Words can not describe how angry this makes me as a teacher and a coach. I know that in our court system you are innocent until proven guilty, but man this looks really bad to try and wipe your phone completely. On top of that I can't believe the school board would still allow a relative of his to vote for his termination. Just reading all the stories about this makes me want to take a shower.

At the youth level, we talk about that reliance too, but also about the fact that, especially in football, if you aren't doing your job, the chance that someone else gets hurt goes up dramatically.

One of the Key reasons that I love this game so much.  It is so on topic for the game itself, but they are life lessons as well. Sure you don't see as much group discipline in the real world (unless its in a Team aspect like the military) but the lessons are there and if you can get them to buy in with that Team over Me mentality it will go a very long way in the future.

Fumbles we will send the guilty party to do 10 pushups, or short jog to the baseball field, which is about 200 yards away or so.   Dropped pass in practice 10 pushups.

Jump off sides we typically give a verbal warning, happens again during team offense session, then offense will do some Up Downs.

Team Sled however, different story:  If the team doesn't all clap, if one of the bags is unmanned, when they run up to the drill, or if anyone jumps off side will be team up downs.

If the player rolls the wrong way exiting the 5 man sled or "holds" the bag, they will have to do 10 up downs to the side individually.

we believe in team sled for 2 purposes, pad levels but mostly for team discipline, we rely on discipline to run our system and this is vital part of it.

I know that I am not the only one in here that has spent time in the Armed Forces, but I can tell you that they have some interesting ways of getting something out of nothing with team and individual discipline. I for one think that team discipline is huge for sports like football, because it teaches players that they need to rely on the 10 other players on the field, or even those who are giving the first team looks in practice on Wednesday. In the military we stressed that no matter what job you have you are essential to the overall mission. In football no matter what role you have on the team you are essential to team success.

I would have to agree that words really can't do justice. This man instilled so many qualities into my life and all of those qualities helped mold me into the man I am today. it was an absolute honor to play for this man on and off the field and I have so much respect for him and his family.

The X's and O's are just a small portion in what you get with Coach Mannering. At the time of playing for him you think all you talk about is football, but looking back at it now, the structure I lead in life, the work ethic I live by, it all comes from one thing and that is the Lewis Cass Football Program. I am so blessed that he built that program. I thought back then he was just making me a better athlete, which he was, but all in all that was just a tiny detail. These traits he imprinted onto me in my young age are the reasons for success in my everyday life. He is one reason I hold my head high in times of defeat. He is one reason I don't quit. He is one reason I remain loyal to everything I believe in and do. He is one Reason I present myself Proper. That program really worked on me without me even realizing.

When a Coach can have that kind of affect on someone without even trying, you know that it comes natural and it says a lot about someones character. He isn't just a good coach he is a fantastic mentor at school and in the community. He never really had to preach on what we needed to be like or how we needed to act. He just had an expectation. When you can get through to kids without beating something into their head or without even bringing the topic up you have something special. He is a hell of a man. He is a hell of a coach. He is a Hell of a role model.

With all that being said I hope Coach enjoys his Retirement it is well deserved. I speak on behalf of all players from Lewis Cass who were fortunate enough to play for you. Thank you for all you have done and we all cherish every second that we had as a King! We wish you the best.

Well said... Does anyone else read through this topic and feel like we are honoring someone who has just passed away? Lol  It is really awesome to see confirmation into what Cass alumni already know to be true.

  5. I don't think words can do justice what it mean't to play for him. I know personally I owe an awful lot to him. I read in today's Kokomo Tribune that from 2003 to 2008 his record was 67-10 during that time and I truly believe that you can credit a lot of that to him being a "player coach" so of our teams then were not the most athletic , or biggest teams but we would run through a brick wall for Coach Mannering. I wish he would have gotten his title that he deserves. I will always be proud to be a King and that stems from the pride he took in Lewis Cass. I hope retirement from the game treats him well.

Lewis Cass owes Coach Phillips a big thank you!  Cass may be waiting to February because of no teaching opening created by the resignation.  This will be an interesting hire.  All the old Cass football faithful will be watching closely.  Hopefully there will be some quality candidates.

You are correct sir on all levels of this statement. He was able to fill a massive void left by the departure of Mannering and he had success. Hopefully the next coach can keep the Cass tradition alive and well.

Coach Phillips has been retired from teaching for a long while.  He has done an exceptional job at Cass and I expect he is already headed to Florida.  Good for him.  With him leaving however it does not open up any positions in the school so I am not sure how quick this position will be filled.

just saw it posted on the ihsaa website.

From what I saw on the ihsaa website they don't seem to be in a super big hurry to fill the position. Posting is until February from what I saw.

This could be a really good job for the right person. Community loves football. Return the Johnson kid (move in from Winimac not sure first name) and Meister plus the Moss kid on the line. Other than that I can't think of anyone else I saw play this year that is going to help the Kings win. Cass needs to look for a HC with some experience who has been through some lean times and knows how to handle them, because they are on the horizon. Also need someone who is going to teach at Cass and be invested in the community on a daily basis. Just my 2 centavos.

A Cass Guy so to speak

Ask the IFCA.  They are the ones that selected him.

Did either of one of them win back to back State Championships?

I was just asking a question. Because I actually want to know.  It was not an attack on him... winning two titles that's hard at any class and good for him being selected on this honor. I still want to know how the numbers match up.
