Indianapolis Public Schools is investing nearly $30 million over the next two years to give its teachers the largest pay raise in district history and make it one of the best paying school districts in the state.

By fall 2020, the second year of the new contract agreement, starting pay at IPS will be $47,800 — up from $40,000 just three years earlier. Veteran teachers will be able to make up to $90,000. The contract between the district and the Indianapolis Education Association, which collectively bargains on behalf of the district’s 1,900 teachers, was approved by the school board Tuesday.

Another $1.2 million will be invested in raising pay for non-teaching employees. All employee groups covered by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which include positions like custodians, bus drivers and food service workers, will receive raises of up to 7.4%. Nearly all of these groups also received a raise last year. For many, it was their first raise in more than a decade.

With these new contracts, IPS is making good on promises made to voters last year. Last November, voters approved two ballot measures to raise property taxes and provide the district with an additional $272 million over eight years. Of that, $52 million will go toward improving school security. The other $220 million is to be used for the district’s operating expenses, with the bulk of that money supposed to help the district raise teacher pay.

"We’re doing what we said we’d do with those dollars," said Superintendent Aleesia Johnson. "None of this would be possible without the support we got from the community during the referendum."

....

$90k is a good chunk of change for a government employee.   Wonder how that pay increase will increase student performance in the classroom?

Should all Indiana government school employees have the opportunity to get paid $90k a year?  From Cannelton to Carmel, from Westville to Washington?
