  1. What's new in this club
  2. Libertarian "turns" Republican. Announces bid for President 2020. https://www.yahoo.com/news/ex-massachusetts-governor-challenge-trump-gop-nod-140048696--election.html
  3. You seem to be implying that the level of illegal immigration has been unabated since the Reagan years, which obviously is not true. The question of whether (and if so, what) we need to do about the 11 million illegals already here -- most of whom have been here for quite awhile-- is a completely separate question from whether we need to be doing something new or different today from the (apparently fairly successful) things we have been doing over the last 30 years to mitigate or limit further illegal immigration. Or, even if we do decide we do need to do something new or different, whether building "The Wall" (however that is being redefined this particular week/day/hour/minute by the President) is the right thing to do to achieve that goal. The notion that, because some Democrats voted in past years to add or upgrade fencing along some parts of the border, current Democrats are being hypocritical not to support the President's undefined, amorphous Wall, is akin to saying that all Republicans who today don't support the Dreamers Act are hypocrites, because many Republicans supported the Reagan era "amnesty" for illegals.
  4. My guess is that one of the first witnesses to be called to testify against the President will be ... Donald J. Trump. https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/430215-trump-says-he-didnt-need-to-declare-emergency-but-wanted-faster FTA: "I want to do it faster. I could do the wall over a longer period of time. I didn't need to do this, but I'd rather do it much faster," Trump said during a press conference at the Rose Garden in the White House.
  5. The bogus "national emergency" is also more ammo for the impeachment crowd.
  6. I've wondered this since it was announced. Logistically, how good of a fit is Long Island, tax breaks/reduced property costs or not? I'm sure with Amazon pulling the plug there are already some big winners and big losers with regards to property sales.
  7. Indiana finally has its first national park: https://www.indystar.com/story/news/2019/02/15/indiana-dunes-becomes-national-park-after-century-long-effort/2882357002/ Hmm. It will interesting to see what changes will be made to the National Lakeshore property. It currently is not one contiguous area, but scattered among several parcels of land in northwest Indiana. Kind of like the Hoosier National Forest in the southern part of the state.
  8. Simply opinions at this time, but I have wondered ever since the news on this broke if this really happened as Mr. Smollett says it did. Why did he still have the noose around his neck later when the cops arrived? Why are these men clearly black when he says his attackers were white and knew the men in the picture were his attackers because "he was there". Why didn't he give his phone up when the cops wanted it to check his story? Why, when he did give records or his phone, did I read some items were redacted? Why was he able to sing on stage so soon after the attack with bruised or broken ribs? And was he really going to be written off his show? Smells a little fishy to SF...... https://www.tmz.com/2019/02/15/jussie-smollett-suspects-arrested-battery-nigerian-brothers-empire-extras-actors/ Police have now arrested 2 men in the Jussie Smollett investigation -- 2 men with ties to "Empire" -- and TMZ has learned they were booked for battery. The men are brothers from Nigeria named Olabinjo and Abimbola Osundairo, and Chicago cops are now calling them "potential suspects" ... as opposed to persons of interest. We know it was their home cops raided Wednesday and seized a long list of potential evidence ... including several bottles of bleach. As we reported ... cops picked up Ola and Abel, their nicknames, on Wednesday night at O'Hare Airport. A Chicago law enforcement source tells us the next step may be a lineup in which Jussie will be asked to identify the culprits. This raises a potential problem because, as we first reported, Jussie initially said his attackers were white and yelled "MAGA country." The Osundairos, from Nigeria, just don't fit that profile. As you know, Jussie has stated the men in the dark, grainy image released last month are definitely his attackers. Police are not confirming the Osundairo brothers are the men in that photo. Ola played a prison inmate on season 2 of "Empire." It's unclear exactly how well they know Jussie, but we know Jussie follows their joint Instagram account. Abel also says he's worked on "Empire." Both brothers describe themselves online as actors and models. https://www.cnn.com/2019/02/15/entertainment/jussie-smollett-suspects/index.html (CNN)Two men have been arrested in connection to an attack reported by "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett, the Chicago Police Department said Friday. The men arrested were the same men that police previously said were being viewed as "potential suspects," according to Tom Ahern, Chicago police communications deputy director. The men, who police said were arrested Wednesday, have not been charged. Earlier Friday, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said two Nigerian brothers were beingtreated as "potential suspects" and that detectives had "probable cause that they may have been involved in an alleged crime." Police did not say at that time precisely what the brothers were accused of or what the alleged crime might have been. Smollett, one of the stars of "Empire," told authorities he was attacked early January 29 by two men who lobbed "racial and homophobic slurs" at him. After a brief struggle, both men ran away, and Smollett told police that one attacker had allegedly put a rope around his neck and poured an unknown chemical substance on him. "Interrogations will resume today with the two individuals and their attorney," Guglielmi said in Friday's statement. "While we haven't found any video documenting the alleged attack, there is also no evidence to say that this is a hoax." "The alleged victim is being cooperative at this time and continues to be treated as a victim, not a suspect," he added. Police said Thursday they were questioning the two men after meeting them at Chicago O'Hare International Airport Wednesday night, but they were not considered suspects at that time. Their apartment was searched by police earlier this week. One of the brothers has appeared on the show "Empire," according to police. Authorities previously released surveillance images of two silhouetted figures in the area of the attack, who they said were wanted for questioning.
  9. You also have to consider that location where Amazon was going, the same people that protested this move are the same ilk (congressional district) that elected her.....
  10. While I appreciate her general fervor, she needs to be careful that she's not reading her own press releases.
  11. Having friends (clients) in the Empire state particularly in NYC I find them on both sides of the debate. Bottom line, this company was planning on using the tax breaks (which were honestly a little too much) to upgrade an extremely blighted property in an extremely blighted section of the town in return for having an HQ in NYC. I try to consider the source(s). Amazon wants to produce a product (fulfillment and transportation) at the lowest cost it can, so it will lean that way and did. Whereas AOC and her side of anti-corporate protesters see Amazon coming in as a bully. In the end, those 25,000 jobs will go elsewhere and the added state and local revenues from the corporate profits and employee withholding will as well, and that section in Long Island City will remain a defunct piece of decay in a dying state already losing revenue paying companies......
  12. Trump Wants To Raid an Asset Forfeiture Black-Box Fund To Build His Border Wall: http://reason.com/blog/2019/02/15/the-asset-forfeiture-fund-trump-wants-to In response to public outrage, the IRS announced in 2014 it was changing its asset forfeiture policies to only pursue cases where there is other evidence of criminal activity. The IRS has previously released some limited data on structuring cases to the Institute for Justice, which leads them to believe the Treasury Department is intentionally stonewalling them. "We know that they have this information, and we know that they can give it up, but they don't want to give us the entire database," says Jennifer McDonald, a senior research analyst at the Institute for Justice, "which leads us to believe that there is something they don't want us to know about these funds." Mr. Trump stealing money from a fund of stolen money/assets. Beautiful.
  13. I has always been a supporter of a flat tax - for reasons like this, not that I won't miss looking for an extra deduction or 2........Again, according to my Turbotax report at the end we did have a 3% decrease in tax liability this year so I got that going for me.
  14. I wasn't looking at it from a W2/1099 perspective, but more from the standpoint that I don't think it's going to move the needle unless the last of my charitable stuff, Goodwill, kicks me over that $24,000 floor. It's going to be a lot like tracking medical expenses for me in the past as I normally couldn't get past that 7.5% of AGI ... which I guess is actually a silver lining in a different way.
  15. In her eyes, she struck a blow to corporate America, so it's a win. In reality NY is off the hook for the incentives, so it's a win for NY. In the long run, the area is out of 25K jobs. I'm still not convinced this was a good deal for who got it.
  16. Got to love AOC celebrating pushing Amazon out of NYC....who needs 25K+ jobs in their area with an average income of $150K/year?? https://www.nbcnews.com/business/business-news/amazon-s-valentine-s-day-breakup-n-y-may-cause-n971841
  17. Same here. I haven't done any real programming in COBOL for several years, but it is like riding a bicycle.

    Tax Cut Implications

I use a spreadsheet as well. You need to read closer, volunteer coaching isn't a W2 position. You might still be able to deduct. I can still deduct 1099 mileage. If you're a sole proprietor, you can still deduct as well.
  19. I cannot get passed this. To me this is a HUGE issue in the wall talk.
  20. There's a lot of items that used to make the green numbers spin in TurboTax that don't this year. Used to be that, once I got done entering in the wages section and taxes withheld, I was at a little green and then, once I started putting in all of the charitable deductions, mortgage interest, property taxes, and education stuff, that sucker would spin. This year, I'm almost done with all of the charitable stuff and it's still just staring at me unmoving. Kind of a bummer when you put in a single , nearly five-figure donation, and that number doesn't move. I used to track my mileage for volunteer coaching, even created a spreadsheet so all I had to do was enter in the number of practices and game locations and it would automatically crack out my mileage for me. Probably not going to need that anymore. One thing I'm curious about will be if ancillary charitable deductions will be impacted moving forward. I expect that won't be the case with folks' core charities, but I wonder if there would be a potential drop in charitable giving or, at minimum, a change in the timing ... e.g., give twice as much every other year and nothing in the intervening years to be able to get an advantage that would be lost by giving a regular amount each year.
  21. Ironically, the easy one would be over immigration again. Fertility rate, tied to replacement, has sustainability right around 2.1. The US is below that, so without immigration, US population will begin to shrink. The next president could say it's a national crisis, without even worrying about Constitutional gun crisis, and like Ronald Reagan said to Mr. Gorbachev, "Tear down this wall."
  22. Those things weighed a ton. I remember when we switched those things out for the 3180s. It was a modularized contraption that had four components to it and you could get them repaired pretty quickly without needing a repairman or any real knowledge about hardware. COBOL is my unemployment/retirement golden ticket. With the vast majority of COBOL programmers dying off and the vast number of systems that still are running it, I could always do a little COBOL consulting work if things ever get thin in retirement.
  23. There is no one that is surprised. And if you still believe that he is, then there's not much to a discussion about this because it's pretty clear that this is about ego and not national security. The fact that his claims about drug implications don't fit with reality also indicates that he's not approaching it logically. Similarly, the fact that some 400 people just tunneled under a stretch of existing wall shows even more disconnect from reality. Should Trump ever get out of the courts to complete his wall, it's likely that it might be studied along with other ill-advised structures like the Maginot Line. As for the graph, correlation does not specifically mean causality. A much more likely explanation for decrease is tied to an increase in Mexico's economy, especially as more US jobs went further south, as well as a drop in Mexico's fertility rates which has it right above the sustainability level sans immigration. Less competition for jobs in Mexico, better jobs in Mexico, and a better economy in Mexico than in the 20th century are all contributing factors to a lowered rate. BTW, you do realize that a growing issue for illegal immigration isn't border crossings, but instead overstayed visas? In 2016-2017, almost two-thirds of undocumenteds came with a visa and overstayed while just a bit over a third came from border crossings. For the last seven years, overstays have outpaced illegal crossings.
  24. I am more of a donkey guy anyways most consider it a jackass
  25. You do know that also corresponds to last great recession, which foxbat previously mentioned? It was economics, not a wall, that caused the reduction in apprehensions.
