  1. I hadn’t heard that story. Why would anybody think it was a good idea to taunt Branson Combs? I can only imagine Goebel’s reaction when he learned of that.
  2. I think Central should be favored to beat VL. But 20? I have a hard time imagining the Central team I saw the other night beating too many teams by 20. MD/Memorial seems off, too. That game is probably a pick ‘em….maybe MD a slight favorite. Should be a good game.
  3. If what I heard was true (and it was a good source, but second hand), then you just have to feel for the pressures HS coaches have these days. Apparently, Coultis was more permissive. And that’s part of the problem AZ has. Burgess was tougher (as evidenced by his dismissing the Evans kid). And we saw how long he lasted. How is a coach supposed to win while insisting on at least some accountability for off-the-field stuff? It’s a heckuva dilemma…and obviously some coaches feel the best answer is to just look the other way. If what I heard was right, my hat’s off to Zirkelbach for trying to instill a better culture…even if at the expense of his team’s success on the field. That has to be hard considering how much success they’ve had of late. Now that I think about it, it was Coultis who dismissed Tor’jon, wasn’t it?
  4. I’ve been told they had some players who haven’t exactly warmed to Coach Zirkelbach’s slightly more strenuous brand of discipline. I don’t know if that means they quit or were suspended or what. But there’s no question they had fewer players on the sideline last night than were listed on the roster and than they had their first couple games.
  5. Had a nice drive going on first possession. Penalty killed it. Then they had a couple PFs. Didn’t do much after that. Looked like they had just lost interest by halftime.
  6. I do think MD will contend in 2A. Memorial has a lot of work to do - especially on defense. Should get a boost this week with 3 starters back in the defensive backfield (2 from injury, 1 from suspension). But that doesn’t solve their problems up front. D line had high expectations this year. So far they’ve been a disappointment.
  7. Jaiden Thomas is making a strong bid so far for POY in the SIAC. Congrats to the Dawgs!
  8. I don’t know anything about Agler or Russell. But Shea has to sit out 20% of the games - or 2. Not exactly sure why. But I’ve been told that the Castle scrimmage counted as one. If that’s right, he should be dressed for the North game.
  9. North is reportedly missing some starters to quarantine. Ugh. Will this ever end?
  10. Yeah, but you have to credit Jasper a lot for that. They had us guessing all night. I was questioning how good the scouting and prep were. It looked at times like we just weren’t prepared for it - like it was the first time we’d seen it. Add in the OL turned FB (reminiscent of Central’s Madison last year), and it was a very potent ground game. They didn’t pass much - but were able to when they needed to.
  11. Jasper very effective running the ball. Lots of effective deception. Some power rushing, when needed. QB stayed within himself and managed the game well. Memorial has a lot to clean up. That did not look like a team with 20 returning starters. Way too many costly errors, penalties. Just sloppy. Tyler played his heart out. But it wasn’t enough to overcome the above.
  12. The defense change seems like a good move by Coach Lewis. He said they were on the smaller/quicker side up front this year. And obviously that lends itself well to a stack. I guess you just have to worry about kids adapting well to any new scheme. Even NFL players take some time until they’re familiar enough and confident enough in a new system.
  13. Well, size isn’t everything. But it’s not nothing, either. But I’ve seen way too many undersized guys — at all levels — get the better of big guys over the years to put too much stock in it. All other things equal, bigger is better than smaller. And if a kid is both big AND good, then that’s a load. And it wouldn’t surprise me to find out that all of Roncalli’s kids are both. It’s a top-notch program. And I know that Lauck is getting elite offers. But, yeah, top to bottom that’s probably the biggest OL I’ve ever seen at the HS level. There are D1 teams that won’t be that big.
  14. Yeah, most of the good public programs down our way have good youth/feeder programs. I’ve felt like GS has one that any and all programs should emulate. And I think it has a lot to do with their sustained success.
  15. We don’t “play nice” with our fellow SIAC schools. We have a terrific relationship with them, and it’s genuine. Always has been. We’re all fellow neighbors, coworkers, church members, bowling leaguers for crying out loud. Thus the whole idea of “community.” Why should we stop being as much when the uniforms go on?
  16. And yet you advocate for a statewide rule that has no distinction but public or private. Condolences to the kids at Traders Point. They’ve never even gotten out of sectional. But, regardless, they clearly have too many advantages to compete at 1A. Bump those losers up!
  17. In that case, I’m getting a crap return on my investment. Reitz has as much or more football success than we’ve ever had…and they don’t pay anything. Meanwhile, Chatard has a ton more trophies…and we’re paying almost as much as they do! You’ve got me thinking about asking for a refund, Titan.
  18. I suspect Rodes will be a big contributor for them the next 3 seasons. He’s gotten rave reviews from a couple people whose opinions I value - and he performed very well in their scrimmage. Considering all they lost from their 3-headed monster running game of a year ago, he could be just what the doctor ordered for the Bears.
  19. If there was, nobody had a way to express it in a public forum. But I do remember some talk about splitting off the PPs into their own class when the SF was adopted. I was like….back to the days of segregation, eh? Because of a bunch of sore losers? Oh well. You’ll always have people who blame the system when somebody else is more successful.
  20. Not in that situation, no. For one thing, we weren’t the team we were the year before. For another, I know that HH was pretty dang good that year and I saw what Chatard did to them in the finals. I did my Jethro Bodine gozintas and figured….glad we played East Noble in 4A!
  21. Heh…maybe. But it’s worth pointing out that being in 4A in 2019 got us a title we almost certainly wouldn’t have gotten had we been in 3A. No 3A team was going to beat Chatard that year. HH had a good team, and Chatard curb-stomped them at state. We had beaten Chatard pretty soundly the year before - but that was with Lindauer and both Combs bros.
  22. I agree! We've got a lot of catching up to do. Do me a favor....sneak into Chatard's locker room and pour some concrete in their girdles. Those guys clearly have it too easy.
