Is there a buyout if he leaves before that?

My inside source tells me the buyout is all the Terra Villa pasta and garlic bread he can eat for the remainder of the contract length and 10 meatball calzones from Gerries.

@Donnie Baker the best pizza in west central Indiana is Overpass Pizza. The thin crust is ambrosia. We should eat there sometime!

  2. It blows my mind how quickly 11 years can pass, when one week of football work, against a worthy opponent, can feel like an eternity, just wishing the seconds away to reach that 7:00 kickoff.

One of the greatest blessings in my life happened when I ended up in the WRC. This little athletic conference binds our blue collar, hard-scrabble towns together. It’s a beautiful region of the Midwest that is Americana as apple pie. The football that’s played here is tough and physical, brought to you by long family lines, and friendly (at times hateful) rivalries. As it should be.

I can’t image a more beautiful setting for the Fall than the banks of the Wabash River in West-Central Indiana. Apple Festival, Little Italy, Hill Climb, Covered Bridge. Stroll through any of these and see 4 letter jackets of different WRC schools. What we share is special. You can’t find a better place to raise your kids.

I have no idea how it will turn out, but I’m very thankful to be a part of another high school football season in the WRC.

Biggest question for the Jackets is the line on both sides of the ball. Return almost everything in the skill positions. Ethan Turner is the guy for the full offseason, excited to see him throw it around in the fall.

Kids continued to fight and get better throughout the year. Give Kling credit, plus he is also doing a great job with working with the JH kids. I think you'll see a slight increase in the win total each year, and the incoming freshmen class group will be "the year" for us when they are seniors.  This season's W total just hinges on a lot of questions on the Line.

I knew Coach Kling back in the old days at USI. Great coach and also a great dude! No doubt success is on the horizon in Mitchell

    I’m taking this hard.

    As am I dude.

Hard for me to quantify the positive impact that studying him has had on my career. Not just the Air Raid offense, but his general approach to leading a team. Shoot, his general approach to life. He made it ok to be “different” as a football coach.

I really admired him and kind of had the pipe dream that I might meet him some day.

I too was at the game Donnie, just like WRC123. The Amish Christians scored on their final two possessions of the 2nd quarter after RP turnovers and again on the first possession of the 3rd quarter to make it a 42-18 game. #24 scored all of his offensive TDs in the first half. The Panthers played a really bad 3rd quarter and couldn't get the running clock until the 9 minute mark of the 4th quarter when #24 took an Amish pass at the goal line 100 yards on an INT return TD. That's when the JV offense and defense came in to finish the game. So, nothing really out of the ordinary for any team in a similar situation.

If anything the Panthers should be criticized for not finishing off the Amish early enough and letting them hang around.

Don’t understand the big deal. IHSAA has established the point in a game when mercy is appropriate. If the clock’s not running, pedal to the metal. Once the running clock starts, mercy should be shown by the winning team. It’s pretty black and white to me.

  6. I appreciate the IFCA and IHSAA working together to establish our mercy rule in conjunction with the new quarter rule.

Those rule changes have helped me, as a coach, manage games more effectively.
No hard feelings if I onside kick in the third quarter, up 28, and then dial up a TD pass to hopefully start the running clock.  No hard feelings if the other team plays their starters, pedal to the metal, and scores 60 in the first half.  It makes game decisions from both coaching staffs feel impersonal. Business is business.

I think Woody is doing a great disservice to a lot of other great pizza joints in the WRC.  To name a few:  Palucci’s in Cayuga, Overpass in Covington, Up the Creek across from TR state park, Paradise Pizza/Bowling in Clinton, Arnis in Pine Village, Blue and Gold Pizza in Veederburg.  The WRC may be the SEC of Indiana High School football, but it’s the ACC of pizza places.

Overpass is the best pizza in the WRC hands down. It’s not close.
I keep my ratings to WRC Pizza King establishments because I love the franchise and tradition.
If you’re looking for a good slice, check out Manolo’s on campus at U of I. Good pizza, but the empanadas are top shelf. The dessert empanadas are a must.

From the earliest days of this forum, TA NEVER allowed stuff to be posted from reliable sources. The policy here has ALWAYS been to share a link to something verifiable when talking about coaching moves. Please stick to that policy......thanks

Bingo. My reply was about just making sure no one was taking any cheap shots.

  9. From a coaching perspective, the IHSAA set the mercy rule at 35 points. As a team with the lead, why wouldn’t you keep playing until you reach the running clock? If mercy is the IHSAA’s expectation only after a team is winning by 35, why dial it down earlier than that? There are several advantages to a running clock for the winning team.

I think if any coach had an issue with the 35 point activation for mercy they would take it up the IHSAA.

Agreed. When Turkey Run was fighting to keep their program alive, the posts were about how proud we all were of the kids giving it their best. If you look at enrollment and roster, playing the games right now is a win. County officials and School Board gave them no help by going the route with most quarantine risk. (Not a statement about masks or COVID, just risk management on athletes staying in school to be eligible.)

Cheap shots take no guts.  Most every program in the conference have had their lean years too. Current players practice hard and do their best, respect them for loving the game enough to come out.

Nothing but respect for Attica Coaches and players doing their best to keep their football program alive. Also, the way they play, they don’t look like a team that dressed 15. Their level of play is much better.

This is the norm for the vast majority of participants, families and programs. I too have heard horror stories about travel, but they haven't come from anyone I've met or seen personally, so I just consider them as what they are, stories by those with an anti-travel agenda.

My daughters have played travel volleyball for years. The program they’re in now is coached by high school coaches in Illinois. They do an awesome job getting the girls ready for their high school seasons. Most of the coaches from other teams that I observe at tournaments also do a good job.

I will propose this question: How do schools improve coach retention ?

Some things that I think help:

    1. The longer you are at a school, the easier it is to fill positions with young guys interested in coaching who played in your system and live in the community. These guys are usually in for the long term. Bonus is they already know and believe in the culture.

    2. Don’t micro-manage your coaches. If you give them a job, let them do their thing.

    3. Take responsibility when you screw up, and apologize when you do (this goes a long way with players too)

    4. Give credit when and where it’s due.

    5. Don’t waste their time. Don’t have meetings when phone calls, texts, emails will do.

    6. As a head coach, don’t take your too seriously. You hear horror stories about certain HCs and their egos. I couldn’t coach for someone like that.

    7. Take over for some of the crappy tasks that no one wants to do.

    Hope this is helpful.

Correct.  Frankfort is not a "lily white" town or country community.  In fact the last count I saw were that Caucasians were a racial minority in Frankfort High School.

You’re correct about the high school. I’ll say this from personal observation, immigrants are not only some of the hardest working people I know, but also seem to appreciate things a lot of folks take for granted. In that regard maybe the future is bright for Frankfort?

I have raised multiple teenagers. Most "parental sacrifice" in Clinton county is working 60+ hours a week just to keep a roof over your family's head and food on the table.   Fancy schmancy personal trainers and athletic camps are a pipe dream.

The positive side would be the diversity of culture for those living in Frankfort?

You are still looking up at the all time champs.  We will all be worm food by the time Brutus catches up.

Sorry DT, but racking up wins against the local high school or boys club in the early part of last century is bogus questionable at best. I’m just hopeful to be around when the head to head record lead changes hands.
