.

1000000000000% last pick of the year..

    Cathedral by 42!

Also, a big congrats to New Albany. Haven’t had a team from the HHC go this far in a long time (outside of East). Congrats on a great year.

Agreed. Hats off to Coach Cooley & Co.

But you pose a good question. Who has made it that far besides East? Seymour in 99 (who also lost to Cathedral in Semi State)? That's it, it would appear. That would make NA just the 2nd team besides East to advance that far.

But yes, give me Cathedral this weekend.
