Did Mitch Daniels ruin education in Indiana, or save it?

Quote

It’s been a headline-making decade for Purdue University thanks, in no small part, to outgoing President Mitch Daniels.

It started even before he was hired, with the rumors. Two days before his hiring was confirmed, the Lafayette Journal & Courier – the local newspaper – ran this question across their front page:

“Is Mitch Daniels the next Purdue president?”

Under a large photo of a screen-printing shop making Mitch-themed shirts and “below the fold” – newspaper parlance for the bottom half of the page – was this sub-headline:

“A slam-dunk – or a mistake?”

A decade and many, many headlines later, it’s still unclear what Daniels’ legacy in West Lafayette will be, even as his final days on campus approach. Classes for the upcoming semester, his last at the helm, start Monday. It’s expected that approximately 38,000 undergraduate students will join him – a 25% increase in undergraduate enrollment from the fall semester before Daniels arrived.

...

So, did Daniels raise the profile of one of the nation’s top engineering schools, along with his own, or did he compromise its high standards with risky new ventures? Much like his tenure as governor, the answer probably depends on your priorities, your position within the university and, at least in part, on your politics.

I know a number of long-term, non-teaching faculty employees at Purdue.  The vast majority have less than kind words to say about Mr. Daniel's tenure.  His policy of no tuition increases while President did not come without a cost to them, their families, and some of their colleagues.

As far as public school education, I believe most teachers that are still around would say that he and Daniels ruined K-12 education as we knew it.  Suellen fought as long as she could.  The other supers did, too.

Should have said Daniels and Bennett.
