Indiana School for the Deaf is one of the smallest schools in the Indiana High School Athletic Association. Of the 317 football-playing schools, Indiana Deaf is No. 317 in enrollment with 94 students. Traders Point Christian, the next-smallest football-playing school, has 30 more students. The next-smallest public school, Attica, is almost twice as large as Indiana Deaf with 170 students. .... Watching Indiana Deaf’s team it is easy to understand why the school is considering a move to eight-man football, which is in its pilot season in Indiana. Other deaf school programs have already made the move to eight-man or six-man football and Indiana Deaf has played some eight-man this season. “I’m proud that we’re the last 11-on-11 deaf school program in the nation,” Leccese said. “But I have to step back as an AD and know that we don’t normally have the big boys across the board on the line.” But Indiana Deaf does have a quarterback. It would be a longshot, as DeFalco knows, for the program to make a run in the Class A tournament. They have never won a sectional, though the 2007 team went 9-3 and won two sectional games before falling to Cardinal Ritter 27-8 in the sectional championship. When you are outnumbered every game, you take on the spirit of an underdog. You can dream big. DeFalco smiles when he signs those dreams. “We want a state championship so bad,” he said. “That would be really crazy. They’d probably make a movie out of it.”
