Do you want to know how hard HS football 5 person officiating is. This play is 100% a prime example. BJ is keying/responsible for the 2 receivers at the bottom of the screen since this is a trips formation (notice how he is shaded toward those receivers). The wing at the bottom of the screen then would have the 3rd receiver in. But he's keying off the right tackle to read run or pass so he knows whether to keep his focus on that receiver or the blocking of the tackle.

The official at the top of the screen is responsible for the receiver at the top of the screen, the RB on his side and the left tackle. He too is keying off the left tackle for run vs pass. This left tackle determines where his eyes need to go next. In this play. The left tackle fires out like a run, you can't see that wing's eyes but his mechanics are then to keep an eye on that tackle for holding (since it looks like a run). It's fuzzy when you can see the top wings head come onto the screen but, it looks like he is looking at the tackle at the time of the grab. The BJ is focused on the opposite side of the field, so he probably doesn't see the grab either. This is just a black hole in 5 person officiating.

So when @Bobref says the crew thought the ball was just past the receiver at the time of the grab, the HL eyes got to the receiver about this time in the play and he admits he saw the grab, but the eyes were focused where they were supposed to be focused (the tackle) so when they transitioned to the receiver, the ball was probably just wizzing past the receiver.

Here is what the manual says word for word:

    6. Initial keys are as follows:
    a. B has the widest receiver on the strong side of the formation. Note: if players are “stacked” one behind the other, the player closest to the line of scrimmage is considered
    to be wider.
    b. The wing official on the strong side of the formation has the inside receiver(s) on that side.
    c. The wing official on the weak side of the formation has any receivers on that side.
    d. If the strong side of the formation has three eligible receivers (“trips”), then B takes the two widest receivers on the strong side, and the wing on the strong side takes the inside receiver.
    e. Wing officials always key on receivers out of the backfield who came from inside the tackles toward them.

After the snap, observe your keys and read the near tackle to determine run or pass. Hold the line of scrimmage until the ball carrier crosses it.
Watch the initial charge of linemen.
Watch blocking on the back side on runs to the opposite side of the field.

    Did you watch the clip?

As it so happens, I was the evaluator on the 2A game, and was in a position to get a decent look at that play. I made a note to discuss it with the crew in the postgame debrief. Everyone was in the right position, looking at the right things. The covering official felt that the objectionable contact occurred after the ball was already past the receiver. Without going to the video, I have no reason to question his judgment. Either way, it was a bang-bang play and the classic judgment call. So, if it turns out the objectionable contact was a hair before the ball was past the receiver, I’m not going to fault the official for making his judgment at game speed. Either way, to label that no-call as “egregious” is, well … egregious.

If you saw that play and thought it was anything close to a "judgement call," you need new glasses.

Your right. Thanks for answering your own question on that one! Games would have been very competitive such as coming within 3 against Castle and competing for 4 quarters against Central. Although IMO Central would be the only L. To each its own. The world may never know.

Could be. I guess we won't know because memorial got pushed out of 3A. Not a lot of competition around here in 3A this year with Heritage hills and gibson southern both having down years. Would have been interested to see how many TD memorial would win by if they were still in 3A.

I'm not sure what you are gettin at here, but my simple answer to that is YES, 100% believe they could have competed in the SIAC this year. What "blemish" on Southridge's record this year makes you think otherwise?

I'm not insinuating that SR would not compete. I think they would have ended up around 5-4 or 4-5 in the conference depending what team they replaced, but games would have been competitive.

Just curious, did you read into the Tell City team that they assembled for their sectional game against LS at all? i encourage you to check the lineups for both the game against SR and the game against LS and see that they did not have half of their starters in the sectional game. If they did, I think it is very likely that they would be playing this weekend in the regionals.

And to go along with your call for us to play MD, Jasper, etc after the year. I'm sure our guys would GLADLY accept that challenge to knock off MD at the Reitz Bowl once again as well as put it to Jasper.

Do you think SR would play within 3 of 5A sectional Champs Castle? Compete for 4 quarters with 4A powerhouse Evansville central?

Hahaha you couldn’t be more wrong. According to your theory all coaches don’t make mistakes. Any coach, even coach Goebel (who I know better than most since he married into my family) has a misstep. I suppose you think meteorologists are never wrong either because they’ve been doing it for years.

Just saying he's been coaching long enough to know. More coaching experience than you. This time of year its about surviving and advancing. MD clearly had advanced when the running clock started, so why take even a chance someone gets hurt? Its happened too many times, a team frustrated their season is over takes some cheap shots (linton did not do this, just saying it happens) and a starter is now down for the count. On to regionals for 3 SIAC teams

U must normally watch EJFL games. If the WR catches that bomb then converts the onside kick, we are talking about a 2 possession game with 6 minutes left.

And in fact I spend most of my Saturdays at CYFL. Just so happened to catch this game streaming last night while in the stands. Dont think Goebel needs to learn any lessons from a poster on here at this point in his career.

That’s actually not true at all. Did u watch the game? LS missed out on a bomb of a touchdown that would have cut the lead to two touchdowns with about half the 4th left. Their WR had us beat and luckily enough the ball went through his fingertips. If Goebel would have kept the starters in until at least the start of the 4th he wouldn’t have had to put them back in towards the end of the game.

Lol. It was 37-0 when the running clock started. Even with the two quick scores and one late score, the game finished a 3 possession game. It would have taken another 2 quarters to score enough points to come back.
