  1. The Way We Played The Game.....A True Story of One Team and the Dawning of American Football "Football in 1903 was vastly different from the slick spectacle we watch every Sunday afternoon on TV in the fall. It was a brutal, nonstop war fought by young men and boys on muddy high school and college fields across America. Bloody faces, broken bones, concussions and the shockingly high risk of death were the main attraction for hometown fans. The level of violence nearly got the sport banned in 1902, were it not for the intervention of President Teddy Roosevelt." High school kids scrimmaging the U of Michigan or U of Wisconsin teams....gamblers riding the team train to games and placing bets or pulling guns on each other on the sidelines...coaches recruiting men in their 20's to come play for the high school...this book is a fascinating look into the early days of high school football in America.
  2. I suspect you'll hear a lot more of that in the future.
  3. True that it might be a rule, it doesn't make it a good rule or even "right". Hypothetical...a kid grinds it out every day being a tackling dummy for his varsity team-mates only to be told, "hey...sit in the stands at Lucas Oil". I see zero issue with allowing that kid to stand in his uni on the sideline with his team-mates.
  4. Reitz sophomore heavy defense gave up about 30+ ppg.....40 ppg to teams not named Bosse, VL or Harrison.
  5. Reitz hung in there with the help of the 70+ flea flicker and an onside kick in the 2nd half and their kids, particularly the Seniors played hard....kind of a microcosm of their season, really....when these things were successful, they kept things competitive against better teams. That's not a great formula for success. Their wins the last couple of years have come by beating Harrison, Bosse, VL and Boonville.
  6. Agree on the sketchy aspect of this....and in rethinking my first, mistake riddled post, I would say that some combination of Reitz vs. Boonville/Harrison and Central vs. Harrison/Boonville is a likely scenario, with Jasper, Memorial and Northview in the opposite end of the draw...Central or Reitz having a shot at a simpler berth in the Sectional Final while the three best teams in Sectional 24 having to beat each other up in Rd's 1 and 2. Memorial vs Jasper in this Sectional final would be a great ballgame, IMHO.
  7. That would be great to see...betting it won't happen in the sectional final, however. My money is on one portion of the bracket being some combination of Reitz vs VL or Harrison and Central vs. whichever of those teams doesn't face Reitz. That'll leave someone in the remaining teams of Memorial, Boonville and Jasper with a bye and Jasper/Memorial happening somewhere in either Round 1 or 2.
  8. Apologies if this has already been posted....been saying this for awhile...don't look at deaths as the defining factor in decisions....the long term affects on heart, kidneys, lungs and other organs seems to be a big motivator in some of these decisions. Stinks for all of us!! https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/29633697/heart-condition-linked-covid-19-fuels-power-5-concern-season-viability
