I agree.  That’s why I suggested cutting back the number of required conference games in the NCC to free up more openings for non-conference opponents.  That is more realistic than my proposal to take the five western schools of the NCC and start a new conference with the addition of West Lafayette.

So you are saying the Four Big Lafayette schools plus Logansport and Kokomo? That would make for an interesting league. Would you add anyone else to that?

So awesome. Long story short. I was watching the entire game up until roughly 2-3 minutes to go. Chatted w a friend. We both were saying we hoped he’d have another chance in his athletic career to “redeem” himself. Come home. Read the recap here. Had to text them the FANTASTIC news. What a clutch kick. What a great game.

I saw a video from a fan in the stadium and hearing LOS erupt when he hit that field goal brought goose bumps.

This season was full of ups and downs, but I would say being able to get a full season in and only having four kids get quarantined the whole season.  It really was as high stress but super rewarding season. I am very happy to have been able to coach this year.

  3. As a coach I have to say that I held my breath from July until last Saturday and now that I can actually breath and look at what the state and all the kids that play were able to accomplish. It feels good knowing we were able to set a standard for athletics in this state. I do hope it continues with the winter and spring sports as well. With everything going on this little bit of normal was great to have.

Does anyone else see that this is a problem?  We have the same 4 champions in 6A and P/P are over represented in State Titles compared to the number of P/P schools in the state.  If you remove the Big 4 in 6A and all P/P from State Title leaders, here is your list:

    Sheridan 9

    Penn 5

    Hobart 4

    Jimtown 4

    Tri-West 4

    Franklin Central 4

No public school under 6A has been able to maintain consistent dominance in any level like the P/P schools and the Big 4 in 6A.  This is a problem that needs addressed.  I think the answer is moving up those P/P schools from 3A-5A into 6A and 1A-2A into 4A.  Because I think Cathedral or Roncalli would have had a chance to win 6A and Luers could have beat Hobart in 4A.  Why can't the P/P schools "get better" instead of putting the blame on public schools?  It's not like Peru can just reload with kids every year because they have minimal access to kids because of their location whereas Concordia has probably 10x the access to kids compared to Peru.

I don't know.... I just think there's a problem with competitive balance when we have the same teams winning over and over again.  It comes to a point where it's not about the whole "get better, quit complaining, fix your feeder program" and it's time to take a real look at how to create some competitive balance

I think that this topic won't go away anytime soon, but a few other threads on here talk multiplier or seeding, in all honesty I feel like we need to get to a spot where the conference means more. Actually having to qualify to the state tournament rather than everyone gets a shot. That's my take but not I will sit back and listen to why I am dumb for that... At least I didn't say all P/P schools should be in their own class.

Actually, it has a great story behind it.  What we call FrankFORT was named in honor of FrankFURT in Germany. The Hot Dog moniker generally evolved.

Weirder yet is the Logansport Berries.  They adopted Felix the Cat, an anthropomorphic black cat with white eyes, a black body, and a giant grin in 1926.  Incidentally, Felix is from London, England.

I did a research project in an Indiana History class in college about how this came to be. Not sure how many know this about Logansport, but they used to be the Red Devils. The religious leaders in the town hated that so when they built the new school they renamed the team to Berries because where they built the school they removed a Loganberry patch.  Felix became a thing when the coach brought in a stuffed Felix cat and they took it out to the court and it began a win streak for them.

No love for the Madison-Grant Argylls? Only school in the country, high school or college, to use that moniker.

Rock on to the fighting socks!

Around my original area we used to have the Star City Stars, Burnettsville Bees, Buffalo Bison, Bunker Hill Minutemen, Chili Polar Bears, Lincoln Railsplitters, Idaville Green Streaks, and the Twelve Mile Milers.

Some old favorites are the Cory Apple Boys, Epsom Salts, Farmersburg Plowboys, Goldsmith Gold Bugs, Huntingburg Happy Hunters, Pimento Peppers, Raleigh Sir Walters, Rosedale Hot Shots, St. Paul Blasters, Smithville Skibos (???), Spencer Cops, Summitville Goblins, Swayzee Speedkings, Tippecanoe Police Dogs, West Baden Sprudels (???), and the White River Little Giants.

https://fliphtml5.com/bumg/hobg This is a very comprehensive list of former and current nicknames.

The Chili Polar Bears is amazing.

And on the PC bandwagon Lewis Cass home of the Kings (the only Kings in the state)

It’s all good.  I understand the need for a level playing field.  But, I also realize sometimes life ain’t fair.   Ultimately, everything is cyclical and the ship will be righted as I can recall the days when Pioneer and even Caston were easy outs in league play while Frontier and to a lesser extent, North White were top dogs.

It is hard to think of a time where Pioneer wasn't good at football. I believe that this is year 25 of having a winning record.

Title IX will stop 8 man football in Indiana.  In order for the IHSAA to sanction 8 man football in Indiana they would have to sanction another girls sport.  The only one that is close is women’s wrestling to being a sanctioned sports.

Bring in field hockey for a new girls sport, yeah it takes away from soccer and volleyball, but if the worry is making sure we have enough sports that is one that could be used.

I do believe whoever wins Pioneer/Bremen and NJ/Winamac their season ends in regionals. Andrean and LCC will be too much.

I terms of both match up's I wouldn't count the winner of either of these games out. Andrean is tough team and either match up will make for a really fun football game. Don't be scared of the name LCC again solid team, but it's not the same LCC team from last year. The QB is a stud no doubt, but they are very beatable.

With Andrean, Pioneer, Eastside, Luers (forget their record) & Fairfield, plus the teams in their own sectional, I'd say there are a lot of minefields to cross to get to state from the 2A North semistate.  I'd take them one at a time for now.

It seems like this season who ever comes out of the North may take 2A state this year.

Also something to think about, if you don't like the state of your program or how it's being ran, get involved and volunteer your time to be a part of the solution as opposed to part of the problem.  I don't know anything about this program but I guarantee these coaches spend a lot of time and effort away from their own families to try and instill, not only football lessons but , more importantly, life lessons into these young men.  Everyone who is not in the locker room and on the practice field wants to be critical of what's going on and they don't take the time to do anything about it, they just sit behind a computer screen and complain about how other people are doing things.  I'v been coaching a long time and have been a part of some pretty successful teams and I have also been a part of some not-so-successful teams, if you are only looking at the almighty win.  But, I will guarantee you one thing, these young men were better people because of it, and that I can live with.  So, you must first determine what success means, I truly believe learning respect, accountability, teamwork, discipline, and selflessness is far more important than any win you can put on a scoreboard.  Don't be an armchair quarterback, be a part of the solution or continue to be part of the problem, the choice is yours.

I feel like not many people are big on that. They are quick to point out the problem, but would rather point it out and complain rather than help be part of the solution. I coached at a school this season that was like that. It's hard because they don't get that we on staff are putting in the time and effort.
