For all of you guys that have been involved/ following the PAC for years, I'm curious to see why you think Pike Central has struggled so badly? Talent? Culture? Coach Roach was able to have success on the hardwood, so I find it hard to believe it is just because of talent. Over the last 25 years they have only had one season where they won 4 games. I'm curious to hear the thoughts of people that have been around the conference.

The coal business results in families who do not stay in the community. That's the short of it. They've had minor success in basketball when they get 2-3 players, but to build a football program, they need generational stability IMHO.

In regards to Jasper joining the SIAC - to each their own I suppose. But the fact they "thought" the PAC would not provide enough competition is just comical. Maybe they dominate in a lot of "non marquee" sports...but in football, wrestling, basketball, and baseball, they ain't winning the PAC most years. Just sayin....but hey, you take those hour  drive on a Thursday night and the awesome revenue gates you'll pull in when you play Bosse/Harrison/Central on a Friday night in football as opposed to SHS/HH/Gibson...brilliant decision.

What about Jasper's soccer, swimming, golf, volleyball, and tennis programs? It does make sense. We football fans may not like it, but Jasper is more than football, baseball, and basketball.

What makes you think this Vincennes game and Mt. Vernon game will be so close. I have seen Vincennes in their first game but I haven't seen Mt. Vernon. Is MV any better than they were last year? Traditionally VIncennes takes care for MV pretty good. So from your prediction I feel that this MV team must be better than they have been in previous years. Coach Brunson is a good coach and I am sure he will get them going in the right direction. I just don't see it happening right now.

I don't think there will be much offense.

I am sure it will be on 104.7 WITZ Southwestern Indiana's Powerhouse! With Walt Ferber and the Coach Terry Gobert!

Is HH QB healthy this week? I thought I read somewhere that he missed last week's game.

Does it matter who is turning around and handing the ball off 45 times?

What about Booneville and North Knox????

And if memory serves me correct, that 2001 rain delayed game HH won 14-7 and Coach Clayton never ran a single play outside of the Tackles all night.

Everything old is new again. Jasper went on to win 10 straight and the Class 3A champion (Chatard) was every bit as good as the 4A.

  6. After correctly picking Jasper to win at Boonville, I'm going to be a homer and take the Patriots by five points in The Jungle. This will be the 19th game since the two teams started playing in the regular season in 2001. HH was fresh off a state championship and Jasper had one of the best running backs in the state in Brian Lewis. The game was delayed because of torrential rains. God only knows the conversations that took place between coaches, ADs, and officials. All I know as a sophomore on that team was we dressed, undressed, and redressed at least three times before starting around 9 p.m. (Central time, 10 p.m. Eastern/Jasper time). We and Jasper took turns doing last minute walkthroughs and stretches in the basketball gymnasium. When all was said and done, the game ended in a HH victory and was junior Cole Seifrig's coming out party as one of the best all-around athletes in Indiana -- at RB, WR, safety, KR, PR, and special teams safety.

I think this game will see HH run until Jasper can stop it ... let's see if it takes 7, 8, or 9 in the box to do so.

Mount Carmel had a good showing against Mount Vernon, I'll take our friends on the other side of the Wabash, the Golden Aces by 23 ... Does anyone know if this series will continue?

Lincoln in a tight one on the road. 15-13 Alices with one or two big plays or mistakes being the difference.

North Daviess ... I know nothing about this one, but it's always nice to stick it to Washington in any sport even though they probably have the best selection of restaurants in any SW Indiana town... Elnora watcha got?

    DISGUST!

That is the only word that comes to mind after reading this article.

    REVOLTING!

That comes in a close second.

I remember clearly (40 years - just had my reunion this past weekend.  Great fun)  how proud I was when my parents and family came to watch me play high school football in Highland, Indiana.

Id imagine some of these kids today are embarrassed if their trashy parents take some time away from Netflix to come out and watch junior on the gridiron.

I officiated for 10 years, mostly at the peewee, bantam end junior high level.  It wasn't too bad back then, but now watching as a fan, i see the behavior much more up close in the stands.

I will admit, Ive tuned in to YouTube and watched many of these situations escalate into all out brawls.  Its rather humorous, but sad at the same time.

Id love to see Bobby Cox and his team make an example of some schools who allow this kind of behavior on their premises.  Game forfeitures and or suspensions will get peoples attention.

Spectatorless games cut into the coffers of those who should be responsible for keeping order. There was a case, in Texas a few years ago I believe, where two teams had to play or continue a game without any spectators. Only players, coaches and officials.

  8. First time a PAC school has played a 6A team. Perhaps even a 5A team in the new alignment system.

Will be interested to see if Gibson platoons or uses its tournament and championship rotations playing the best players two ways.

Has Southport seen Gibson's no huddle offense? That could be troublesome early on if Southport plays some kind of zone (or worse man) and can't pressure the QB. I think physically the Titans will be able to block and tackle, let's see if fatigue factors in.

Didn't even need PHP right Chris!

Ha, no (he is very vulnerable to data loss and I'd be interested to know what kinds of redudency he has built in both online and offline). And he did kind of cheat and get IU's computer science or statistics department to allow Jeff Sagarin to use their "supercomputers" in the 1980s to do basketball ratings in the 1980s which were published in the Bloomington paper and then picked up by The Star and others, eventually.

Sagarin won't fully reveal how he does his ratings because some are used directly or indirectly by companies and organizations like the NCAA, PGA Tour, USA Today, casinos, etc... Just as someone has written a book about Bill James, Jeff Sagarin's story needs to be told. Everything is proprietary (or based on other statistical work/proofs), but I'm not sure he makes much from it other than ad revenue, whatever books he has written, conferences spoken at etc...

Everyone looks at things differently, but I don't think they look at it that way...won like one outright PAC title (in like the mid-80's) and a handful of shared titles or so in many, many years, so don't think that was a consideration.  I've not heard any news of their staff being on the hot seat because of their lack of PAC titles.

Of course you may be right...maybe they are looking to make up for all those years without winning PAC titles because it's had a negative impact on their program and this will help them in the all-sports trophy standings...by the way, who won that the last however many years?  I'll have to look it up, I couldn't tell you..  I do think that's why Southridge started soccer as well, so they could give themselves a better chance at winning the all-sports trophy.

Not trying to be a total rear here, have a little fun on a Friday, but the idea that the PAC title is what they are gunning for each year and that was their goal to be in what some of you think is a lesser side of the conference...talking minus GS/HH/BV (who are on SR's schedule) is not it and I'm not sure everyone would agree with you that is the case anyway...some years maybe and some years maybe not.

I"m sure they'll be happy if they win it because it means they won games and played good football, but that is a product of playing good football and getting better every week and thus probably playing well at the most important time of the year which is tournament time.

Like the rest of the teams here, I'm sure they are looking to do what is best for their program and get better every week and hopefully be healthy and play well at the end of the season.

How is the school corporation's attendance trending in the middle and elementary schools? In 5-10 years, do you expect Southridge to have a higher or lower attendance than what it does now. Being on the line (and even if you could convince Tecumseh), perhaps attendance was a factor.

Seeing the Jasper game go is just a travesty, but other than that, I can see the Southridge side of it.

Easy now big fella, I didn't say they weren't a competitive team, I said it no longer is a signature win.  The classy way in which you take shots at GS in response to just about anything I say is fine...if you think that they somehow get under my skin you are mistaken.  My oldest son was a 3 year starter on that 2015 team that lost to Chatard....I have slept just fine ever since that loss (and any real football guy understands why).  Your behavior here somewhat mimics that of your players that last couple times they have been to GS.  As they say, the apples never seem to fall too far from the trees.  Keep up the good work!

Jasper pulls an upset at Boonville ... really though, look at Sagarin's ratings. Even though Week 2, how is Jasper a 4-TD favorite?

Mount Vernon because I have no idea about Mount Carmel and it's a shame they are leaving the Big 8 (honestly, their city council would probably agree to be annexed to the State of Indiana ... as would the southern third of Illinois)

Princeton ... surely Princeton has played Washington more than any other team in football and basketball, right? That's reason enough.

    Floyd Central (59.69) is a 16-point favorite (1.69-point home-field advantage) against Vincennes (45.22)

  12. I had the opportunity to sit on the same computer that he had used at the Bloomington Herald-Times when I was there in 2014-15. He is a legend. He automated many processes in the late 1980s and 1990s via computer and we would occasionally have to call him in to "update" his old scripts for the newspaper.

His work in Java (.json and Regex) really taught me that not everything has to be complicated and served as my inspiration for the Predictor Tool.

He was going to introduce me to Jeff Sagarin, but we never had schedules which match up. Oh well, next time that I'm in Bloomington perhaps we'll be able to do it.

The IHSAA, coaches and officials' associations, principals, ADs and fans owe him more than the measley ad revenue he earns through the website.

Great point. The programs that want to win championships will spend money to make it happen. The X31 is freaking sweet!

Send me a quote. I'm very interested. Go ahead and send the account and routing numbers. If you send your pin, do I get a discount? Can you send me a formal quote based on conference, sectional, regional, semis, state winning? I intend to invest in this venture.
