  1. I'm not a huge follower of the SIAC but what has happened to Evansville Central in recent years? They were competing for conference titles it seemed like year in and year out and even a state title no so long ago. I don't understand such a dramatic drop off in such a short period of time.

  2. Mooresville (1-2) @ Greenwood (3-0)- Greenwood turned some heads last week lighting up the scoreboard once again. The offense seems to be the real deal and the QB is putting teams on notice. I expect another high scoring performance in what should be Greenwood's toughest test to date. Greenwood 35-31

Martinsville (1-2) @ DC (2-1)- DC's sophomore D1 qb was hurt last week vs Whiteland. Unsure of his current status, but either way DC should be able to take this one. DC 31-13

Perry Merdian (1-2) @ Plainfield (3-0)- Plainfield should continue to roll this week with a big one in the waiting next week vs Whiteland. Although, Perry Merdian seems to have some fight in them this year and can upset a team who is not prepared.  Plainfield 28-17

Whiteland (2-1) @ Franklin (2-1)- Whiteland places itself in the driver's seat of the conference after beating DC handily last week. Whiteland 31-21

  5. Greenwood (2-0) @ Martinsville (1-1)- Greenwood's offense gets a tougher test this week playing Martinsville. Greenwood 38-21

DC (2-0) @ Whiteland (1-1)- DCs win last week was surprising and a huge win for the Hawks. They have the talent to beat anyone, but I foresee the experience factor playing a role in a loss or two this season. Whiteland got beat by a very good Kokomo squad. This one could have some ramifications over deciding the eventual Mid-State champion. DC 24-21

Plainfield (2-0) @ Mooresville (1-1)- Plainfield gets a big win over #6 Harrison. They will likely see them again come sectional time. Plainfield 31-21

Franklin (1-1) @ Perry Meridan (1-1)- Franklin jumps out early and doesn't step off the brakes. Franklin 42-17

Greenwood at Indian Creek-will see this game

Martinsville at Bloomington South-IF south is real, they should ragdoll the Artesians after Martinsville came back late at home against BNL. If you want to watch MOR football, here is your link to that game.

    My mistake. Misread on Maxpreps.

Martinsville @ BS- BS looks to be a legit contender for 5A this year. BS 42-17

  8. Franklin @ Mt. Vernon- Good test for the Cubs after the week 1 bye. Franklin 24-17

Perry @ Southport- Chance for Perry to get in the win column. Southport looking for its first win in over 2 years. Perry 31-14

Harrison @ Plainfield- Harrison looks to get revenge for last year's sectional matchup. Plainfield 24-21

New Pal @ DC- New Pal will be too much to handle for the inexperienced Hawks. New Pal 35-17

Greenwood @ Martinsville- Greenwood QB #s were eye popping last week. He will be throwing the ball a lot to keep them in games. Martinsville 35-24

Kokomo @ Whiteland- Should be a solid game. Whiteland will prevail in the end. 24-10

    FC @ Perry- FC 38-7

I’ll give you #1…need more insight on #2.

Why’d they stop playing?  Did CG reach back out after the MIC falling out?

I'll take another 5A school in the Mid-State to continue to dominate. DC had a down year, but they have won the conference 7 out of the last 8 years? They do not benefit from the SES like Whiteland will, but I don't see them not competing with Whiteland (or beating them constantly) for the foreseeable future.

Did a weekly installment of this last fall at it generated discussion and received solid feedback so I’m gonna give it a go again in 2023.

Here’s how I see the state’s top 25, regardless of class, heading into the opening week.

Admittedly, my knowledge of central Indiana (my backyard) is better than other areas but I did some homework and even picked the brains of some GID members for which I am grateful.

Once the season starts, I’ll post these every weekend after surfing game results.

I’ll keep 50 teams in my database (25 honorable mention) weekly but will await week 1 results before doing so.

    Critique away!

    1. Center Grove
    2. Cathedral
    3. Ben Davis
    4. Hamilton Southeastern
    5. Brownsburg
    6. Carmel
    7. Westfield
    8. Warren Central
    9. Carroll (Fort Wayne)
    10. Fishers
    11. Valparaiso
    12. East Central
    13. Lawrence North
    14. Lawrence Central
    15. Crown Point
    16. Fort Wayne Snider
    17. New Palestine
    18. Roncalli
    19. Bishop Chatard
    20. Penn
    21. Fort Wayne North
    22. Whiteland
    23. Franklin Central
    24. Merrillville
    25. West Lafayette

I think Plainfield and DC are both going to be better than Whiteland in the Mid-State. Pretty solid list overall.

Hogan Denny has another year at Mooresville. My friend thought he was a better qb than Patterson as a freshman. Came into the regional game at Evansville in 2020 and led game winning drive. Superior arm.

That passing academy for the Gillins has been a nice tool for them to bring in some great qbs. Like I said, they will be competitive as long as Gillin is there. He's won everywhere he's been at. One of the best to ever coach in the state. If he were still at DC I would imagine he'd have a state championship or two by now.

Has Mooresville's run of P5 athletes stopped?  I remember they have had several big time recruits - both football and baseball - playing over the last few years but I haven't kept up with them.

Plus didn't the younger Gillin leave to coach somewhere else?

Younger Gillin is at IC. Mooresville will remain competitive until the Mike G decides to hang it up. They are losing a previous top 5-10 qb in the state though.

Any idea on schools that are most resistant to adding Carmel/Center Grove? Purely from a fan standpoint I'd love to see a conference shake up between the HCC and MIC establishing new members as such:

    New HCC

    Carmel

    Center Grove

    Westfield

    Zionsville

    Fishers

    HSE

    Noblesville

    New MIC

    Warren

    Ben Davis

    Brownsburg

    Avon

    Franklin Central

    Pike

    Lawrence Central

    Lawrence North

HCC could leave a spot open to potentially add an 8th member in Mt Vernon assuming they continue their rapid growth.

Now adding Brownsburg to the mix....this is getting ridiculous lol...

Many Mid-State programs are still of the old school mentality in hiring teachers first and if they are great coaches then so be it...the HCC/MIC use the college/SEC model of hiring great coaches and finding teaching positions for them...and the outrageous salary differences bear that out.

Off topic here...my main argument is that Avon belongs. I would think Bless would fit this description as well. It's not John Hart money, but it's still a pretty penny to coach.

  18. 4 minutes ago, temptation said:

Avon’s F/R/L percentage (there it is again) is 6x that of Zionsville’s and 4x that of Carmel’s and the gap is growing.

If by “fine” you mean bottom half of the conference in every sport, you’re right.

They’d have the lowest rate among current MIC schools.

They need to make the move.

A state championship in both Volleyball and Track in the past 5 years seem to say they'd be okay in some sports....wrestling is generally a top 10 program in the state. Bless has made the football team competitive in the HCC including a conference championship in 2019...

I'm sure DC's F/R/L is much higher than the average in the Mid-State...doesn't mean you can't compete....Avon is still affluent in a large part of the town...again....they'll be alright.

Give it time.  Were CG and Carmel to join/be accepted, Avon will not win ONE conference championship in any male/female sport.  They'd better reconsider before its too late.

    Same goes for Franklin Central.

I don't think any school in the HCC will win anything besides the school that has 3x the enrollment of most of the schools, in most cases. I don't see them all abandoning ship. The HCC schools (including Avon) are growing at a rapid rate. They'll be fine.

UIndy is in a great position, IMO. Now that St Joseph is gone, they are the only D2 school in the state.

Unlike the FBS and FCS schools, they can give partial scholarships. Big advantage IMO.

Marian becomes their stiffest competition for recruiting. Knights are 2-0 vs the Hounds as well...
