I disagree. The season would start after signing day. Any D1 kid would likely be told to skip the season, or work to get those kids on campus early. I am sure a few of those kids were actually planning to be on campus for the 2nd semester. There may even be FCS schools, and D2 schools doing the same; especially with many of them moving their seasons to the Spring already.

No D-1 kid would be told by his college not to play his senior year...I-man........He would probably be redshirted.....

And we're talking about very few players. Not even 1%.......If they CHOSE not to play it would be their choice.  That's fair./

As of now, a lot of kids wont have the choice in 2020.

The spring kids got screwed already.  You can't do it.  I disagree with their decision and feel bad for kids BUT YOU CAN NOT LET 20% OF TEAMS LET WHAT HAPPENS TO REST!!!!!!

The IHSAA most certainly CAN make a chance for 100%...........and everyone plays in the spring....spring sports and football.  Nobody gets screwed..

If Marion County cancels, what is that...27 schools.....?

You REALLY dont think the IHSAA moves the season to the spring if Marion County cant go?

I think the IHSAA is choosing to let their individual members decide what's best for them. As it should be.

While states like Illinois chose to make a public health decision for all their members....and let everyone play in the spring.

    There's still time.

Sorry they're missing out. No need to make the rest of the State suffer because of a few.

Moving football to the spring would not be suffering....  There's no downside

Having the season cancelled in mid-September due to a surge in virus cases would be suffering....

If they keep sports going and schools open. Basketball and wrestling won't be happening.

We almost certainly cant have contact sports indoors until we have an answer for the virus.............Coaches, refs, fans are all at risk...

Its just this year's reality.......We havent had open schools in 5 months....we dont know what's about to hit us/

A family unit shouldn’t have to socially distance.  If Jimmy’s Mom, Dad, and baby sister want to come they shouldn’t have to spread out.  I don’t see there being an issue allowing each athlete 2-4 “family” unit members depending on the size of team/stadium/ etc

Everybody would have to distance or nobody would......You wouldnt know who was who.

Illnois is the last state I want to see indiana follow in anything

No, Illinois is the first state you want to follow concerning the virus because of where they are next to us.  Conditions there would be similar to conditions here.

You wouldnt want to follow what Alaska or Maine are doing.

We WOULD want to look at  what Illinois is doing..

    ...as an option...

Then we're just going to continue this Covid charade until a vaccine is developed. If it was up to me, the federal government would mandatorily test the entire country. They should have done this months ago and it would have saved congress from having to pass several of these trillion dollar relief packages. Anyone testing positive is then quarantined. If they want to put up a fight, they can then be tried with a felony after their quarantine is finished. We need to get back to normal, but what we're doing isn't working.

    Preach.

Students should have priority over family. Schools should make effort to have the students included first.

How would you handle the 'student section'?

Can't disagree with this enough.   Ihsaa has said they expect teams to sit out but football will go.

    That's what they say now.....

They also expected to play the basketball state tournament last year...remember.? .They had plans for how to do it.. Structure. Rules for fans and coaches.  Media and players.

    ..and then what happened...?

You really seriously believe that?  That no one will play if Marion County doesn't play part?  I can tell you with 100% certainty that the rest of the state can and will play without Marion County.  The only way it doesn't happen is if the IHSAA does a 180 on it's stance about leaving it up to the school jurisdictions to determine if they want to play or not.  Actually it might be refreshing to have the Mega schools out of the way for a season LOL.

No, T-man.  The season would be moved first..  Illinois didnt move their season because they like April showers.  They need that state tourney cash.

We've both been around since the ball was square....you know the IHSAA isnt going to let 50 or 60% of schools play in the fall if 100% could play in the spring.

The IHSAA wont have a state tournament without Marion County/

Remember how much income they has lost this year (no basketball tourney).

    Its a cash money thing.

Cannot fathom a situation where Immediate family would not be allowed into games.

Exactly....In the fall or the spring, you'd have to allow parents.

If we dont feel we can allow mom and dad to sit and watch, the players lose out.

Do you really think the MIC would say no to Cathedral?

The Big-10 would say no to Cathedral, DT.

I've heard that the IHSAA does have a backup plan.  They call it the HYBRID schedule.  Winter sports would play from January to end of February.  Fall sports would play from March to end of April.  Spring sports would play from May to end of June.  Not sure about required number of practices before first game. That may still need to be determined.

    That would work, SF.

Is it one year?  Are you sure about that?  Positive?

The goal posts keep moving on who we are protecting most and what the entire goal of this thing is.  A vaccine guarantees nothing even if it is produced in gross quantities.  The fear porn has been spread so widely that many folks will never mentally recover and keep their kids in a bubble because they don’t know who to trust.

If its bad next year, we postpone again.  But we have time to work on answers.  150,000 have died.

We cant play now.   Its a life and death situation that, to me, isnt worth the risk.

Worth the grind that @psaboy referenced. You will lose some younger kids to physical and mental burnout. I know there is a strong contingent on here who thinks a spring football season would be fine, and it may be for some kids and programs, especially current Seniors, obviously, and bigger programs. But for underclassmen and especially smaller programs a spring season is just not that simple.

Even with two shortened seasons, there's still a number of ancillary issues to sort through. Each season would need at least two weeks of practice before competition begins, how do football coaches handle the Spring Break crowd (which having coached in both the fall and spring seasons incandescent assure you is TOTALLY different from even your week long fall breaks), how do they handle the new dynamic with winter and spring coaches.

Some consideration also needs to be given to how many student-athletes are not "football first" multiple sport athletes.  If I am a "baseball first" guy who plays football because it is fun and doesn't conflict with baseball season too much, I am likely not playing football in the spring, even if the seasons are separated a la what Illinois is doing. If I sustain a mild injury in the fall, I have the winter months to rehabilitate that injury and be pretty close to full strength by tr he time baseball rolls around in the spring. The Illinois schedule takes that away: now if I sustain even a mild injury it has a big impact on my baseball season. Basketball teams may see this too where they lose guys off their roster who are "football first" and play basketball because it doesn't really effect their traditional football season. Bow prevalent would these issues be? Depends on the size of your school and how many multiple sport athletes you have.

Also, if I am a baseball or track coach in Illinois I am ticked about their schedule.  For some, and I would hope this is a small crowd, selfishly I just lost half of my summer. Next, I think their overall participation rates will be way down. This may not be for lack of interest but simply because most parents take time off from work in June for vacation and that time is often worked into their schedule months or years in advance. Many reserve their spots at vacation spots years in advance and I think this past spring break proved that people are going to vacation even in the middle of a pandemic. Baseball coaches specifically are going to have to contend with travel baseball now more than ever.

Again, I am apparently on somewhat of an island here and I get that which is why I have refrained from posting about it as much. I could be totally wrong; things could go off without a hitch in Illinois, Virginia, and New Mexico. Participation may actually go up, coaches may work in perfect harmony, rainbows, unicorns, etc, but I just don't see it.

I want football, I think it is safe to play now, I do not want our seniors to miss their last season, they have definitely earned it, but not at the expense of the long term health of the game. Fully admit I may be wrong, but there it is.

I took a moratorium from posting, too.  I dont dislike anyone arguing for playing now. I just think this is a life and death situation and delaying the season to spring is a small cost no matter what the circumstances.

Things wont go off without a hitch..there will be dozens of problems.../   But the virus is here and we have no ability to stop it.  Next spring, we probably will. That's what I hope for.
