Harrison leads Zionsville 21-14 at the half.
Hope Harrison can pull this out

I thought everyone would be bored talking about field conditions ad nauseam, but clearly I was wrong

I think Mishawaka/Concord is game of the week. I see the winner beating City, Valpo and prolly Snider to represent the North and take the Cathedral beating at LOS
That would be quite the shocker

Marshall is probably the fastest ball carrier in the Region with the ball in his hand, another great pickup for the Pirates. As I mentioned before, I will be interested to see how he is used against Westfield if they play. If he stayed at Calumet, they would have easily won the sectional again.
Kid’s got a surprising amount of power and tackle breaking ability as well for his frame. I know he played RB at Calumet, but Merrillville’s been moving him around out wide, in the slot, and in the backfield. He’s definitely been a huge addition to their offense.

Sure, they have the ability to throw the ball when/if needed, but you'll never see CG come out and throw the ball 25-30 times unless it's absolutely out of necessity. That's not who they are and not how they game plan. They are a power running team who has a D1 QB capable of pushing the ball down field when necessary. When your top 3 rushers all average over 5 yards a carry, you don't need to throw the football or have a balanced offensive attack, it's why Center Grove has run the ball on more than 70% of their offensive plays this year.
CG Passing YPG: 140.1
CG Rushing YPG: 232.7
Yes, clearly run-first. But I would say that is pretty balanced, especially considering almost all of their games have been blowouts where they were certainly running the ball to kill the clock.

I personally lean this way too…but if you have 4 very athletic LBs does it matter? Is it really just more about how the 4th pass rusher does? Or if that edge rusher can make the right decisions and back off into a zone instead of pressuring when they need to?
tbh if I had it my way….4-4 stack but im sure there is a reason many teams don’t run this….probably because it’s 8 in the box
Definitely the pass rush is the first reason I like the 4-3 a little better. The 3-4 OLB is practicing drops and offer responsibilities whereas the 4-3 DE is practicing his rush a lot more. The 3-4 definitely gives you more options with blitz combos and has the advantage of 2-gapping, slanting, etc and odd fronts generally being harder for kids to block, both mentally and physically. The 4-3 is arguably more “vanilla” but there’s lots of ways to spice it up a bit. Personally if you’ve got the horses I say 4-3 but again it comes down to personnel. If you’ve got kids who can operate in space as those 3-4 OLBs you should be using that.

Probably a lot of them, but I would not call Center Grove a balanced offensive team. They are a run first team who can throw the ball when needed. Jackson has thrown the ball 126 times in 9 games. That isn't a lot.
I mean passing 14 times a game when you’ve won each game by an average of 3TDs+ and are generally only playing half the game is kind of a lot for hs. But more importantly they have the ability to be balanced. That’s what I’m talking about. If their backs were ever to the wall and they needed to pass, they could count on Jackson and those receivers. And the ability to pass also let’s them take advantage of any matchups they like in the secondary. This is what I mean when I say they have balance. Those are two attributes championship teams have. They’re just so good they haven’t really needed to show those attributes much this year lol.

Wouldn't say Center Grove is balanced. 335 of their 470 offensive plays (assuming MaxPreps is accurate) have been running plays. Guessing if Jackson wasn't a D1 QB capable of pushing the ball downfield that number would be greater. If Center Grove didn't attempt a forward pass for the rest of the year they'd still win every game by 3+ TDs. Center Grove passes out of luxury, not because they have too.
How many of those runs have been after the game is out of reach and they’re just trying to eat the clock?

which is better
3-4 or 4-3 defense? Lots of variance to these but assuming you have all the talent you could ever dream of to run either…which one does better?
4-3 myself, just hard to get 4 studs on that d-line. Prolly why most hs teams run the 3-4

Warren did it 4 straight years running the Wing T in the mid 2000s and Center Grove today runs it a hell of a lot more than they throw.
15 years ago… and CG has a D1 QB and good receivers, their most explosive plays in the state game last year were all passes. Again, not saying you gotta pass every down… balance is key
-
How many teams have won 6A/5A only running the football? Yeah you can win doing that at the lower levels but when it comes to big boy football you need to be able to have balance.

How many offers does he have?
Just got offered by ball state last week. Kid is a stud and the offers will keep coming.

6A: CG over Merrillville
5A: Cathedral over Snider
4A: Roncalli over Hobart
3A: Brebeuf over Gibson Southern
2A: Luers over Mater Dei
1A: Lutheran over Adams Central

6A: Hamilton SE- they’re gonna get Westfield again, and it’s hard to beat the same team twice in the same year. Can the Royals take out the Rocks and shake up 6A north?
Carroll - they’ve got a very good quarterback and when you have one of those you can steal some games. They’ve got a hard road with Homestead and then Warsaw but if they can get by those teams I think a regional matchup with Westfield/Hamilton SE will be interesting.
5A: Harrison - Could they shock Zionsville? They get two weeks to prepare for the Eagles while Zionsville only gets a week to get ready for the triple option. I think that is definitely a boon for the Raiders’ chances of winning. Game was relatively close last year and I think Zionsville is a little worse and Harrison is a little better. Should be a good one.
Michigan City - Getting healthy at the right time and gaining momentum stringing together some wins after a tough 3 game losing streak. Very good coaching staff with experience coaching in big games. Tough road ahead but I wouldn’t be surprised at all if this team shocked the state and made a run all the way down to LOS.
4A: Lowell - huge win over Andrean gives them a lot of momentum heading into the postseason. They’re gonna get Hobart again in the sectional championship in what should be a slugfest. The team who wins that game very easily could be representing 4A north down at LOS.
3A: Hanover Central - Should cruise to win their first sectional to set up a likely matchup with Marian. Wouldn’t be surprised at all to see the Wildcats get to the semi state. This is a solid football team.
2A: LCC- being in the southern half of the bracket is definitely an advantage. Could see them making a run with their postseason experience and battle tested QB.
1A: Winamac - If anyone is gonna take out Adams Central in 1A north, I think it will be these guys. Made a run last year and returned a lot of that team. Experienced and hungry. It should come down to them and AC in the semi state.
-
Having seen the City vs Valpo game in the regular season, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the Wolves did beat the Vikings in the regional. They were without Omarion Hatch and an offensive linemen in their loss to Valpo, and Tyler Bush was starting his first game on varsity. It was 28-28 before City gave up a long td and then fumbled on their very next offensive play. I think Valpo and City will play in the regional and it will be very interesting to see what happens.

I agree, but honestly shocked to see you take Merrillville coming out of the north
-
I’ll take CG 28-14. No disrespect to the Irish, as they’re one of the best teams in the country and will steamroll their way to another state title, but for some reason I don’t see this game being as close as last year. Let’s hope I’m wrong and we get another classic.
-
Can’t speak for the rest, but in the Region, I expect Merrillville and Hanover to win big. Chesterton really disappointed me last week losing to a solid but unspectacular Crown Point team. If they were serious threats to Merrillville that game should’ve been a blowout. Chris Mullen is a stud and the Trojan defense is stingy but I’ll take the Pirates by 3 TDs. As for the other game, in my opinion Hanover has established themselves as a darkhorse in 3A north, and I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they made a run to the semi state. The competition hasn’t been great, but boasting the top scoring offense in 3A along with a top 5 scoring defense is certainly impressive. Calumet has a nice defense, but they haven’t played a team with even half the firepower Hanover has. I’ll take the Wildcats by 4 TDs.

So much for a fun one. Are the Pirates ready for CG? Possibly, but let’s see how the do with the likes of Lafayette Jeff and Penn or Elkhart first. Is Valpo’s season over? Clearly not, as this is just one game.
I’m fairy certain Merrillville would throttle Jeff and Elkhart if they were to play those teams. CG is on another level. No one is going to touch them. Valpo had a lot of uncharacteristic penalties and turnovers, they will be fine. They have a cupcake sectional and will likely get a rematch with Michigan City or maybe Mishawaka in the regional. They’re very well positioned for an extended post season run.
-
Dominating win for the Pirates. The balance they have on offense is hard to contain. Defense dominated tonight as well. Maybe this is the year they can make a run to LOS. Still think Valpo is a threat in 5A.

Can they not kick PAT’s? I noticed in last weeks box score they were converting 2 PT conversions when the game was out of hand.
Sitting in the Merrillville stands, apparently the kicker is hurt. That’s why the QB is doing the kickoffs too.

Justin Marshall takes the wildcat snap and goes about 60 yards to the house. 2pt good.
42-7 Merrillville
1:21 3Q

Lavarion Logan with his 4th TD on the day, again from a yard out. 2pt no good.
34-7 Pirates

Wherever he decides to play, I hope he chooses it because that’s where he wants to go and where he thinks he’ll be improved the most as a football player and man. I’ve known guys who went to places because of family/etc and it didn’t work out for them. Wishing this kid the best
