That's what you said last year....and week 1 pretty much looked like week 11..... very effective.

You work with what you have. If you have D1 sophomore QB, throw the ball. If you have to play Butcher ball in football and then try to break out a few plays in the sectional, then you do it. No one ever had problems with Jasper in the 1990s passing more with Mauck, HH with Cutler, Mater Dei with the Schiffs.

Gibson dominated Chatard on the game in 2013 or whenever, but couldn't hold onto the ball. It's 3A. Fit the scheme to the players, especially with a small roster.

Why is Castle "down?" They have the feeder system, stability, it should be time for some generational success to return from the Lidy days. Are kids going out too often for other sports?

    My week 1 power rankings:

    1. Memorial(1-0)

Nothing much to say about Memorial after dominating the game right before the starters left. Combs was a beast the whole game, along with the defense. The offense went better than I expected it to be too.

    2. Mater Dei(1-0)

Not much said either, they dominated Indian Creek like it was nothing. Question is? How long will the stay as a top team.

    3. Central(0-1)

Though their game wasn't the best performance, they still have the talent to be good. Central's biggest concerns are to fix their OL/DL and discipline.

    4. Reitz(0-1)

    You'll figure it out.

    5. North(1-0)

Welcome to the top 5, North. Your dominance against Princeton has given you the #5 spot.

    6. Castle(0-1)

Might be a little harsh on Castle, but last Friday night was not a good performance at all.

    7. Bosse(0-1)

There's talent at Bosse, but VL was a little better Friday

    8. Harrison(0-1)

    Nothing much too say

I think we know that Mater Dei is not going to regress. They may get banged up being the smallest team in the SIAC, but they always seeem to be resilient. They've had a few thin years, but so long as they don't beat themselves, they should at least be able to match anyone with gameplanning on any given week.

Reitz is the real wildcard (and HC for that matter). I haven't seen the HC game, but let's see how they do and if Reitz can build on any strengths. Not sure if Central is back to being the Central of old or if they were really hampered by the roster. Figure it out. Don't run between the tackles and get the ball to the outside. At least be sound in special teams and the Bears could surprise ... they could also sink.

Not sure what I can do to contribute, but I am here for a good time and long time

More than you know. It all starts with the snap. Is the umpire in Indiana now in the offensive backfield like in the NFL or still behind the linebackers... Is it a personal perference, or 6/7 man crews dictate it or even offensive styles?

The poor umpire during the Lafayette game this week probably is at the chiropracter from placing the ball and the white hat is getting a shoulder replacement from winding the clock..

Gonna say with exceptions if MD and Mem. The SIAC is as week as it has maybe ever been. Even both if those teans beat very mediocore teams at best.

Lest we never forget the very politically correct Wabash Apaches!  With that, other PC losers have to go out to the Anderson,Lake Central, Missisnewa, Portage, South Bend St. Joseph's Indians, and no, you're not immune Brebeuf Braves and Calumet Warriors...or even you, South Newton Rebels...

    Clay City Eels.

South Spencer Rebels with Confederate Gray, Blue, Red, and White. Yes, I believe a few Confederate battles or skirmishes occurred in Spencer (then Warrick I believe) County.

Vincennes Alices is also a good one.

Ehhh besides all that is that they graduated Lindauer and the older Combs boy.  They will be just fine I’m sure but in no way would I say that this year’s Memorial team is on the same level as last year.  You can’t reload that level of play. You can only build that back up and that takes time

As I said, Reitz loses, Memorial opened with an always tough opener at a program like Jasper. Tigers ranked 4 to 7 after Week 1. Central lost. Roncalli lost.

Memorial has been reloading for the past ten years under Hurley. Add in a Castle, Bosse, Harrison or other transfer at a needed spot and they'll play an above average 4A schedule and be perfectly comfortable in their sectional.

Dont know Darrell personally but he lives just down the street from me.

Well I'd say go meet at Windell's, but you might have to settle for a strombolli now at Jenks... Darrell and his sons are terrific. Do you have his book about the history of Dale? Lots of photos showing for example how the square has transformed over time, like the old pharmacies and bank buildings at the intersection of old 231 and 62 (the Mariah Hill to Lynnville road).

I know we had a bunch of special teams touchdowns when Winchell, Goldsberry, Cutler and Seifrig  played, The 9 year period from Winchells Sophomore season until Seifrigs Senior season Heritage Hills had a overall record of 94-9 and in those years opponents punted to us a heck of a lot more then they kicked off so I would imagine the majority of those special teams TDs were via the punt return .

I honestly can't   remember the Flippins  3 Punt Return touchdown game in 1999 but should if it happened because he didn't do things like that on a consistent bases like the other 4.

Brandon was a great athlete and person. I believe he went on to become a doctor or lawyer at University of Louisville. I want to say the three INT game was against Wood Memorial or Tecumseh. I believe the power outage was against Pike and the ADs and officials called that game. That was when Pike had a coach who refused running clocks and passed when down seven TDs.

I just purchased that book and the Spencer County book can go on the book shelf with the 20 Indiana Football Digests, "Local Legends 100 years of Southwestern Indiana Sports book,"  "Silenced Bells A Pictorial history of former Indiana high Schools" , A few Indiana High School basketball record books and a past issue of Hoosier Basketball.

Is the Dale Library also getting them or taking donations? I think Daryl Lovell would be very interested. I would love to be able to know his collection, the Finecies, Haaff and Hargis will have their personal archives stored at a school or library.

  10. Just a personal note and relaying the thoughts of other admins, moderators, staff, boosters, and contributors...

Thank you very much for making Week 1 of the 2019 football season a success on the forum for supporters of the Indiana HS football community. The server crash was unfortunate. Lessons were learned. Thankfully @DK_Barons @77Jimmie were able to provide us with a platform to discuss and connect on a message board.

Mayor @Coach Nowlin and @Irishman and others greatly have stepped up and taken some of the weight off of other staff.

@crimsonace1 keeps us in-line and is a voice of reason

@WCGrad92and @sr1 are others with multiple jobs teaching and involved at schools but still make contributions to TGD.

@DaveMosbey and @Miner_Pride's consistency is unmatched on TGD and is only rivaled by John Harrell and @Rudy, and a few others across  the state.

Even @Muda69 and @DT thank you for the banter. @Mrs Gridirondigestshared a message with the administrators saying how happy that Coach Adams' legacy and love for INHSFB lives on.

@dawgieinthepound turned corporate, doubt he can find his way back to Casketville.

I'm still working and living in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (8 time zones ahead of most of you). In June, my father visited for 10 days and I married my fiancee ... You can send me a personal FB invitation https://www.facebook.com/Chrstopher.Johannes or follow my professional work as a journalist in the Middle East for three years now at https://www.facebook.com/cmjohannes812

I plan to allocate more time to TGD: getting the Predictor Tool back up, rebuilding our http://Twitter.com/gridirondigest to more than 10,000 followers by the end of the season, and contributing more on threads.

Again thank you all and anyone we left out like top contributers this week @gonzoron @Impartial_Observer and @Impartial_Observer

Any @Bobref sitings or have @SoIndRef and IO taken that load?

PS: We need more northern representation on the board. If you are interested in becoming a referee, send The Sheriff, Nowlin, me and any other staff your interest...

They are 10th. That probably about right not knowing how good the squad is and losing crucial players to graduation.  I’m sure they will climb the ranks as the season goes on.  If they beat central and Reitz I’m certain they will be close to the top again.

    Tis just a preseason poll

State Champions in a class that was probably better than 4A last year... It's not hard. Why am I advocating for a private school like Memorial? Too much sand and dust in the brain here in Iraq.

A cat will win regardless at Jerry Brewer Alumni Crusades Artificial Turf Field. Or is it stadium. It's Jasper and Memorial. Three overtimes, rain and lightning delays, a reurn on Saturday would make this Patriot fan happy.

No one has created a thread for the PAC in the Pick'Em Club. Link:

Here are my Week 1 winners, if anyone decides to create a thread in that forum (or run it here until then ... I have enough on my plate):

Gibson Southern (as much as they want)
Heritage Hills (HH wins, I don't see them scoring more than five TDs)
    Tell City (toss up)
    Brown County (toss up)
North Posey (South Spencer probably wants revenge, but do they have the horses to win in Poseyville?)
Southridge (hold on to the football, please)

No challengers? I'm the automatic winner of this final iteration of the the PAC Pick'Em challenge?

Stop being pansies and take three minutes to post your winners.

  13. Post your live scores and highlights on this thread for 2019 Week 1 games on August 24-25.

Sorry to steal your thunder Dirt Devil. You need to to register.

Also you can follow along on Twitter. Tweet @gridirondigest, #TGD or #GID to automatically retweet your scores (please limit it to previews score changes, quarters, and end-of-games.) Our 8,000+ followers will see your update instantly. I think we can be at 10,000 by Week 3.

MINER PRIDE sighting!!!  NOW, the season is officially underway.  As always, great writeup!  You are THE best, my friend!  Can't make the game tonight, but will catch the broadcast.  Hoping its you and Darren.

    Go Miners!!!

His post almost wanted me to change my pick (no pun). Then, I remembered how hard it is to stop the Wing-T consistently when you don't have much tape or tendency.

I think the Raiders win with fewer than two turnovers plus TDs given up in special teams.

Should be a great Week 1 learning experience for both squads. No losers or playoff implications in Indiana!

Haven't read it. Probably didn't say anything you couldn't read here.

Having been a former employee on the Sports Desk at the H-T briefly from 2015-2016, I have a soft spot for what that staff has tried to maintain for high school sports... especially Harrell, Beane, Gordillo, and others.

There was a game my senior year at Jasper where Southridge was dominating us in the wishbone (I believe it was, may have been Wing T).  Then for some reason, they went away from it.

Jasper has gone through iterations under Brewer and then especially Ahrens where their base was I Formation, Double TE, Flanker R/L; a true Power I; a FB/HB/TB (basically a triangle); and also more recently under Ahrens a true Wishbone and inverted Wishbone (two FBs...). They were never able to develop effective passing out of the Wishbone.

Later Ahrens went to some spread sets and I believe even some Pistol/motion stuff. One thing you can always count on is Jasper having a 6-3, 230 pound RB/FB type probably with the name Schmidt or Schuetter or Messinger or Lewis, who can get you three yards on most well-blocked plays.

Let's see how the Wishbone develops in the 21st century against newer defenses liked the 4-2-5, 3-3-5, 3-5-3, and other alignments. Using the middle of the field is often forgotton in this new-fangled world of tip-toeing WRs and presnap reads/sideline audibles.
