Funny as a wrestling coach we figure out how to SEED a SECTIONAL and I’m pretty sure that is IHSAA sanctioned.

The fact the IHSAA won’t seed football sectionals is pure LAZINESS. A criteria could be set, just as it is in wrestling, and it would get accomplished and guess what?? It would be a helluva lot better than we have now. Would at least give SOME meaning to a good regular season.

You're right. I should have said they use Blind Draw in every TEAM sport.

Should we start a discussion about not having Wrestlebacks in the IHSAA Tournament? Or the lack of a true Team Wrestling Tournament sanctioned by the IHSAA?

    Actually, just the beginning.

Overall attendance would be better in a seeded tournament. The blind draw is costing athletic departments money. Irresponsible.

I think the IHSAA makes most of their revenue from tournament revenue. So they are hurting themselves.

  2. Whenever I go to a sporting event at Center Grove or Carmel, I always notice how poor their facilities have become. Thanks to DT, I now know that the reason that these 2 schools have fallen on hard times is due to poor visiting fans attendance at football games. So sad.

(p.s. It's sarcasm, people! They have fantastic facilities thanks to big fan support, corporate sponsors & solid tax bases.)

School A with 2000 Students (100 boys out for football) beats school B 4000 students (100 boys out for football) . Is there really a large difference here ?

Is there really a large difference here?

    Yes.

That's why classes are broken down by Enrollment in every sport, not by the number of kids participating in the sport.

    Penn 3,338 - 6th largest in state.

    NP - 961 - 111th largest in state, 46th largest in 4A football.

  4. Back Judge called Block in the Back penalty about 20 yards behind the ball on the hash when a Merrillville player accidentally ran into Valpo player from behind. Not sure if the Valpo guy purposefully slowed down to "draw the charge" but I think the Merrillville guy was just running downfield watching his teammate score & not trying to block at all.

If you are a Pirate fan, you think you got screwed.

If you a Viking fan, you say it was Offensive PI anyway.

  5. Uh-oh.

    Sep 20 - Greenfield-Central 67 Shelbyville 0

    Sep 27 - New Pal 68 Greenfield-Central 0

Oct 4 - Shelbyville at New Pal

Point differentials thru 6 weeks: New Pal 310-54, Shelbyville 7-365

If Shelbyville wins the coin toss, I suggest that they defer to basketball season.

Gotta wonder if any HS team before G-C has ever won a conference game by 67 & then lost a conference game by 68 in back-to-back weeks. Who's gonna look that up for us?

  6. Fun Fact: Kicker Jack Knight scored every point in Noblesville's 10-0 victory over FC last year.

The Millers kicked off the third quarter to Malieki Parks, who had a decent kick return until the ball was punched out from behind. Kicker Jack Knight picked the ball up at the 35 and sprinted down the far sideline to the end zone for a touchdown. Knight would send the point after kick through the uprights, giving Noblesville a 10-0 lead and what would turn out to be the final score.

“I’ve seen guys advance kickoffs before and run them in. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the kicker pick it up and run 30 yards like Bambi down the sideline,” said Roden on Knight’s touchdown on the opening kickoff of the third quarter. “He can run. He might be our fastest player,” continued Justin Roden on the speed of his kicker.

I predict FC gets the win on Friday 20-7.

I agree about Mike Gillin but I’d also throw Phil Mason in the mix.  He won a state title at Andrean and has done a terrific job turning around the Michigan City program.

We always said City was a sleeping giant if they found a top-notch coach. Well, not only did they do that but Mason has surrounded himself with a great group of veteran assistants.

That’s pretty cool!  I didn’t hear about that. I think this game has been overshadowed by 1 moment at the end of the game that left a sour taste in most people’s mouths...but all in all the game was a great one and Southport is a great program.

I live 15 minutes away & decided to catch this interesting game between a 3A powerhouse & a 6A program on the upswing. It was a really entertaining game-- big plays & hard hitting by both sides. Southport made a bunch of fantastic big plays in the passing game on critical 3rd & 4th downs which led to their victory. GS absolutely held their own against the big school & showed they have lots of talent too.

It was hot...the Cardinals led by 2 scores...I wanted to beat traffic...so I left before the late hit/flags/ejections. Wouldn't have known about any of that if it wasn't for the forum.

  9. Crew didn't ask Team B if they wanted the Game Clock to start on ready for play.

Same crew that mistakenly enforced a downfield holding penalty from the line of scrimmage on a 15yd gain apparently because there was a backward lateral on a reverse. (See other thread posted on 9/13.) The lateral occurred well before the holding. Instead of a 10yd penalty walkoff, Team B was pushed back 25 yards.

We have no rules where time is run off the clock. If the runner was down inbounds, why did the game clock start on the snap? The only reason would be if someone called a timeout after the play. The clock would be stopped to administer the penalty, and then would start on the Referee’s ready for play signal.

Head Ref started 0:25 Play Clock but did not wind the Game Clock...mistake by him. That explains it.

However, if Team A was prepared to snap right away, they could've still run a play even if the Game Clock started up.

  11. This also occurred in Friday's game (Zionsville at FC).

Final few seconds of 1st half, Team A has possession, Team A is out of timeouts. Ball carrier is tackled short of the 1st down marker inbounds. Clock is running. Just after the play ends, a flag is thrown & the clock is stopped with 0:02 left-- 15 yd Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty against Team A. Penalty is marked off. Game clock does not start until the ball is snapped. Therefore, Team A was able to run 1 more offensive play which they never would have been able to do without that penalty.

Was that situation handled properly? Are there any HS rules with a 10-second runoff or something similar?

Now?  They have a great QB and have great skill players....from my understanding they threw it 2 times vs Columbus north and then they opened it up vs GS throwing for almost 400 yards.

From my understanding...the Brevin Jefferson kid played in his first game of his high school career...and what a debut for 9 catches 221 yards.  Probably a kid who might start popping up on college recruiting boards if he keeps this up.

Whoa. 1st football game? I knew the name from hoops. Amazing!

TE #40 Munoz had a helluva game too with 2 TD including at least 3 fantastic catches.

Props to GS for their big crowd. I heard the Southport concession stand volunteers say that the GS fans were the NICEST they've ever encountered. And she said they were making 100 burgers for the GS team to enjoy on their bus ride home. Pretty cool.

Unlike NCAA, the NF rules do not provide for automatic ejection for a targeting foul. Ejection can be warranted if the foul is deemed “flagrant,” i.e., places the opponent at risk for serious injury. One of the examples of a foul that can be considered flagrant is helmet to helmet contact against a defenseless player. But it’s never automatic. It always comes down to the official’s judgment.

Thanks Bob. After my initial post, I went back to read more of the thread & saw posts saying the kid was ejected. My bad -- I posted without knowing the whole story.

I think Brady was definitely better D1 Qb prospect. However Southport kid can and will play different positions and I don't believe he is being recruited as a qb. I think both will do well at the college level.

Any word on the seriousness of his injury that caused him to leave game?

I happened to be standing right at the goal line when Lezon got hurt. He grabbed his hamstring right away & walked slowly to the bench with help. Hope it's not a serious hamstring injury. They've got some serious weapons & he has really nice skills with his arm & legs.

An offensive holding penalty is administered according to the “all but one rule,” which says that all penalties are enforced from the basic spot except one: a foul by the offense behind the basic spot. The penalty for that foul is enforced from the spot of the foul.

The basic spot depends on the type of play. If the foul occurs during a running play, the basic spot is the end of the run. If the foul occurs during a loose ball play, the basic spot is the previous spot. It gets tricky, though, because you can have more than one type of play during a down.

So, if the foul occurred either before or while the ball was loose during the backward pass, it occurred during a loose ball play and the basic spot is the previous spot, i.e., the 45, regardless of where on the field the foul occurred.

Ok, I think I understand. In this case, the penalty clearly occurred (& the flag was thrown) long after the backward pass. The ball carrier had gained 10+ yards when the holding occurred. So, in this case, the penalty should have been enforced from the spot of the foul/end of the run as they were the same.

That means that this crew was overthinking & mistakenly enforced the penalty from the previous spot because of the backward pass.

  15. Saw this tonight.1st down, Team A has ball on Team B's 45 yd line. QB hands ball to RB running left. RB makes a backward lateral to WR on a reverse. WR runs around right end & gains 15 yards to Team B 30 yd line. As the play is ending, a penalty flag is thrown also at the 30 yd line-- Offensive Holding is called against a receiver blocking downfield. After several minutes of conversation, the crew decided to mark off the 10 yard penalty with the spot of enforcement from Team B's 45 yd line (the line of scrimmage) instead of from Team B's 30 yd line (the spot of the foul & where the ball carrier was tackled).

Team A's coaching staff protested loudly but the crew held firm. Next play -- 1st & 20 from Team A 45 yd line. I think it should have been 1st & 5 from Team B's 40.So if the crew was correct, did the backward lateral (as opposed to a simple run play) have an impact on the spot of enforcement?

If the crew was correct, then I have to ask if the rule makes sense??? Let's say Team A has the ball on their own 20 yd line. On a run play, the ball carrier breaks a long run & scores. However, one of the offensive players blocking downfield is penalized for Offensive Holding at Team B's 10 yd line. To me, it makes sense for the spot of enforcement to be Team B's 10 yd line (1st & 10 at Team B's 20) & NOT the line of scrimmage (1st & 20 all the way back at Team A's 10).
