I am sorry, I have been going to these games from the time I can remember. I was at each of the three peat games, I was at the debacles to Warren, Carmel and BD. I have seen this program achieve success and lately the product on the field in the last four seasons is no where near the team that played Center Grove to a 12 point loss in the state finals. Penn with 3800 students should be able to produce talent across the board that can compete with an Indy based school year in an year out.

The blow outs to top Indy teams and now Carroll last year, when that game was at Home....not acceptable. Yes Penn is 8-1...yes they beat two top 10 5A teams and a New Prairie team that could make noise in 4A, but that is not what 6A programs should be patting themselves on the back about. Winning a weak conference title is not what you pat yourself on the back about. Competing year in and year out for Semi-State title games is where this program was at, and now if we win sectionals, which has only happened 1 time out of the last 5 or 6 seasons is unacceptable, we are actually surprised.

I know this thread isn't about Penn, and I am sorry this has kind of hijacked it.

Yeah, It doesn't help that you play a very less than typical 6a schedule.  Having only two on the schedule is not getting Penn ready for tournament play.

Don’t want to speak on his behalf but Penn has higher standards and the way in which they lost to Cathedral is foreshadowing and all too familiar to Penn fans when they run into central Indy powers.

"The way in which they lost to Cathedral" is the way most teams on their schedule lose to Cathedral.  It is going to take a special group of players to beat Cathedral on any given Friday.  I'm not sure the "higher standards" thing applies.  Penn was ahead of the curve for many years.  I just think many programs have caught up.  It is not that Penn is doing anything wrong.  How would those teams of old done if there was a success factor back in the glory days?

Right now, I think we need someone that is younger and more innovative on the offensive side of the ball.  Penn's issue right now is their lack of inspiration. Their D seems to be good year in and year out, recently their issue has been the Offense staying on the field. So, if a coaching change is not in the cards, then their needs to be a scheme change.

One things kids do not like at the high school level is getting beat up on play after play, I am all for going back to the traditional ground and pound trap style of offense. scrap the lateral zone runs that end in the backfield, north and south running plays that result in 3-4 yards per play. This will allow you to run play action more effectively and when you get later in the games you can lean in on the O-line because they have just been pounding the d-line all night. The beauty is you can run aggressive downhill plays from the gun or under center, you don't have to be a 22 or 32 formation to play a physical style of ball.

Maybe I'm missing something in translation, but Penn is 8-1 and their only loss is to Cathedral.  Last I checked, they are pretty good.  They are probably going to be in the sectional championship against Carroll.  I know Penn seemed to have a standing seat at the in the state finals back in the day, but they are still competitive.  If they beat Carroll in the final, they will have a great chance against whoever comes out of sectional 1.  The staff at Penn is doing fine.

    You would be wrong.

Under bylaws established by the IHSAA, its board of directors may designate a sport as a recognized sport if the following requirements are satisfied:

    • One-hundred fifty or more member schools representing a minimum of 40 schools from each district have each sponsored a full program in that sport, and have participated in that sport two consecutive years (there remains the very real possibility the rule could be lowered to 100 schools).

    • The sport has gone through the emerging sport process, and an updated emerging sport application is submitted to the board with the request for recognition.

    • Provided the prior requirements are satisfied, the board at its annual meeting may, by a majority vote, recognize the sport as a recognized sport.

Currently, there are 87 Indiana high schools that have boys volleyball programs, including three in Johnson County with Center Grove, Franklin and Whiteland.

There are 118 high schools that had at least one girl wrestling this past season.

Girls wrestling has a long road ahead before being considered a recognized sport or having an IHSAA sanctioned State Tournament. Congrats to her on the Conference win though, there aren't a lot of boy wrestlers small enough to wrestle at 113. Mostly freshmen.

Not sure where you have been, but it is closer to becoming an IHSAA sanctioned sport than you think.  It takes one girl to make a team for wrestling.  It is just around the corner.

Boys volleyball came in as an emerging sport at the same time as girls wrestling. Girls wrestling will get there first.

They are allowed to line up in a free kick formation (same as a kickoff). Put the ball on a tee and the receiving team has to be at least 10 yards from the ball. If the kick goes through the uprights they are awarded 3 points. It needs to happen near the end of a half. The team needs to have fair caught a kick. And they need to be close enough their kicker has a fighting chance to make it. It's very rare for all those items to line up at the same time.

Can the ball be moved to the middle of the field or to a hash? For example, the ball was caught on the left hash at the 40 yard line. Can that ball be positioned in the middle of the field for the free kick?  We practice this every Thursday night, but this is always a question for us.

Curious which model (and cost if you don't mind) you use?  I've seen the Dartmouth robot tackling drills on YouTube but I've always wondered if it was feasible at the HS level from a budget standpoint.

The MVP Sprint is the same model as the Dartmouth robot I believe.  I think that Rogers bought the rights or licensing of the product.  We purchased ours for 3450 each.  Allows us to full speed tackle every Tuesday and Wednesday.

  8. Rochester has now worn Guardian Caps for a season in practice from Monday through Thursday.  We are starting our second season.  We wore them all summer at team camp and scrimmages.  Here is all I can tell you about our experiences so far.  No concussions in practice.  We had one in a game situation last season. But on top of that, we do a tackling circuit two days a week.  We emphasize near hip/near shoulder, trailing the back hip, seeing what you hit, hawk and roll, sliding the head off to the side on in the hole type of contact.  We also do not tackle live in practice in our circuit or in team time.  We tackle a robotic MVP dummy from Rogers.

I cannot tell you that Guardian Caps help for sure, but I can tell you that our community, stakeholders, boosters, parents, and players appreciate that we have them.

Somebody asked why they are not used in games.  They are legal to use in games.  We have not gone to that yet.

Per the Warren Central Athletics website, they have 2 Assistant AD's, which is pretty substantial these days. I'd be curious to see how many 6A schools have an AD and 2 Asst. ADs. My best guess would be those large schools (Carmel, Penn, North Central, Ben Davis, Fishers, HSE) as the likeliest candidates, but shoot, up until like 6 years or so ago, Warsaw only had a single AD.

So I'm guessing that each AD also has a secretary.  That is sometimes like having 6 AD's on the job.  Many secretaries could do the job by themselves.

Warren Central's Mike Kirschner is also their Athletic Director

I could not imagine what this guys typical day looks like.  I am sure he has many assistant AD's, but he still must be a very organized man.

Actually, any of these guys doing both are very busy and organized men.

They already have 5 games listed on Harrell's site and they could fill the rest with Tipton (week 4), Western (6), SB Washington (8) and Indy Lutheran (9), who all have week's open.  I'd say that's a pretty decent schedule for pulling it together last minute!

I have a feeling Rochester is going to be on that schedule somewhere.

Maybe the Vikings can get Kokomo on their schedule when Logansport jumps to the hoosier.

  12. I am not sure if the Hoosier makes sense for the Berries but the Berries make sense for the Hoosier.  Western is 4A, Logansport is 4A, and West Lafayette is more 4A than both of them.  I know they are 3A.  Heights is a strong 3A roster wise and have physical kids that can handle 4A competition.  I think this makes really good sense for the Hoosier.  Does it make good sense for the Berries?  They might call it an even trade off with the exception of the loss of Jeff on their schedule.  Not sure how the Logan/Peru game figures in, but maybe Logan can keep Jeff on their schedule.

Next domino to fall in the Hoosier Conference, Northwestern to leave for the TRC with Cass?

A couple things will need to happen first.  I know that two teams have expressed interest in joining the TRC.  So not a done deal by any means.  If this Northwestern move would happen, it creates a different scenario for Cass.  Cass is taking over TV's schedule.  That hybrid TRC schedule rotates NM off of it every two years.  NM is the only other team currently thinking of accepting an invite to the HNAC.  NW could slide into that slot.  That would mean that Cass and NW would not be able to play each other for a two year stretch at different times.  Cass will be able to have one out of conference game scheduled. It must be game one.  This makes it impossible for Cass and NW to continue to play each other every year.  Northwestern's non conference game would be week two.  Cass will be able to maintain Pioneer as their game one.  It just adds a different twist.

Ok, what do you believe is the cause of Frankfort's football malaise over the last decade or so?

I believe its people like you listening to people like you! Cry me a river, poor Frankfort has it rough.  I am not sure that is a great argument anymore. Every community has fallen on hard times.  Let's take a look at your alma mater, Maconaquah, for instance.  Economically that area was on top of the world in the 80's with great athletes.  The base was booming, Square D was in full swing, GM and Chrysler were doing well, and farmers were struggling a little. The schools athletics were ok.  Nothing super special, but they were always competitive and produced some top athletes.  In the 90's the base starts a transition and GM and Chrysler start slowing down.  By the 2000's things start getting rough.  The base is closing, GM is a shadow of its former self, and Chrysler takes a dip.  Square D lays people of and eventually closes by 2019 or so.  But somehow a school goes from something like 4% free and reduced lunch to around 70% free and reduced and we don't hear any crying out of them!  Cass would be in a very similar situation.  There was no industry keeping those communities afloat or breeding new life into the area, and yet they keep chugging along and doing ok in sports.  I suppose you can bring up the higher Latino numbers in Frankforts area, but those numbers have risen at Logansport.  Yet they are not complaining! Their sports aren't dominating, but they are't lobbying for a move to a 1A conference either.

    Then again, maybe your right...

Since 2018 Frankfort has been playing either one of or both Clinton Central & Clinton Prairie.  Both are 1A schools in the HH.  The record this '4A' school with 60 players on the roster has against these two schools?  4-4.      They are 2-3 against Central and 2-1 against Prairie.  So much for the large roster size...................

So...join a smaller 1A and 2A conference and still be bottom feeders? At least they have an excuse now.  What are they going to blame if they make the change to the HH?  Socioeconomics? Really?  Frankfort is the only town feeling the crunch? Please Muda!!!  Just call a spade a spade.
