Impressive!  Piggybacking crazy stats, I was told local prep coverage suggested that Hobart scored five defensive touchdowns last week.  Can anyone confirm and is this some kind of a record?  Thanks!

I can confirm that Hobart did indeed score 5 defensive touchdowns last week, no clue as to whether that’s a record or not.

What do you count as the north because Carmel has represented the north in 6A more than any other team so you can't exclude them. There are also HCC teams that play in the north so not sure how you can exclude them either.

I don’t consider Indy and its suburbs to be in the north. Yes, it’s a border case, but most of those schools play in the South and the only reason some play in the North is to make the tournament work.

If Chesterton beats Elkhart I would agree with this in 6A. I don't see it happening, but you never know.

I disagree on the Merrillville point. Jeff hasn't beat a quality team this year and Merrillville having been beaten pretty badly by 3A Chatard doesn't make me love them in the rest of the tournament. If they can't beat Chatard they have a long way to go before they'll be able to compete with the big boys of 6A.

Hobart and Andrean have a great shot at representing the region in the state finals, much more so than Chesterton and Merrillville.

Not many people saw them beating Penn, but they did, I think the game this week will be pretty good. As for the other point, Chatard, per Sagarin, is the 7th best team in the state overall, it doesn’t matter that they’re in 3A. I would also dispute that they lost “pretty badly” to Chatard. And by the “big boys of 6A” who do you mean, the MIC and the top of the HCC? I said the northern half of the state, no one is talking about those teams.

    6A: Jeff @ Merrillville

    Chesterton @ Elkhart

    5A: Valpo @ La Porte

    4A: Lowell @ Hobart

    3A: Calumet @ Hanover Central

    2A: Rensselaer @ Andrean

Some decent games on paper. I’m most excited for the Jeff/Mville game. Good for the 3A game where one program will win their first sectional title. Really rooting for Calumet and Coach Good in that one.

Exciting times for the region. If Chesterton and Merrillville win I think that’s a big statement for the quality region football compared to the rest of the northern half of the state. I picked Hanover before the tournament started but now I must agree that seeing Calumet pull this out would be great. I remember playing there when I was at Andrean, and a kid on their team broke his leg horribly because of the wretched field conditions. I saw last week they’ve got turf now. Coach Good has done a tremendous job with that program and the school is clearly supporting him. Hoping all these teams stay safe and healthy this week.

But wouldn't more high schools provide more athletic opportunities for children?  Or should the mega schools like Carmel,  Ben Davis, etc.  somehow field two varsity-level football squads?  Surely they have the enrollment and talent depth to support such a venture.

Perhaps, you might get some kids to come out for sports they otherwise wouldn’t have, but I doubt it’d be a drastic increase, some kids just don’t have interest in sports. I would also counter that by breaking up a large school, you could just as easily be taking away athletic opportunities (in terms of being competitive, etc) from kids, as well as other opportunities outside of sports for kids who don’t even play. And trying to nerf the MIC teams by splitting their teams in half is a pretty ridiculous suggestion if you ask me.

  6. Well, first I doubt if a school wasn’t competing in a higher class in sports that just by breaking into smaller schools they’d be competitive. Second, we’ve seen Elkhart and soon Hammond consolidate, and I’d expect we’ll continue to see consolidations in the next few years. The larger the tax base the better the school so there’s no reason for these schools to break up just for an attempt at better athletic success.

I believe this Covid experience will cause coaches, ADs and admins to think more insular and look for ways to minimize travel as much as possible.  This could lead to more conferences looking to add schools to get to a full round robin schedule and eliminate the need to schedule non con opponents, regardless of location.

The SAC and the SIAC are the new model for conference structure going forward.

This would be an excellent time for Elkhart and Penn to take another shot at Duneland Conference membership.  The NLC would also be wise to look for 2 more schools to get to 10.

The Northwest Crossroads can get to 10 by adding Morton, Hammond Central, EC Central and Gary West Side.

The NIC will be at 11 if Elkhart and Penn leave.

Why would covid make teams want to do this? Also, would these suggestions actually limit travel? For example, the DAC already spans 3 counties, I highly doubt they’ll want to add another county and a whole other time zone. Those teams coming to the NCC wouldn’t decrease travel for the teams in the conference, as well as adding nothing in terms of competition while taking away non-conference games. Don’t see the sense in teams trying to get to closed conferences just because of covid.
